Kevin,

I can't make it and am truly sorry.  Coach and Newington wrestling have a special place in my heart.  Christy and I have company from out of state staying at our home.  It is a difficult time to take off.  I couldn't give an answer at this point.  I'm sorry!  If I was in town it would be an EASY "YES!"  Coach means a lot to me and I would love to see some old faces and speak some words about coach.
I'm thoroughly impressed with the great things that have taken place in the last year.  With your help and other dedicated wrestlers, so much has been accomplished.  Thank you!  I know Coach is truly touched and is proud of everyone.
Wrestling has shaped my entire life and I owe it to coach to be present at this gathering.  Sometimes some things are out of our control.  I honestly wouldn't know until that week.
I'm not a regular at church and might be some day, however, I do say "hi" to coach every night.  I pray that he hears me and knows that I will forever be thankful and appreciative of what he did for me and the other members of Newington wrestling.  I know you'll be busy come this day, but if you could, say hello to some of the family for me.

Thanks,
Derek

The "Friends of Newington Wrestling" is a loosely-combined group of people associated with the NHS team and the Blackhawks youth team.  They put on a tournament this past Saturday and there are photos from the tournament posted on our website gallery.

This is a link to one of those photos.

http://nwaa.exposuremanager.com/p/fow_golf/dsc0155539

Please note that there are comments posted on this photo.  (Thanks Derek!)

It would be great if we had a lot of the guys going through all the photos and making posts and adding their comments.  The entire NWAA photo gallery is set up for us to do that... so have fun looking through it.

Also... Please remember we are always looking for old photos and any other memorabilia you may have that is associated with the history of wrestling in Newington.

Regards,
Bruce Fairclough

Hi Everyone,

Hi Everyone,

Hope you are all staying cool this summer.  Wanted to give you an update on what the NWAA has been up to.  Please feel free to forward this email to any other NHS wrestlers or family of NHS wrestlers.

Logistics - We have elected officers, registered as a non-profit, and obtained tax ID's.  A special thanks to AJ Kritzman for helping us with the legal nuts and bolts...AJ completes UCONN Law in the Spring .  We are off and running.

Website - The NWAA has a website (www.newingtonwrestlingalumni.org).  It is always being updated, so check back periodically to see what we've been up to.  There are a number of dedications to Rich Hastings.  We will be adding a number of photos of Rich Hastings, wrestlers, parents, and teams.  Feel free to email any scanned photos to me or the NWAA webmaster, Bruce Fairclough.  Special thanks to Bruce Fairclough for his help in creating and maintaining our website...its a lot of work.

Scholarships - The NWAA plans to distribute both academic and wrestling camp scholarships.  # and $ are subject to the funds we have available.  This year we should be able to distribute at least $1000 in total (although we'll need your help to generate these funds).

Remembering Coach Hastings - We have been in contact with the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Perlini, and have received approval to dedicate, in the memory of Coach Hastings, a tree and an engraved stone (we'd like to obtain one from Coach's farm) inside the courtyard at the Newington High School.  Steve Woods is investigating cost.  We are also planning to create a plaque dedicated to Coach Hastings for the High School Awards/Trophy Case outside of the gym.  In addition, our website contains almost 80 dedications to Rich Hastings memory (from the Courant's website and from the BlackHawk's website)...  www.newingtonwrestlingalumni.org/remembering.htm

Shirts - As a fund raiser, we will be selling Polo shirts embroidered with "Newington Wrestling".  Please let me know if you are interested...and I'll save a shirt for you in your size.

Contacts - I have attached a spreadsheet with many of the wrestlers that came through the NHS wrestling program.  If you have additional names or contact information or see any errors, please let me know.  We'd really like to flush out this list, so any help with email addresses would be apreciated.

Stats - I have attached a spreadsheet with the statistics for every varsity wrestler/match and award.  Very exciting to see all of these accomplishments summarized in one document.  If you see any errors or have additional information, please let me know.  Special thanks to Tim Walsh who has been maintaining these stats for the last several years....lots of work.

Alumni Weekend - We haven't chosen a specific match yet, but we will be planning another Alumni Match this season.  I'll keep you posted.

Golf Tournament - The Friends of Newington Wrestling (basically the BlackHawk's "Booster Club") will be running a golf tournament on Saturday, September 23rd at the Stanley golf course.  Entrance fee is $125 per golfer.  Not a good golfer?  Don't worry, its a scramble (aka "best ball") event so that you golf as part of a foursome team and use the team's "best ball" each shot.  Even I like it :)  Let me know if you are interested and I'll sign you up.

