“Life Is A Wave” 2009 Coming to San Francisco

Save The Waves to honor Fernando Aguerre at Life Is A Wave event on May 14th

San Francisco, CA - Save The Waves Coalition announces its third annual Life Is A Wave benefit event, a yearly celebration of coastal environmentalism through music, art, film, and community activism. Life Is A Wave 2009 will roll in on May 14 from 6pm–midnight, once again at 111 Minna Gallery in downtown San Francisco. The multimedia event will feature live music from several innovative new bands, including Bay Area heavyweights Bayonics, as well as the fast-rising Kapakahi – both known for their dynamic mix of world beats and highly energetic live shows. Opening will be Clif Bar Inc.’s own Dung Beetles, along with DJs M3, OmarEtch, and DJ Paul.

This year Save The Waves will honor Reef founder, International Surfing Association President and philanthropist Fernando Aguerre as recipient of the 2009 Wave Saver Award, for his work and support defending coastlines around the world.

Sponsors of Life Is A Wave 2009 include Clif Bar, Jim Beam, Joie de Vivre Hotels, New Belgium Brewing, Ocean Vodka, Patagonia, Quiksilver Foundation, Zola Acaí, Mavericks Surf Ventures, Surfline, and 1% For The Planet. Additional sponsors will be announced closer to the event date.

About Fernando Aguerre: Fernando Aguerre was born and raised in the coastal city of Mar del Plata, Argentina. After completing law school in Argentina, he moved to the U.S. and with his brother co-founded Reef, a successful sandal and surfwear company, which they sold in 2005.  He has created or been involved with dozens of charitable and surfing-related organizations, including the International Surfing Association, where he currently serves as president, Surfrider Argentina (co-founder), SurfAid International (Chairman Advisory Board), Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (co-founder, SIMA Humanitarian Fund Vice President, Liquid Nation Ball Chairman), and numerous others. Fernando continues to donate his time and other resources to the many organizations in which he participates, as member, advisor or board member, always as an unpaid volunteer, in search of his dream of a better world. He continues to surf daily near his home in La Jolla, California.
