Denise,
I would not consider Round Valley a novice ride. Maybe I've always
taken the hard trails with ridiculous climbs and obstacles galore. Fun
for some, but discouraging to a beginner.
Lewis Morris Park in Morristown is a very nice, relatively large place
to ride. The trails are well marked and maintained. Very well suited
to intermediate rider. It has some moderate climbing but no real
technical obstacles. The website url:

In the Franklin (southern Somerset County) area there is Six Mile Run.
There is a trail network leading to it from Rt 27. Much smaller in
area, not marked, but many loops an connector trails. These trails
will lead all the way to the Raritan Canal. Other than a few bridge
crossings, which you can walk over, this place is also suited to
intermediate riders. Try this url:

In between the two, in Bridgewater/Martinsville area, is Washington
Valley Park, commonly known as Chimney Rock. This place is a LOT of
fun, but has many technical elements, particularly rocks and logs.
There are some less challenging trails, but they are hard to find, as
the place is mostly unmarked.
I don't know what part of the state you're in, but wherever you ride,
try to go with someone who knows the trails. It's always more fun when
you're NOT lost, and a guide can choose trails matched to your
ability, while still challenging and fun. Forums like this and
mtbr.com can help you find rides in your area.
Happy Trails,
Carlos

Round Valley or Allamuchy? WOuld these be too difficult to start on?
Thanks for any help!