2006-2007 Team - The team is going to be pretty good this year.  The 4 individuals that went the furtherest at States are all returning, including Anthony Kaponis.  Anthony is one of the most athletic and exciting wrestlers I've ever seen.  He wrestled at 171 last year and finished 2nd in the LL, 2nd in the Open, and was unable to continue at the New Englands after he was injured...in a match that he won.  Anthony will be a senior this year, and I can't wait to see him wrestle again...some of his matches were the most exciting I've ever seen.  His style reminds me of Joe Mendonca's...but really good (just kidding Joe)  :)

Dues and Donations - Have you paid your dues for 2006?  If not and you are interested in joining, please mail a completed Membership Applicaiton (attached) along with a check for $20 to Kevin Zoeller, 12 Nutmeg Court, Simsbury CT  06070.  Members obtain a NWAA car window sticker (image attached) and help to give back to the Newington Wrestling Team.  If you are already a member and haven't received your car sticker, let me know.  If you are interested in offering your time or expertise to the NWAA, (Membership, Remembrance, Scholarships, or Fund Raising), let me know.

Interested in making a charitable donation for the NWAA Scholarship Fund?  Simply include it with your dues.  Donations to the NWAA Scholarship Fund are tax deductible.

Dues - Make checks payable to...NWAA
Scholarship Fund Donations - Make checks payable to ...NWAA Scholarship Fund

Any questions or comments, or you just want to shoot the breeze, give me a call or send me an email.  Take care.

VERY IMPORTANT... if anyone IS telling people their contributions or dues or ANY
monies to the NWAA are tax-deductible, they need to STOP doing so. We NEVER
said they were, and never told anyone in our group to say that they were.

Again, as I mentioned before, there are lots of local civic
organizations that offer scholarships that do not enjoy "official"
charitable status. It was in that context that I replied to Jason.

When I described to the CPA that we were, in fact similar to a local
team "booster club," he suggested that we avoid the hassles, liability
and most importantly - the expense - of becoming an official charity.
He suggested the filing fees and accounting costs, etc would not be worth it.

The $25,000 threshold I mentioned has to do with a federal form (I don't have
the number, sorry) that has to be filled out if we exceed taking in more than
$25,000. The accountant, did say that triggers some other accounting
necessities as well. (This has nothing to do with the tax-exempt charitable
issue.)

Is the status of being a true "charity" worth it? How many things do you buy on
behalf of a local civic or team group that are tax deductible? Unless it is
advertising for a business, probably none. I would suggest that
tax-deductiblity will have very little effect on most of our fundraising
efforts. Does tax-deductibility make a difference to the person who is buying a
$25 ticket to a fund-raising dinner? Does it make a difference as to whether or
not someone pays their dues? I can't imagine anyone who was interested in our
organization turning down the chance to join because their $20 was not tax
deductible.

A local business already CAN deduct their $50, 75, or $100 for
advertising as a business expense in a wrestling program booklet or
on the website. And to do this we don't need to take on the expense of official
charitable status. A business person can deduct our advertising right now.
(That's why so many similar groups do the "advertising thing" on calendars,
program booklets, etc...) And even in this regard, we should not say ANYTHING
about "tax-deductibility."

The Friends of Football, the Newington Baseball Association, the Friends of
Soccer... these are all groups that exist, thrive, give
scholarships... all without forming complicated business entities and,
more importantly, without the complicated ramifications of
tax-deductible status. We are not a "public" organization. Neither are any of
these other groups. If you could bring us 20 people who each wanted to give
something like $5,000 and would only do so on a tax-deductible basis, then we
MIGHT want consider it at that time. But even then, I would first want to
evaluate the ramifications, the hassle and the expense involved in maintaining
such a status.

For where we are right now, I think our theme should be keeping things
simple. First of all, I don't see us needing to exceed that $25,000
mark in a given year to accomplish even our loftiest goals. So that figure
shouldn't be a concern for now. Secondly, to take on charitable status sounds
like we would be doing a lot of fund-raising just to keep the accountants and
attorneys in business.

I also think that keeping things simple allows the guys to concentrate on
supporting each other as alumni and remembering the memory of Rich, rather than
the "business" of maintaining a formal charity. I think we risk losing a lot of
good-will momentum if we take on too much.

