Hey everyone, name is Paul and I have recently joined the group, having decided
to include a decent amount of mountain biking into my workout regime. I live in
Freehold and bike locally, but am looking to get into some more trails in the
state with other more experienced riders. I have decent equip (TREK 4500), good
enough for moderate trails. Let me know if anyone is up for some weekend rides,
thanks

Paul

Heartshorne woods! It's relatively close to Ft Monmouth, located in Atlantic
Highlands I believe. It's real easy to find, and has MILES of trails, including
fun singletrack, and fireroads. All legal park trails. You can shoot me an
email if you need more details, not to the yahoo address, instead use
themick75@....

If you have any photos of you or your friends (local riding only) I
could use them for the home page of the message board. Right now I'm
just pulling pics from Google but I'd rather have shots of members.

Action shots
Landscape format (horizontal)
Your local riding area (Jersey)

Send them to me and you'll see yourself on the message board home

The patriots path was good today. There's been some XC ski use so
it's making the trails a little easier to ride so go check em out if
you get a chance. Lewis Morris was good as well although the snow was
getting a little wet making climbs tough. All in all though a great
day.

I'll be heading out in a few minutes for a 4 hour training ride.
It'll be a mix of road and crunchy stuff over towards morristown on
the patriots path. I'll be suited up as written.

Myself I'm a bit of a bike junkie. My quiver has more than a few in it:

MTB
2008 Fisher Superfly
2008 Trek 9.9 Elite SSL
1992 Fisher Montare Rigid Single Speed Conversion
2007 Fisher Rig Single Speed

Road
2006 Lemond Versaille(In pieces since hit by car)
1999 Lemond Versaille(Being built up since other one was wrecked)
2005? Motobecane Messenger Fixed Gear

The weapon of choice today is the rigid SS. Perfect for these nasty
conditions.

I agree. I prefer to bike in the winter more than the summer. And I do
have a tough time monitoring the conditions... Because I bike commute
to work I never know what the conditions will be out there as well -
overnight weather can really fool you in the morning!

My wardrobe
Very thin base layer
Long sleeve Jersey
Fleece overshirt
wind jacket
thermal pants
wind pants
two pair socks
hiking boots (yep, and sandals in the summer!)
balaclava
crappy gloves

It's pretty much the same if I'm mountain biking although I usually
leave out the fleece overshirt and the wind pants and I trade in the
hiking boots for real bike boots (Lake).

Bikes
Mountain: Trek 6700, yr. 2002-ish
Hybrid: Trek 7500FX, yr. 2004 (my second one. the first was stolen-the
rats)
Road: Specialized Allez Vita, yr. 2003 (dust collector)

I'm finally done buying bikes having bought and sold a few others.
However, if I ever win the lottery I will buy a Santa Cruz Juliana. I
test road one once and thought I'd died and gone to heaven. I still
remember it and I doubt I'll ever forget it.

I can understand some of these last bitter days not wanting to
venture outdoors, but for the most part the winter can be some of
the best rides of the season. You don't necessarily need studded
tires although they help. The hardest part is to monitor the
conditions. If the snow is packed - go for it. If there's a couple
inches of fluffy stuff - go for it. If it's slushy snow or there's
more than 3" it's going to be rough. When in doubt hit the road and
get some miles in. I'll ride all winter long and I'll be out even
in these conditions. Just find a system of layering clothing so
that you'll stay warm.

Here's what I wear for winter rides:

sleeveless base layer
long sleeve jersey
wind jacket
bib shorts with leg warmers
thermal tights
shoe covers
lobster gloves
thin ski hat

If it gets into the lower teens or single digits I'll throw on an
extra layer of tights and a different jacket but that's it. Oh and
don't underestimate the power of those chemical toe warmers. It's
all good!!!

