I'm doing ok, a few stiches around my eye, some good scabs on my face, my mouth got torn up pretty well, as well as some general bumps and bruises scattered about - glad I had a full suit on, and wish I'd had a helmet....
It was pretty windy when we got to the lake, and I couldn't wait to get on the water. There were a couple of other kiters launching from up by the windtalker, but I was awfully confident from my month in Aruba, and thought I would just launch in the straight onshore wind where the windsurfers were hanging. I rig and launch, it's too windy & slippery to walk the kite upwind out into the water by myself, so one of the other kiters helps me walk out. We're out a little ways, but not as far as I would of liked, a big gust hits and I lose my footing, and the other guy loses his grip on my harness too. I'm getting dragged back at the shore, and should have let go of the kite at that point, instead, I put my board on my feet and try to sail out of there, almost instantly I get ripped off my edge, and build up a lot of speed, headed toward shore, I bring my kite up to get rid of some of the power and am lofted instantly. I start flying over the
mud and rocks on the shore, and there is no indication of coming down soon, so I let go of the kite from about 6' up and come down going about 20 or 30, it was a hard landing, and really brought home those safety lessons we're always hearing....
glad it wasn't worse,
Peter

From: mail.larsonsport.com [mailto:mail@...] Sent: Monday, September 19, 2005 4:14 PM Subject: Larson's News! Toucan! Closeouts! New Stuff!
Thanks for coming to the Toucan!!!!!
The 2005 Toucan Open was tons of fun with fabulous weather and great racing! Navman GPS units were available for the first ever Toucan Speed Challenge and they got a workout on Friday. Participants were on everything from 5.8s to 9.0s and the top speed was reached by Barry Ritchey of Albuquerque, New Mexico who reached 29 knots. It’s quite a challenge to try to get more speed out of your gear, but also humbling to find out how slow you are going when you think you are fast! Watch for more speed events in the future – it was too much fun.
Course racing took place on Saturday and Sunday in fairly light winds and we all got reminded that an old style long board is the most competitive and most fun board to be on when racing in light wind. Lee Huels (from Ft. Walton, FL) and Randy Rhodes (who was on his way back to Pensacola, FL after a summer in the gorge) showed everyone the fastest way around the course.
The Saturday night party, raffle and pot luck was all kinds of fun – there were rumors that the light winds of the afternoon had lead to a sacrifice to the wind gods that included opening bottles of tequila, so by the time the food was served there was an unexpected interest in the “adult” watermelon at the pot luck. And all that lead to an unusual interest in dancing by later in the night. Katie Crafts (from Hood River, Or.) was quite the dance instructor and still managed to race the next day and win the sport fleet! Lots of great prizes were raffled off with the big winners being Bill Morris who won a Bic Techno 2, Robert Richardson who won a PowerEx mast, Katie Crafts won an Epic Gear boom bag, Greg Anderson won a set of Da Kine luggage and someone won a boom. We can’t remember who – that’s just how good the party was!
Start making your plans now for next year – The Toucan is always the weekend after Labor Day and is always more fun than we should be allowed to have in Nebraska.
Surf Expo Report
The windsurf industry trade show took place in Orlando last weekend and we got to see all the latest and greatest advances in windsurfing gear. Board shapes and sizes are not much different than they have been the last few years and sails designs are just being slightly refined.
Exocet and Starboard both have hybrid boards in production, which are essentially recreational versions of the designs that each company had submitted for consideration as the next Olympic class board. As most of you have heard, the Neil Pryde RS:X was the board chosen as the new Olympic class board and is somewhat of a combination of a formula board and a long board. This combination, or hybrid, of long boards and formula boards is designed to be fun to sail and able to be raced in winds from 5 to 30. The Exocet Pacer and the Starboard Hybrid Carve are both designed to be fun to sail in light winds, with the gliding through the water feel of old style boards and to pop onto a plane early and be respectably fast. Both designs look great and we are eagerly awaiting reports from our friends in Florida who will be sailing on them soon.
The biggest news from surf expo is the prices of windsurfing gear – it’s all getting more expensive!!! The weakness of the dollar against the euro (and who knows what other factors) has contributed to boards and sails costing more. The good news is that the designs haven’t changed much – so if you have been thinking about buying new gear – do it now! Larson’s still has good stock of boards and sails and the manufacturers still have some ’05 gear available. If you wait until next summer for ’06 models you will be paying the ’06 prices! Check out our closeout list below for the best deals and let us know if you have something you are looking for so we can help you find the best deal. Toucan Report
