Vintage Enthusiasts,

Just wanted to announce to all of you the newly organized "Friends of
Vintage Base Ball" (FoVBB). Please visit the website

www.friendsofvintagebaseball.org

FoVBB is an organization dedicated to the promotion of the game as it
was played in the 19th century. Our purpose is to facilitate and
preserve the customs, culture, history and spirit of vintage base ball
through public education, awareness and participation.

Currently we are working with the Coalition to Strengthen the
Sheldon/Charter Oak Neighborhood (CSS/CON) and the City of Hartford,
Connecticut to designate a field of play in Colt Park for vintage base
ball. The Coltsville district in Hartford has recently been named a
National Historic Landmark and is on its way to becoming a National Park.

The Hartford Senators, Newtown Sandy Hooks and Hartford Dark Blues are
involved with this project and look forward to using these grounds.

The grounds will be open to all vintage teams. Any of you who would
like to use the field are more than welcome. It will be a great
central location for the New England clubs to meet you don't want to
travel from one corner to the other. The more the field is used the
merrier.

If you would like to schedule a game you can contact me
(capngrit@mac.com) or Ray "Shutta" Shaw (rcshaw1@earthlink.net).

Here's to a vintage 2009!

Hey guys,

A few of us were thinking of trying something new this season, cricket and rounders.  I was thinking of trying to play Saturday April 18th (weather permitting) at Endicott Park in Danvers.  We can try cricket at 12pm and then rounders at 2pm.  Anyone interested in attempting to play?

I dont know if any of you would be interested in attending this event...

Irish Baseball Movie Night Fundraiser

Come join The Essex Base Ball Organization on Saturday January 10th, 7:00pm at
The
Baseball Tavern 1270 Boylston St. Boston, MA for a movie night fundraiser to
help bring
baseball history to Ireland. The Essex Base Ball Club will be showing the movie

I am organizing a vintage ball game as part of Mattapoisett, Mass annual Heritage Days. I am hoping to find a couple of clubs that are available to play the weekend of August 1-2, 2009.

I can supply the balls and bases.

I don't quite have enough for a full club but if anyone wants to play and need extra players to fill out a team I will most likely have a few to fill in the holes.

If anyone can come down that weekend please let me know.

Hey guys,

Sorry if you get this email several times I don’t know who is on what group page…. I just wanted to remind all of you that a few of the captains will be getting together to discuss some vintage base ball and have a few pints on Saturday December 13th.  As usual we will meet at the Boston Bear Works near Fenway, shall we say 1pm?  Here are directions http://www.beerworks.net/html/locations_fenway.html . There should be parking on the street or in the lot next door.

Usually we discuss scheduling, tournaments, etc, but I know a lot of you already have a big chunk of your schedule in place.  I also have a few things I would like to throw out there #1. I am planning a trip to Ireland in July where we would bring 19th century baseball over to the people there.  http://www.baseballireland.com I am still working out the details but we are looking for some more people to go over.  #2. I have been nominated to be a trustee on the national VBBA.  I think they are looking for more involvement from New England so I would like to discuss some things that you guys like/ dislike about the VBBA and how maybe it can be more beneficial to your club.

I look forward to seeing some of you.

Brian

I think we need to be real careful with the expansion of padding on
the catchers mitt. The more padding guys start using on the mitt the
faster the pitching is gonna get and the greater the chance for
injury will get. If we want to use padded mitts why not just make
this a regular mens league. I am all for safety but if the catchers
hand isnt hurting, the pitcher will just keep throwing gas. And it
is just a matter of time before someone gets beaned. And that should
never ever happen in the vintage game.

Hey guys,

I hope everyone has had a good season. I got the email below from
Bruce Leith of the Elkton Club and told him I would pass this along
to all of you guys. I think they would be willing to play overhand
but you would have to check.

Brian

Gentlemen:
Major League Baseball came out with their schedule today and I wanted
to see if any of you were interested in a road trip to see your Sox
in Baltimore or Philadelphia and get some vintage base ball games in
while you're here!

It just so happens that the 3rd Annual Washington DC Classic (AKA The
Hottest Tournament on Earth!) is scheduled for August 1 and 2 in the
heart of Washington DC in the shadows of the Washington Momenument,
the Jefferson Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial. It coensides in
2009 with the National SABR Convention that will take place in DC
from July 31 to August 2. As luck would have it, the Red Sox are
playing the Orioles in Baltimore that weekend if any of you are
interested. Last year's festival was 12 clubs including: Ohio
Village, Greensboro Patriots, NY Mutuals, NY Gothams, Brooklyn
Atlantics, Flemington Neshanock, Talbot Fair Plays, Elkton Eclipse,
Chesapeake Nine of Baltimore, Rochester, and Potomac BBC of
Washington.

Unfortunately, the OBP festival will be the same weekend so there
will be many openings, but several clubs from the Midwest have
already inquired and one from Minnesota is already confirmed. If you
are interested, let us know so we can make sure to pencil you in one
of the spots...and yes, we do have an "in" to be able to purchase
decent seats for the Sox-O's.

In addition, if any club wants to come see Philadelphia's semi-new
park, the Sox are playing there the weekend of June 12-14. We'd love
for you to come to Elkton to play the Eclipse and maybe one of the
new clubs in the area: The Diamondstate BBC of Wilmington, Delaware
or the Havre de Grace Dauntless. Also, the Chesapeake Nine of
Baltimore would love to play you as well if you are interested. We
have a really good "in" there as well and can get you what ever level
of tickets you want. There may even be a couple of freebees floating
around.

If you could pass this email along to any of the clubs in New
England that are Red Sox rooters who may be interested, we sure would
appreciate it. We hope to hear from you soon if you are interested
or have any questions!
Sincerely,
Bruce Leith

Hey guys,

I know this is short notice but is there anyone out there interested in
playing this Sunday in Marblehead, MA. Lynn is playing Melrose and it
looks like Melrose will be very short. The field we will be playing at
is perfect with a wooden grandstand that was built in 1910

We would hate to cancel the game after booking this field. Let me know
if there are any takers.

Brian