If you feel strongly that this should be done, I think you need to bring to the
table the exact costs and the added duties that would involved the organization
so we could decide whether or not the ends justify the means.

Just my 2 cents.

Bruce

I have spoken with two attorneys, and there has to be some entity.  You can not run a business, collect money, and operate without establishing some type of entity.  Either a sole prop, partnership, corporation, some type of LLC, or a non-profit status.  The only way donations can be deductible legally, is if we are a non-profit.  If not, monies brought in that are not given out in a particular year would be subject to tax.  Bank will open accounts either as personal accounts, or businesses.  If a business, there must be some legal entity.  Your figure of $25,000 may pertain to certain types of state tax filing.  I do not know.  I know of no way to run an public operation without some type of formal, legal entity.  If you are aware of something other, I think the alumni association should see the documentation.  We can not assume things.  We can not allow people to think their donations are deductible because we omit to tell them that their donations will not meet the regs as a charitable donation.

Just curious as to why the tax status is an issue.

We did the research on this earlier through a CPA. He strongly suggested that
we we do NOT attempt to take on any special tax status because it is a very
large expense and a huge hassle to even begin the process.

You will find that most local groups and organizations simply take out a
checking account and run their funds through according to their own private set
of by-laws. We can do this as long as we are not running more that $25,000
through the books during a year.

As far as the school goes, it is not an issue. Most of the other local groups
(grange, the masons, etc.) all do the same thing and offer all sorts of
scholarships.

Jason... If you have any questions on this, call me.

For those of you interested, the scholarship committee is hoping to give
away 3 scholarships next year. The first two will be camp scholarships of
about 300-400 bucks. One being the Richard C. Hastings III Memorial
Scholarship while the other will be the the Newington Wrestling Alumni
Association Scholarship. The booster club gave away the Hastings Scholarhip
this year to get the ball rolling and it is our hope that we can keep it
going. The third award will be an academic award given to a student going on
to college in Rich's name. We are hoping to give away 1,000-1,500 dollars.
The committee has put together a rough criteria and an application process
that is still in the works.
As soon as we are sure of our tax status as an organization I will be going
to see Dr. Swanson at the high school to find out the next step in the
process.

Jason...

What I was suggesting is that at some point, I will come up with some generic wrestling art using existing images I have.  There will not be one or more identifiable people in there.  I would combine this with some of Rich's old mantra's (his 4 key's to success, etc.)  It would not be images of Rich, himself.  I'm thinking this would possibly be our own version of "Successories" motivational posters... only with the wrestling theme.

Any suggestion I had made regarding the use of my website, was refering to my fulfillment/lab service... the part where my existing galleries are set up.  This is one way we could fulfill such artwork / posters, because they already have the shopping cart and photo print fulfillment in place.  It is just one way to do it, and I was offering it as a start up means of getting something like that going without taking on new "infrastructure."  If there is enough of a demand for some offerings I come up with, I can set the NWAA up with its own gallery and fulfillment site, or work out doing something on our existing site with Paypal.  There's alot of "what ifs" in there and variables in there... we don't need to run before we walk. (or crawl, for that matter!...)

As far as permission from the family, we're not using his image, so we're okay in that regard.  As far as using his name with the sayings he had, we could easily cover our tracks with getting a letter of permission.  I will look into sending something out to his estate.  I'll need a contact... (does anyone have the name of the executor of his estate?)

I wouldn't sweat the profits part just yet... If we do start raising some funds from ANY source, we should think in terms of having them come into the NWAA in general, then probably worry about splitting things off to certain "causes" once we start seeing a significant cash flow.

 Dear All,

Since in a way we might be using Bruce’s website for our ends, I have a few questions as to how that would be setup until we had an online payment system in place.

1)      Is this link to his website going to be just like any other business sponsor website or is it going to have special status, because it would provide the group with additional funding?

2)      If he is not going to be a regular sponsor, are we going to set up a separate page for the Hastings Artwork? Rather than in a way seamlessly linking our nonprofit able organization to a profitable business.

3)      Do we have permission from the family to use Rich’s images and mantra?

(A little off topic)

4)   Could we set up a percentage of those profits to go into a fund for Ben and Billy?

