Someone pointed out to me a short film on YouTube of the Bristol Blues v. Essex/Ironsides game in Mattapoisett in August: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9WfolZYpgU

I am not sure who did the film but they called the Blues the Breakers and the game was actually 1861 ball.

I'd love to help you out , but the Pittsfield Elms have shutdown for the season. It sounds like a great venue. We play exclusively 1886 rules, if you are interested in playing us next season.

The Bristol Blues are playing games this Saturday, Septemebr 29th in
Dartmouth, MA. The game is part of a party / open house for a storied
Dartmouth boat yard - food, beer, music etc. is on tap for the day.
Also, there are hiking trails next door and beaches / small coastal
village down the street. In other words, a good place for kids and
loved ones to come out to and enjoy a fine New England fall day.

Our scheduled opponents can not make it due to unforseen
circumstances. Is there anyone out there that might like to jump in?
We are looking for anyone - from a full team to individual players.
Beer and food is on us! Email me at SALMONABODE@COMCAST.NET or reply
here if interested.

Thanks.

'Crank' it up for vintage 'base ball'

By Jan Gottesman
MANAGING EDITOR

CLINTON— Calling all "cranks." All-star "ballists" from all over New England will re-create the game of "base ball" as it was played - and spelled - in the mid-19th Century.
The Wachusett Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring its second annual Vintage Base Ball Exhibition at Fuller Field, 450 High St., on Saturday, Aug. 25.
Last year, ballists, or players, from 12 New England teams put on an all-star exhibition that drew over 500 fans, according to Chamber Executive Director Maegen McCaffrey. The success inspired the chamber to design an even more exciting day.

In addition to the two games - the first beginning at 2 p.m. and featuring the 1861 style of play and the second beginning at 4 p.m. and featuring the 1886 style of play, there are many other activities to appeal to all ages.
Two new teams - the Boston Beaneaters and Maddowe BBC of Springfield - will join returning teams: Cornish Game Hens of Providence, R.I., Dirigo Base Ball Club of Augusta, Maine, Essex Base Ball Club of Danvers, Lynn Live Oaks, Mudville Base Ball Club of Holliston, New Hampshire Granite of Nashua, N.H., Newtown Sandy Hooks of Newton, Conn., Waterbury Connors of Waterbury, Conn., and Westfield Wheelmen.
Cranks, or spectators, can attend beginning at noon. The players will be available to meet and there will be historic base ball exhibits provided by the Clinton Historical Society and the Essex Base Ball Club.
Players
"Originally, we were attracted to Clinton through newspaper articles saying that Clinton had the oldest still in use baseball field - and it dated back to around the period that many vintage teams play," said Brian Sheehy of the Essex Base Ball Club, who is helping the Wachusett Chamber plan the event for the second year in a row. "We are always looking for fun ways to incorporate our games into history and especially baseball history. Clinton is the perfect fit."
Sheehy said last year's event "far exceeded what I expected and I am really excited to see what happens this year. All of the teams that came last year loved it and are really looking forward to it. I think there were 500 fans there and hopefully there will be even more this year.
"I think fans should expect to have fun and see baseball as it progressed through the 19th century. As I like to say, it's a baseball history lesson," Sheehy said.
Some of the changes in rules "cranks" will see are: in the 1861 game, there are no gloves and pitchers throw underhand from 45 feet away; in 1886, fielders wear small gardening like gloves and the pitcher throws overhand from 50 feet away; in 1861, an out could be recorded on one bound.
For more differences, check out Sheehy's Web site, www.essexbaseball.org.
Book signing
Regional authors Rip Pallotta, who wrote "One Day in Mudville: A look at some of the most unique baseball games of all time," Richard Letarte, of Lunenburg, author of "That One Glorious Season: Baseball Players with One Spectacular Year, 1950-1961," and Jack Walsh, of Townsend, who wrote "Baseball's Good Guys: The Real Heroes of the game," will be featured at a book signing booth.
"This outing gives me the opportunity to visit old-time baseball, so old time that the rules are distinctively different from decade to decade," Letarte said.
"It also gives me the chance to, along with two other local authors, talk about baseballĘfrom a period that we knew it best and perhaps sell a few books. These are three distinct yet similar publications. Rip Pallotta's "One DayĘIn Mudville" explores about 25 different baseball games, including his first. Jack Walsh wrote about "Baseball's Good Guys," players who did other things besides run the bases.
"My book, "That One Glorious Season," features all 16 teams from the 1950s era and highlights the performances of 21 players who had the year of years in an otherwise good career," Letarte said.
"People my age love to remember when we were kids and baseball ruled the sports pages," Letarte added.
"Calling me a fan doesn't go far enough," said author Pallotta. "For my entire life I've been a student of baseball. I've come up with some historic games that deserved to be chronicled in a book and never were. This vintage game in Clinton is definitely from 'Mudville' (from the famous poem, 'Casey at the Bat') and it will be my pleasure to be there. It's my hope that I can let people know about my book and what they can get out of it."
Fun Zone
There will also be Fuller Field Fun Zone, featuring carnival games for younger fans.
"Last year, we found that kids, between games, were playing ball in the back and looking for things to do," McCaffrey said. In addition to the children events, which will include midway-style games, temporary tattoos, and bubbles, several nonprofits will have booths on the grounds. The Rotary Club will draw its Green Monster raffle at 5 p.m. The Clinton Lions Club is doing the food concession. The Clinton Elks are sponsoring the "adult libation" area, which will sell alcoholic beverages donated by Wine Merchant, Wyman's Liquors and Mike's Hard Lemonade. There will also be a silent auction of baseball memorabilia.
For the Red Sox fans in the audience, there will be a "Dunk a Yank Tank." So far, Clinton Selectman Kevin Haley has agreed to take his turn in the tank. Several "notorious" Yankee fans, as well as some good sports, will be in the wet seat.
In addition, the chamber is partnering with the Worcester Tornadoes professional baseball team for marketing, and the team's mascot, Twister, will throw out the first pitch.
For those looking for a special way for their child to watch the game, while taking home a souvenir, the chamber will be selling blow-up baseball mitt chairs for $15, ready to use and enjoy.
McCaffrey said the event was a lot of fun for the cranks last year.
"It is kind of a unique thing, very theatrical," she said. "Although they are playing a game, they are also acting, staying in character with the time period, which is a fun thing."
Visitors from outside the area will also be encouraged to explore what Clinton has to offer.
"People who live here know Clinton has a lot of good things here," McCaffrey said, adding that visitors will be encouraged to visit local stores and restaurants while they are in the area. "We hope to show people from outside the area just what the town has to offer."
Committee member Tena Zapantis said she attended last year's event, and was more than willing to jump in to help plan this year's program.
"I love being a part of chamber events, and I have always been fascinated with the history of baseball, and the almost magical spell it casts on people," Zapantis said. "ĘI enjoy seeing the community come together for a great fun-filled family event."
Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and $2 for children over the age of 6. Bleacher seating is limited. Fans are encouraged to bring folding chairs or blankets for picnic-style seating.
The event sponsor is Nypro. Other sponsors, partners and contributors include: Blazing Sign, Dunn and Co., Elks Club, Worcester Tornados, Clinton Rotary Club, Clinton Hospital and Realty Vision.