One of my favorite things about the Toucan is the simple lifestyle
for three days. If you sail barefoot, then you don't even need no
stinkin' shoes for three days. OK, I exaggerate; I did put on my
XC
ski boots for a ski both Sat and Sun morning. The kick `n'
glide was
better than I thought it would be, but it was best in the cool
morning air.
Ironically, the sand at Lake McConoughy is better than the sand at
the ocean beach. Miles and miles of pure white sand with a beach at
least a hundreds yards deep. Compared to last year, the water was up
something like seven feet. This made the main body of water about 15
miles long and over two miles across. Gary and I went cruising
around on Friday, wearing nothing more than shorts and lycra tops.
My GPS reported almost a 2-1/4 mile reach across the lake and we
went sailed down to the dam, over five miles east of the launch.
Although we weren't course racing until Sat, there was a speed
check sponsored by NavMan [you'll be seeing ads in the
windsurfing
rags for their products]. As the wind improved Fri afternoon, Gary
and I became more and more addicted to bettering our fastest speed.
I had a 27-kt run on my first pull of the trigger and sailed around
determined to better my speed. After working my way upwind and
waiting impatiently for a big gust, I finally recorded a speed of 29
knots, which held as the fastest speed over the entire regatta.
There's a joke that Lake McConoughy means `place where it
always
blows at night.' In the seven or so years I've attended the
Toucan,
I've always planed at least one night, even though there are
years
when I didn't plane at all during the day. It was tough last
year,
with no moon, but this year we had a waxing first-quarter moon.
After sailing almost the entire afternoon of Friday up until
sundown, I opted to skip the evening session and enjoy the lovely
sunset, dinner, and head off to sleep relatively early. Of course it
blew all night and dusted the inside of my tent with copious amounts
of sand.
After my morning tea and a quick sand ski, I got a chance to try
Karen Marriot's brand stinkin' new Olympic rig [it birthed
from the
bubble pack the day before], the RS-X with the women's 8.5 sail.
After flailing around for a few minutes, it's been a while since
I
have sailed a high performance board with a centerboard, I had a
very enjoyable morning session. Although the board is relatively
heavy, at least compared to a formula board, once on the water the
board is fairly responsive with the centerboard kicked up.
I'll refrain from boring you with the racing results for Sat
and
Sun, but in nutshell: we schlogged, we pumped, and planed a wee bit.
And of course, true of most regattas, the wind was stronger
[planable] both days before and after the races. Thankfully, the
wind did stay down during our Sat on the beach pot-luck, awards
banquet and bonfire.
After nursing my wound of not winning the first place door prize,
a new board, the wind picked up enough to keep my tradition alive. I
attached a glow stick to my sail and a flashing light to my harness
before launching. The light, from a beautiful setting moon, was
pretty good when reaching out. However, about half my reaches back
to the beach were spoiled by someone trying to `help' me by
aiming a
zillion candlepower light in my direction. Nothing like having to
figure out which campfire I launched from, of the dozen or so
campfires up and down the beach, by having to squint with one eye
[from the spotlight] and not run aground.
Any of you remember Kim Kent? She was there with her husband,
Brian, 10-month-old daughter, Tallis, and pack of dogs. In a future
issue of WindSurf magazine, there will be an article on the Toucan
–
Glen Dubock, you're seen his photos in the windsurf and surfing
rags, was there firing away with his camera for three days. Pretty
cool that a windsurfing mag would even consider sending Glen to a
regatta in Nowhere Nebraska. And Nick, have you ever heard of
carpooling? We could have easily fit you in Gary's rig.
Put the Toucan on your calendar for next year – it's always
the
weekend AFTER Labor Day.

Barry, I felt I had lucked out. Still suffering from arthritic knee from all the "off ad lip" jumps. On my way back I pasted about 6 vans/suv heading down and solo is there all Sept. Hope to hear about the epic event. If knee gets better will be up for a bike ride. Think you had mentioned Boundary.G
Glen Dubock, friend of Clay's [Feeter] and a photographer who's photographs we've all seen hundreds of times in the windsurf rags, was at the Toucan doing a photo shoot. While he was there, he was trying to coordinate [over his cell phone] this week's trip down to Punta San Carlos. Matt Pritchard [and maybe bro Kevin] and a bunch of others [Peter Trow, etc.] were driving down for some epic swell prediction event to happen about this Thursday. According to Glen, this week's swell and wind coincidence was predicted to be so good that he changed plans to go there and photograph it. Sounds like PSC is having one awesome late summer. But then nothing can compete with the Coach when it's going off... ;^)

