Re: [non-traditional_stickfighting] Simplicity vs. The Complex

This will explain part of my method

Overcoming Fear in a Self-Defense Situation by Sensei J. Richard Kirkham B.Sc.

http://kirkhamsebooks.com/MartialArts/MartialArtsArticles/OverComingFearInSelfDefense.html

By refining reactions I mean starting with a gross movement of say a block and changing the motions slightly each time until an effective block against a facially serious looking hard but controlled, just in case, attack is achieved repeatedly

I've got an article on that as well somewhere, but you get the idea. It's a more holistic method of teaching starting with what the student already does and refining the movements

As I'm sure you discovered yourself practicing self-defense techniques under mental stress is much more important than learning the techniques themselves

Rick

So!  C'mon!  Share!  Does refined reactions mean limiting reactions to a select few to choose from?  Desensitisation?  Physical or thought process?

I developed the WalkSafe system in 1987 after writing down every juijitsu and arnis and boxing technique I knew and wondering which one (of the 2-300) I would choose to use if attacked this way or that.  I cut it down to ten tools to ten target areas and right now I'm shortening it to five and five.  The challenge is to instill the confidence these few will be all the student needs vis a vis the years of training to be a martial artist.  Cheers, Perry

I am going to prove the point about a willing student and one month will produce a
competant stick fighter. In case you didn't know Perry, I have done many little
experiments like this over the last few years. I like to share them on sites like these.
I should point out that it this philosophy is not really proveable in a scientific sense.
And for sure there will be the weekend warriors out there pooh pooh'ing everything
to make themselves look like they are in the know. But they are fairly easy to spot and
not worth worrying about.
I see this going as such:
* Get a willing student and throw them in the ring with a seasoned pro and mark the
score.

* Train them for 30 days and repeat.

The new guy might not win but I bet the score is close.

The question is , do we only give the guy one coach or let him learn from a few
different people. On one hand, one coach will allow more focused time but there is
something to be said for a variety of ideas from various sources.

I think I will see who steps up and get him in the ring and see who might be a good
match for him. We have a few coaches that would do a great job, but matching his
natural style to a coach of his style will more than likely produce great results.
