As many of you know, classes are now meeting at the covered Pavilion
closer to the Zoo entrance of RiverviewPark (The Fly).
After you cross the first set of railroad tracks, the rectangular pavilion will
be on your right. It’s on the Mississippi
River side of the park before you get to the soccer fields and playground.
We changed the location from the Labyrinth for a few reasons
(A) it’s covered in the event that it rains (B) there’s a light so
we can train later as the time changes (C) It doesn’t interfere with
persons who want to walk the Labyrinth meditation circle.
Thanks for you patience as we continue our search for an
indoor space for classes. We’ll bring repellent to the next class
for the mosquito issue.
Tomorrow’s session will be held at our place
tentatively at 3:30pm at our place (1922 General Taylor) instead of at the Labyrinth at 9.
Please call 678-643-3500 or 770-356-0105 to confirm.
On Monday
September 25, Professor Carlao will be turning 40 (believe it or not, capoeira
keep you looking young). We’ll all be sure to play him on Monday’s
roda for his birthday, but in the meantime…
Let’s Party! Bring your friends. All are
welcome (even if you haven’t been able to make it to one of Professor Carlao’s
classes yet)!
What: A Surprise Birthday Celebration of Professor Carlao’s
birthday (his first birthday in the United States).
It’s a Potluck party with a little Brazilian flavor!
Who: All capoeiristas, friends of capoeiristas, and persons
interested in capoeira
When: Sunday, September 24 at 1pm
Where: Risada, Samurai, and Carlao’s home located at 1922 General Taylor Street
between Dryades and Daneel in Uptown New Orleans
Bring: A side dish. We’re grilling steaks and providing
birthday cake. Please bring your favorite dish or drink: Brazilian or
American. You can bring your dish ready-to-eat or use our
kitchen/grill. Here are some suggestions: rice, beans, drinks,
vegetables, sausage, or chicken for the grill, salad, a pasta dish, and chips.
If you want to share any capoeira music or DVDs, you may bring them as
well.
Your Homework: Learn how to sing “Happy Birthday in
Portuguese:
Parabéns a
você,
Nesta data querida,
Muita felicidade
muitos anos de vida
It’s the same rhythm as the birthday song in English.
The group is mixed. Its open to anyone so
feel free to come out anytime, we won’t hold the Brazilian/Cajun thing
against you : )
On Saturdays as of lately we’ve been
practicing music. We’ve got a few berimbaus, pandeiros, an atabaque,
agogos, etc. We’ll play the instruments and sing and learn some songs. If
there is enough people we may do some jogos. We may also do movements by
request, but we focus mainly on music.
The Saturday session is free so you are
welcome to participate. MWF classes have a fee, $10 for the first week to try
it out.
Hope to see you soon,
Samurai

In the
event that it's raining when a class is scheduled, capoeira classes will take
place at the covered pavilion located near the boat deck at The Fly behind
Audubon Zoo. If you are entering the Fly from Magazine Street,
cross over the railroad tracks and the pavilion will be on
your right. It's just before you come to the soccer field and
playground. The floor is concrete so you may want to wear some flexible
sneakers.
Hiro,
I ran into someone at the Rielly center who was interested in doing stuff with
your group.
I told him I would pass his email on to you.
Its dburdett@...