This organization is new and fragile, therefore we should be very adamant about “dotting our I’s and crossing our t’s”. I would not want to do anything to inhibit the growth of this organization or Bruce’s business for that matter! Without his consultation and resources we would not be as put together as we are now.

Jason Martin

P.S. Bruce, I would like to pick your brain about websites and online payment in the future for my own personal ends. If you have time after the next meeting perhaps?

Other than covering my expenses, the remaining profits would go to

Also... I already have alot of the legwork done on mugs, t-shirts,

the "wrestling/motivation" theme going on them.

Once we have our banking all squared away and set up, we can set up
Paypal to sell the stuff directly off the NWAA website.

Jon,

I was talking to Jason Martin last night about scholarships and
fundraising for the NHS Wrestling Alumni and he said that I should
shoot you an e-mail.

Back in college I was a captain and treasurer for our school's rugby
team, and one way that we always made a ton of money was through t-
shirt and other merchandise sales to alumni. There's nothing that
ex-athletes love more than stuff with their alma mater and their
sport plastered all over it. Most of the stuff is pretty cheap to
get made (t-shirts, key chains, mugs, etc.) and it can be sold at
matches as well as over the internet.

Anyway, let me know if you like this idea or have any other
thoughts. I'm living out on the west coast, but I'd like to help
out in any way that I can.

Talk to you later,

Ryan Cunningham

To any wrestler who made it to opens - I saw Anthony Kaponis' name in
the paper yesterday (Sunday 2/19) - BEST WISHES FOR A SUCCESSFUL MEET
NEXT WEEKEND. I hope some of you will be able to make it and cheer
Anthony on. If you can't make it, perhaps you can post a message and
someone can get the messages to him or coach Rossi.

Hi, I will be able to man the table on Saturday for the duration if needed.
I cannot make it Wednesday night due to a prior engagement. I will arrive
around 11:30am on Sat to help set up the table. Are we sure that the
cafeteria will be unlocked to grab a table and chair from?

See you soon!

We have two important events for Newington Wrestling coming up this week.

On Wednesday, Feb. 8th, there is the big match at Newington HighSchool.  This is being called "Newington Wrestling - past, presentand future!"  Why?  Because we hope to have MANY alumni there(past)... of course, the regular team will wrestle against Wethersfield(present)... and there will be some exhibition matches with theBlackhawks youth wrestling team  (the future)...

For Wed. night (2/8), the festivities start with the Blackhawks at 5:00 PM.

Also... On Sat. Feb. 11th, at noon is the last home match of theNHS wrestling season. (vs. Simsbury) This is being designated as"Alumni Weekend..." We want to get as many wrestling alumni out to thismatch as possible, because after the match will be the official first organizational meeting of the Newington Wrestling Alumni Association.

IMPORTANT:
We should have an informational table for theNewington Wrestling Alumni Association set up at each of these twomatches.  Someone should man the table before, during, and afterthe matches...  We should have informational hand-outs for anyonewho wants them...  applications... and receipts if someone wantsto pay their $20 to join.

I will take care of the following items:
1) A sign for the table and the wall...
2) Printing informational handouts (flyers)...
3) Printed applications... (by the way, I will have these posted on the web site later today)
4) Receipts booklet... (I already have one to contribute to the cause)

What we will need someone else to step up with is the following:
1) One or more people to man the table on Wed. the 8th...
2) One or more people to man the table on Sat. the 11th...

3) Table and chair to put in the hallway when people come in... (maybe from the cafeteria...?)

Please coordinate with Kevin Z. / Bruce F. (me) and John U. on this...

Looking forward to 2 great events for NHS Wrestling!

Regards,
Bruce F.

Hello everyone.

I hope you have had a chance to look over the web site. We are
looking for your input.

The prospective membership list has been posted here on our Yahoo
Group and is itthere for all the members to look over. We are looking
for as much contact info on these people as possible... If you know
the contact info that is missing, please submit it to the group.
(newington_wrestling@yahoogroups.com)

Also... we are looking for new names to ADD to this list. Do you know
of any other former wrestlers, coaches, or interested parents...? Let
us know who they are!

You will also find the copy of our proposed by-laws under "Files."
Please look them over and make any input you feel appropriate.

Thanks,

Hi All,

If you check out the database, you'll see we have 123 contacts listed,
but we are missing many email addresses, phone numbers, and YOG's.

If you have any of the missing info or know of other wrestlers that
are not listed, please post a message here with the info and we will
incorporate it.

Take care.