You're welcome. Looking forward to spring as well. I bicycle commute to work -
dressed this morning with two pair of pants, 3 shirts, 2 pair of socks then let
the dog out and found out how cold it was. I just couldn't face the 28 degrees
of wind at 5:30 in the morning so I said to heck with it, changed and drove to
work! I definately look forward to just some summer riding clothes and a pair
of sport sandals to ride in!!! You guys still have any snow up there in Jersey?

You're welcome.  Looking forward to spring as well.  I bicycle commute to work -
dressed this morning with two pair of pants, 3 shirts, 2 pair of socks then let
the dog out and found out how cold it was.  I just couldn't face the 28 degrees
of wind at 5:30 in the morning so I said to heck with it, changed and drove to
work!  I definately look forward to just some summer riding clothes and a pair
of sport sandals to ride in!!!

You guys still have any snow up there in Jersey?  Any snow riding??

Opening Day for Staten Island Mountain bikin is finally here!
July 12th at 1pm. The SI parks commissioner and Senator Andrew Lanza
will officially open the trails in Wolfe's Pond Park.

After many years of back and forth and having to get the city wide
policy changed and watching Mountain biking open in Queens and in
Manhattan (yes.. Highbridge Park in Manhattan) and knowing we where
surrounded by great stuff in Jersey, Staten Island is
finally getting its do. WIth about 10k of trails now and a goal of
20K by the Spring. There are beginner, intermediate and difficult
level trails to ride. The parks department has also agreed to a dirt
jump park where the current one stands. (This will not be open on
the 12th.)

The day will start at 9am with pre-5k trail run festivites which will
be followed at 10am by one of the toughest 5k runs around in honor of
our Heroes from Ladder 5, Engine 24 and Batt 2 who have perished in
the line of duty. Race awards will be held at approx 12pm and will
be followed at 1pm by the official opening of the trails. There
will be b-b-que and bands along with childrens acitivtes all day.

We can sure use some help from some expierenced riders to guide rides
and give pointers to new comers that may come out. We can also use a
hand putting the fininishing touches on the trails this week in the
evening hours.

If anyone is available and interested in helping out call
Matt LeBow at 646-210-5264

Thank you and hope to see you on the 12th.

I go to the one in Martinsville often, its 5 min from my house. Its good
but it takes like 3 days for it to dry up there so if you dont like mud or
slippery rocks i would give it a couple of days after rain. But its awsome
riding, i am a novice my buddy got me into riding last year and i dont get
a lot of time to go up there so i dont know the trail as well as i would
like to but i have had no problems. If i can do it you can lol

Enjoy

Denise,
I would not consider Round Valley a novice ride. Maybe I've always
taken the hard trails with ridiculous climbs and obstacles galore. Fun
for some, but discouraging to a beginner.

Lewis Morris Park in Morristown is a very nice, relatively large place
to ride. The trails are well marked and maintained. Very well suited
to intermediate rider. It has some moderate climbing but no real
technical obstacles. The website url:
http://parks.morris.nj.us/index.asp

In the Franklin (southern Somerset County) area there is Six Mile Run.
There is a trail network leading to it from Rt 27. Much smaller in
area, not marked, but many loops an connector trails. These trails
will lead all the way to the Raritan Canal. Other than a few bridge
crossings, which you can walk over, this place is also suited to
intermediate riders. Try this url:
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/Franklin_Park_Trail_Riders

In between the two, in Bridgewater/Martinsville area, is Washington
Valley Park, commonly known as Chimney Rock. This place is a LOT of
fun, but has many technical elements, particularly rocks and logs.
There are some less challenging trails, but they are hard to find, as
the place is mostly unmarked.

I don't know what part of the state you're in, but wherever you ride,
try to go with someone who knows the trails. It's always more fun when
you're NOT lost, and a guide can choose trails matched to your
ability, while still challenging and fun. Forums like this and
mtbr.com can help you find rides in your area.

Happy Trails,

Carlos

start out on. Does anyone have any advice on trails such as Round Valley or
Allamuchy? WOuld these be too difficult to start on? Thanks for any help!