This is a very exciting and monumental time for all persons
in and around New Orleans
who are interested in capoeira, Afro-Brazilian culture, the Portuguese
language, physical fitness, and Brazilian music. For those who
attended Wednesday night’s capoeira session, we hope you enjoyed the
class. We, along with many of you, are delighted to have Instructor
Carlao in New Orleans.
Carlao is a professional capoeirista with over 30 years of
experience. Born and raised in Brasilia, he has trained
regional, Angola,
and benguela under the guidance of Mestre Ralil with Raizes do Brasil (Roots of
Brazil) since he was seven years old. In addition to his capoeira skills
and knowledge, he has extensively practiced other martial arts including Tae
Kwon Do, Jiu Jitsu, and vale tudo(no holds barred fighting).
Instructor Carlao arrived in New Orleans
this week, leaving his family, job, and life in Brazil
behind for the sole purpose of spreading the art of capoeira to New Orleans.
Just as times are tough in Brazil
with the current president and economic situation, we understand that life in
post-Katrina New Orleans
is also not easy so we are implementing some small fees to help Carlao make
ends meet and get the group started. Prices, effective September 8th,
2006, will be as follows:
Introductory student rate (for new students)- One Week
unlimited classes- $10
Monthly Unlimited Classes- $60
Drop-in fee- $10
In comparison with other schools of capoeira and the quality
of Carlao’s teaching, this is an excellent deal. Academies in New York charge $200-250
per month.
We are in the progress of obtaining a rental space, but
until then, classes will be held at the Labyrinth behind the Fly (at Audubon
Zoo). If you need directions, please let me know.
Until further notice, the class schedule is as follows:
Monday 6-8pm
Wednesday 6-8pm
Friday 6-8pm
You will be encouraged to wear white to every class.
After your first week, a uniform is required for class. A capoeira
uniform consists of white capoeira pants (abadas), a white Raizes do Brasil
t-shirt, and a cord. Abadas and t-shirts will be available for purchase
in the next few classes and thereafter by request or on certain days. Cords are
on the way. The clothes are designed for the art of capoeira so they are
flexible and durable. The uniform is white because when capoeira was
played in the past, players would be wearing white suits and whoever left from
the capoeira game with the cleanest clothing would be considered a great
capoeirista. We keep the tradition alive by wearing a white uniform to
class, as do many other capoeira groups today. Prices are as follows:
Abadas $40, t-shirts $20.
Any assistance that you can provide to help us get the group
started will be greatly appreciated. We particularly need assistance with
the following: creation of flyers, distributing flyers, contacting members of
the community regarding possible rental spaces, spreading the word about our
current classes, and website development.
Samurai will continue the Saturday morning session at 9am at
the Labyrinth (until further notice). This session will focus mostly on
music.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at
770-356-0105. Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to
seeing you soon.
We’re meeting at the Labyrinth at 6PM (it gets dark
around 730 so I’m pushing the time up a little more). We have
Instructor Carlao all the way from BrasiliaBrazil. He
has been playing capoeira for longer than I’ve been alive! Don’t
miss this opportunity! Bring your friends too so they can see this too!
This is open to everyone. I can’t stress enough what a great
opportunity this is, and I’m very excited to have you guys meet Carlao. See
you guys at the Labyrinth. Just take Tchioupitoulas west until it ends
into East Drive,
and on the left side is the Labyrinth. http://maps.google.com/maps?oi=map&q=East+Drive+Laurel+Street,+New+Orleans,+LA

