Hey, I'd like to go surfing tomorrow afternoon (5pm-ish after work in
Orinda)...At what break do you think there will be chest-high waves
good for a progressing beginner, but not more than a 40-minute drive?
I usually surf Linda Mar but wouldn't mind trying other spots. Thanks!

I have been wearing shorts under my wetsuit for years near any parking
lots.my key fits nicely in side pocket---
hope you are all making through the summer
I keep a separate key just for surfing (no keyring). On suits without a key loop/pocket I push the key up my left sleeve on my inner arm up near my elbow. It never comes close to moving, so no worries about losing it, and I don't get the rash that I get if I wear it on a cord around the neck. Might not work for everyone, but it sure saves my neck from at least some of the chafing. Plus it's easier to get in and out of the car if you take a break for water, food, beer, etc.
Shit news about the break-ins. Sorry to hear about that.
Hi all... Sunday I had my wallet, blackberry stolen from car (they watched and saw my friend hid her key, yeah lesson learned) at Balboa, step 5... and today I was driving Great Highway and at Noriaga at 5:30pm and saw a car with bashed in back window, with a dog inside. I stopped and waited till the owner came out of the water, luckily nothing was taken, but the cost of the window, such bullshit, just wanted you all to know. Jenn
Good on Taj!
After a week long lull, the ASP World Tour in Jeffreys Bay, concluded on Sat.
July 21st. In a
single day of competition, Taj Burrow beat out Adrian Buchan, Parko, Fanning and
Slater in
the final to win the event. Waves were 3-4 ft. clean and contestable, though
inconsistent
on the sets. Taj won J-Bay riding his sandwich epoxy FireWire exclusively. He
is the only
surfer on tour not riding a traditional polyester/polyurethane board.
Check out the hightlights here:
http://www.billabongpro.com/
Taj has jumped back to 2nd place in overall points behind Mick Fanning who
remains in
form and remains the man to beat. Fanning has not had a result less than 3rd
place this
year. Taj remains in title contention this year, but will need to finish out
the rest of the
year with excellent results 3rd place and better. Can he do it? Will Taj be
able to put the
kibosh on the rampaging Fanning? Tune into the next World Tour event.
Trestles, CA, Sept. 9th – 15th.

Agreed. Love Patagonia, but a bit of false advertising - I popped in
yesterday and didn't see a single wetsuit in the shop. but i can't
complain.
the ad piqued my interest enough to get me out of a fogged in SF and
down to decent, chest-high waves at Manresa in the sun. it was like
being in socal - I went out in trunks for about 2 hours and the water
felt great!

Patagonia has a wettie made from 80% non-petroleum "Japanese" neoprene lined
with
merino wool. It's said to be warmer for less neoprene so you can go with a
thinner wetsuit
for more flexibility.
Body Glove has come out with the Eco wetsuit made of 100% non-petroleum
neoprene.
I'm not sure who carries Body Glove in our area. Freeline in SC has BG but they
are usually
previous seasons' models.
If anybody out there has tried these suits, it would be awesome to hear a first
hand review.
!!
Outlook for the weekend is more of the same. Maybe a touch bigger this weekend,
then a
tiny bump in size starting Monday.

Hello Is there anyone that surfs in the early morning at OB or Pacifica and want to get together and surf? I need to get going to work by 8:30 so it would have to be an hour of power or maybe two depending how early we surf. I shortboard but if it is really small will bring out a longboard surf. I been surfing for years and I am always willing to help others with there surfing. Not that I am an expert or anything. I want to get in the water more and find it more motivating to have someone to surf with in the morning. I also surf after work, same places. have a great day people servando
i'm down, guys -- live in the Richmond. Not a strong surfer, but have good and bad daze and am obsessed with my new board. Evenings are beautiful too -- we can enjoy this beautiful summer sun!

