Hi Paul,
where in Monmouth County? YOu have a gem of a ride at Hartshorne
Woods right in your backyard. Not lots of log piles last time I rode,
but you can get lots of mileage by riding the inner and outer loops
and doing the figure-8 up to the Battery (see trail map at
monmouthcountyparks.com). The climbs are pretty good there, and when
its dry, the trails are super fast. For an extra long ride, you can
loop a small part of the road into your ride and connect it with Huber
Woods; Huber is flatter and has lots of sand pits, but the riding is
good for a warm up. I would ride down to Huber first, then do the
inner loop at Hart, then the outer loop at Hart, finishing with the
trail up to the Battery and then descending the diamond trail to the
parking lot.
Take 35 to 36, exit at Navesink River Road and follow around for about
a mile or so, park entrance is on your left (dirt parking lot, look
for the bikes in various states of readiness to ride). This is near
Twin Lights in Atlantic Highlands, if you know the area.
BONUS: I always like to know where to eat after a ride, and if you
cross the 36 bridge into Sea Bright, on your left at Sea Bright public
beach is Ichabod's Tavern - they have great beer on draft and make
killer burgers.