Yep, it’s the weekend again, and that means capoeira
at 9am at the Labyrinth on Saturday. The Labyrinth, if you recall, is at the
intersection of East Dr. and
Laurel St.
You can mapquest it, and if you still can’t find it, call me and I’ll
try to direct you.
Open practice at the Labrynth, Wednesday at 630pm until
dark. Everyone’s invited. See yall out there,
Samurai
678-643-3500
PS. I gave bad directions again on the last email!
Laurel is
one way going the wrong way at State
St. if you come down Calhoun St, you can turn onto Laurel. Another way
to go is to take Tchiapitoulas until it runs into East Dr. Theres that funky fork at
the end so just go right there, and the Labyrinth is to your left, look for the
white sign that says Labyrinth.
We’re meeting Saturday at 9am as usual, and this time I’ve
got directions to the Labyrinth for real. Its really easy, just take Laurel St until it
ends into East Dr,
which runs just east of the Zoo. Here is a map
East Dr as I found
out is one way so you can’t come down it from Magazine like I thought.
The forecast is for some thunderstorms, so if its raining,
we’ll meet at my house and play music and watch videos unless someone has
a big enough indoor space to practice. Call me in the morning IF its
raining, otherwise we’ll be at the Labyrinth.
I’m going to start practicing on a regular basis on
Wednesday afternoons, while I’m in the city, around 630pm at the
Labyrinth(where we were last Saturday). It’ll be very informal, I’ll
bring my stereo and a berimbau. If anyone wants to join me, I’ll be out
there and be more than happy to attempt to teach you some movements or learn
some movements from you.
The space that we used last Saturday(the Labyrinth) was
really awesome so we’ll continue to meet there on Saturday mornings as
well as on Wednesday afternoons.
Directions: I’m pretty sure you can get there this
way, but I’ll confirm after today. Head towards the river on East Dr, which is
just to the east of the zoo on Magazine st. Just go down until the road turns
one way(don’t go any further because it’ll be the wrong way) and on
the right is the Labyrinth. Or you can come through the fly by going all the
way through the park, crossing over the railroad tracks the second time, and
after about a quarter mile it’ll be on the left side.
I’m back in town, and looking forward to
tomorrow’s session! We’re meeting at 9am at the meditation
center behind the fly. Go to the back right corner of the zoo to get to
the fly, drive through it, and go across the railroad tracks(you’ll also
cross it once on the way in). We’re in the area to the left once
you cross over. Give me a call if you need further directions, otherwise
just listen for the berimbau. See y’all out there at 9am.
From Aug. 12th forward, classes will be held in The Fly behind Audubon
Zoo. Meet at the pavilion entitled a "Stage for Viewing"
near the soccer fields beside the playground. The pavilion is a great concrete
space providing a nice breeze from the river, trees nearby for shade when
needed, a nice grass area for practicing acrobatics, and ample parking. Call me
at 770-356-0105 if you have difficulty finding us on Saturday. We hope to see
you there.
Capoeira Angola Palmares of Mississippi will be hosting Mestre Gulliver, Master and Internationally recognized performance artist of Capoeira Angola Palmares in New York, during a 3-day workshop starting August 25th through August 27th.
Any and all practitioners of Martial Arts are invited!
Guest visitors from out-of-state will include Instructor Bamboo of the Nashville, TN Capoeira Angola Palmares and special guest from New Orleans, Curtis Pierre's Group of Capoeira Angola.
There will be no class on Saturday Aug. 5, 2006, however, we
encourage you to meet each other in the park at the usual time and
practice the movements you learned in yesterday's class at the park.
Samurai and I will be training capoeira in New York next weekend.
I'll see you on the following Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006 at 9am.
From Aug. 12th forward, classes will be held in The Fly behind

I look forward to seeing you all there on next Saturday at 9am.

Sorry, forgot to send a reminder yesterday about today’s
session. We’re meeting at Audubon at 9am as usual, and we’ll be
there til 11. Afterwards, we might meet back at my house and eat some lunch
and watch some capoeira videos and play some music. See you out there!
Just wanted to say I appreciate the constant invitations and reminders, please keep sending them to me. Unfortunately summer school has been very hectic so I have not been able to attend, however classes end shortly so I'll see you there.
Axe! Are you all ready for tomorrow morning’s practice session? Two
weeks ago we tried the fly, but I think Audubon works better, so we will meet
at the usual location near the fountain by St. Charles at 9am. Remember, wear some
pants that are easy to move around in and bring something to drink, and come with
lots of energy!
Due to the 4th of July Holiday, we will not be meeting in the park this Saturday July 1st to train capoeira. Samurai and I will be in Atlanta. We hope you all have a nice 4th of July weekend.
Hey,
Hope this email finds you before 9am, and I apologize if there is any
redundancy in emails. Capoeira will be at the fly tomorrow at 9am
Saturday instead of at Audubon Park. We'll try a little change of
scenery to see how things go. Apparently Audubon public pool is open
so if anyone is interested in going, bring your swimsuit.
For those of you who don't know where the fly is, it's the park behind
the zoo. Go in to the zoo parking lot from Magazine St and go to the
back right corner of the parking lot where the entrance to the park is
located. You'll go across some railroad tracks, follow the road, and
we'll be in the field to the left, in the shade of a tree.
See y'all out there!

The Saturday morning session this week will be at that park behind the
zoo, the area some call "the fly," I think. Go into the Zoo parking
lot from Magazine, and the entrance to the park is on the south
western end. You'll cross over some railroad tracks, go up a hill and
around a curve. The river will be on your right, and fields on the
left. There is a large tree about a tenth of a mile in, and we'll be
in the shade of that tree. We'll start at 9am. See yall there!

Correction: Session with Prof. Cocada is Saturday
June 10th not June 9th.
We will also have capoeiristas Rosa and
Godzilla from Grupo Maculele visiting the class as well.
We hope to see you all there. Please
spread the word.