Returned from 9 days at San Carlos. Was an different late summer with big winds 7 of 9 days and good swell 5 of 9 days. Was on the 4.2 all but 2 days. The water was the warmest I have seen with a lot of the kiters in shorties and several in swim suits. Awe to be young with warm blood. The second week Chris Wyman was having his bachelor party through Solo Sports with a good group of kiters. The kiters kicked butt and turned out to work out well sharing the waves with us old school windsurfers. Actually most kiters had to windsurf during the mid afternoon since the wind was so strong. Hope the usual suspects have been keeping the sacred waters of the Coche warmed up. G

Lars, Congrats. on the "top of the mountain" race. We could do the KOM next week . We would need to start by 4:30 or 5 latest. There are several different options depending on time. keep an eye on the wind . A cold front is expected to come down the east side giving east wind sometime midweek. Rest up. G

I did it Monday. Went up KoM and down Eagle whatever. Very nice! Definitely one of my favorite trails in the area.
I am going to pass on tomorrow. I was in the "Top of the World Mountain Bike Race" in Red River today. It was pretty grueling and I am wiped.
Let do it an other time. I already have plans for next weekend. How about a weekday, like this Thursday? What is the latest possible start time, without running out of day light? 4:30, 5:00?
How was Baja?

Partly cloudy with isolated showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Highs in the 70s to lower 80s...except in the 60s to lower 70s over the higher elevations. West winds 10 to 15 mph shifting to the southwest 10 to 20 mph in the afternoon.
From the zillion responses I got from you and others, I'd say the only thing
incorrect about this is the gloom and doom date. The web site and phone
number are legit and can be utilized if you want to keep your phone
number(s) off the call list. It prompted me to register our cell phones,
even though we had listed our home phone over a year ago...
Now, about that formula gear urban legend... ;^)

Cell Phone Numbers Are Being Handed Over to Telemarketers And You've Got a Short Time to Keep Your Cell Phone Number Out of Their Hands -Mostly Fiction!
Summary of the eRumor The eRumor warns that cell phone numbers will soon be published in the same way as the numbers for wired phones and that you should sign up with a new government cell phone "do not call" registry to prevent solicitor calls from coming to your mobile phone. Some versions say the cell phone numbers are being handed over to telemarketers by a certain date, such as January 1, 2005. Some versions say there is a deadline for listing your cell phone on a "do not call list" such as December, 2004.
The Truth The U.S. government has established a "do not call" registry where you can list phone numbers you want blocked from unsolicited calls such as from telemarketers. That registry is for both wired and mobile phones and there is no deadline by which a phone number needs to be listed in order to be protected from telemarketing calls. There is not a separate cell phone registry. The registry is at: www.donotcall.gov.
At this writing (12/3/04) there is discussion among mobile providers about setting up a mobile phone directory listing mobile phone numbers. According to the Cellular Telephone and Internet Association (CTIA), a cell phone directory is proposed that would be available through calling directory assistance only, not published in writing or on the Internet. So far, there is not a set date when that will be done and the CTIA says the numbers are not going to be "handed over" to telemarketers. Users would have the option of not having their numbers listed in the directory.
Some telemarketers call some phone numbers regardless of whether they are listed in directories because they use devices that dial numbers in sequence looking for working numbers although at present, they are prohibited by law from including cell numbers.
Updated 12/03/04
A real example of the eRumor as it has appeared on the Internet:
Version #1
Starting Jan 1, 2005, all cell phone numbers will be made public to telemarketing firms. So this means as of Jan 1, your cell phone may start ringing off the hook with telemarketers, but unlike your home phone, most of you pay for your incoming calls. These telemarketers will eat up your free minutes and end up costing you money in the long run.
According to the National Do Not Call List, you have until Dec. 15th 2004 to get on the national "Do not call list" for cell phones. They said that you need to call 1-888-382-1222 from the cell phone that you wish to have put on the "do not call list" to be put on the list. They also said you can do it online at www.donotcall.gov http://www.donotcall.gov/
Registering only takes a minute, is in effect for 5 years and will possibly save you money (definitely frustration)! Make sure you register now!
Version #2
FYI: A directory of cell phone numbers will soon be published which all consumers may access. This will open the doors for solicitors to call you on your cell phones, using your precious minutes. The Federal Trade Commission has set up a "do not call" list. It is called a cell phone registry. To be included on the "do not call" list, you must call
1-888-382-1222 from the number you wish to register......or you can go to their website athttp://www.donotcall.gov to sign up (under the heading "Register A Phone Number").
This an urban legend! See
urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_cell_phone_directory.htm. The 888
number is, however, safe to called. It ie the same number you call for
your land line.