Southshore O`ahu is expecting to get to 6' today from a 180-195
degree Southern Hemi. This should get to us on Wednesday and hold
for a day or so. Expect maybe waist to chest high at best spots.
Hawaii will get a second pulse on Tuesday and another Thursday. All
of these will be in the 4-6' range. This would translate to 2-4 foot
wave faces.
Surf along south facing shores will be 2 to 4 feet tonight,
increasing to 4 to 6 feet Monday
SUMMARY...Southern and eastern shores trending up on Sunday.
DETAILED...Mid Friday on southern shores has flat to small surf, a
minimum for July. Similar low surf should hold into early Sunday.
Storms favored a broad area south of French Polynesia starting last
weekend. A series of low pressure systems and associated cold fronts
tracked along the western side of this zone from the SW to the NE,
with systems spaced about 2 days apart.
The first system had 30-35 knot winds aimed at Hawaii in the 180-190
degree band for about a day, with a more compact area of 35-45 knot
winds aiming SE of Hawaii this past Saturday into Sunday. The head of
the broad fetch of weaker winds reached to within about 4000 nm of
Hawaii.
Surf from this source should fill in on Sunday, slowly building to
moderate sets late in the day from 180-190 degrees. The episode is
expected to peak Sunday night, with a slow downward trend into
Tuesday from the same direction.
The second system formed last Monday and had a broader, stronger
fetch in roughly to 180-195 degree band on Tuesday. The system
weakened rapidly on Wednesday. It reached about the same distance to
Hawaii.
Surf from this source should override the first episode with long
period forerunners building on Tuesday from 180-195 degrees. This
event should peak early Wednesday with a slow downward trend.
In general, moderate breakers are expected on southern shores from
late Sunday through Wednesday.
Mid Friday on eastern shores has small breakers from 70-100 degrees.
The large scale winds have backed in direction toward the NE. This
wind direction should hold into Saturday as the windswell reaches a
minimum.
A strong high pressure cell is modelled to build north of the state
starting Sunday and holding. It should set up a broad area of 15-22
knot winds upstream from the islands, bringing surf to moderate
levels starting Monday and holding.
Local wind speeds and directions are less certain for Monday to
Wednesday since these parameters can be modified by two elusive
features, local upper level conditions and surface tropical features
to the south of the islands. See the latest NWS state forecast
discussion for details and stay tuned for coastal wind forecast
updates.
Mid Friday on northern shores has above average surf for July with a
low, short-period swell from 320-340 degrees. It was generated by a
weak low pressure system about 1500 nm away from the islands four
days ago. Buoy 51001 shows a downward trend. The surf should return
to flat to tiny conditions over the weekend.
Into the long range, a weak storm is modelled to approach the
dateline on Sunday with low odds of producing surf similar to today
next Thursday into Friday from 320-340 degrees. Typhoon Man-yi is
south of Japan and has begun a recurvature toward the north Pacific.
A short fetch of 40-50 knot winds is forecast to be aimed at Hawaii
adjacent to eastern Japan in the 290-300 degree band over the
weekend. Most models show the system weakening rapidly as it enters
the north Pacific. Thus the primary source will be the swell
generated over this weekend. With the 3000 nm travel distance and
dominant 15-17 second periods, the low swell should arrive locally
next Thursday afternoon. The Kauai swell shadow is from 273-295
degrees, so a significant portion of this episode would be blocked.
Small breakers are possible late next Thursday into Friday.
For eastern shores, windswell should stay moderate or a notch higher
next week with moderate to fresh local trades. Tropical activity in
the eastern north Pacific will be monitored for surf potential. No
specifics can confidently be given presently.
For southern shores, the Wednesday episode should drop to small
levels by Thursday and tiny levels by Friday. Several more systems
are modelled to track along the western edge of a broad area of low
pressure, which is shifting to a position south of eastern French
Polynesia by this weekend. The new track will aim the swell more away
from Hawaii, although angular spreading could keep small surf locally
next weekend. A large ridge of high pressure is modelled SE of New
Zealand next week, leading to below average southerly surf for the
week starting 7/23.
Long range forecasts are subject to radical revisions. The next
collaborative forecast will be issued on Monday, July 16.
This forecast was produced through the collaborative

It's a brief psychological respite from the current flatness out there
and a nice change from the usual testosterone-fueled, lip-bashing (not
that there's anything wrong with that...).
The World Tour rolls on to Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, July 11th-22nd.
Competition is through most of Round 3. Taj, Andy, Mick, Bobby and Kelly have
all advanced
to Round 4. Mick Fanning, in form, remains the man to beat at the South African
right hand
point break. Taj scored a perfect 10.0 for catching 4 mini-tube cover ups on
one wave
through the section known as "Supertubes." Taj will have to better the scores
of Mick and
Andy, if he hopes to keep his title contention alive for this year.
Mick Lowe spotted a Great White cruising the line up in his heat, after which
they invented a
new rule. If you see a Great White, wave your hands in the air, then point to
the water and
paddle in.

We've been having nice favourable wind patterns, but unfortunately no swell to

The south Pacific remains largely peaceful producing no real SW to note and the

tomorrow,
Monday, from the Westerly direction. The outlook for the rest of the week --
Flat. Good