Is there anyone else out there willing to play????? I really think it would be a black eye on vintage base ball in New England if we couldnt field two teams out of a possible 20 or so in New England. I dont know the numbers of people they expect but last year there were 500 people.

Hey everyone,

Im trying to iron out all the details for the All Star Game… Im not sure if I am getting everyone’s emails so if you think you have emailed me and I didn’t respond then I probably didn’t get it. So far this is how we are looking

MA Team
Essex (2)- Lynn (2)- Boston Beaneaters (2)- Westfield (1)- Meddowe (1)- Mudville (?)

Non MA
Dirigo (2-3)- Game Hens (?)- Waterbury (1)- NH Granite (2 but just 86 game)- Sandy Hooks (?)

Judging by these numbers we may want to have 3 if not 4 guys from a team right now… I hope we can at least get 18 and it doesn’t look like 18 right now…

Let me know what you guys can do.

Brian

Hey everyone,
Im trying to finalize everything for the Clinton All Star Game Saturday August 25th and was hoping to tie a few things up by the end of the week...
Teams
Essex BBC- Lynn Live Oaks- Boston Beaneaters- Mudville BBC- Westfield Wheelmen- Meddowe BBC- Dirigo BBC- Waterbury Connors- NH Granite- Cornish Game Hens-Newtown Sandy Hooks
11 teams- Am I missing any?

Other things I need to know
#1 Are you sending 1 guy or 2--- Depending on the numbers I may ask some teams to send three but I will have to wait and see.
#2 Is your team planning on playing in both 61 and 86- just 61- or just 86

This is still open so if there are other teams out there who have interest in coming please let me know. It should be a lot of fun. Please let me know if you would like the flier that is being sent out about the game- Ill forward it to you.

Directions, team break downs, etc and that will come next week once I figure some of that other stuff out.

Hey guys,

This is a message I got from Kristen Sherman from Island Alliance.  She is looking to put together some vintage base ball games for Labor Day weekend and I told her I would be happy to pass this along to all of the other teams in New England.  Essex has played on Georges Island several times in previous years and I must says it is a great place to play and I would jump at the chance to be part of this if we weren’t committed to a tournament in Roxbury, NY.  Georges Island is an old fort with a parade ground (no backstop) so it may be tough to do an 86 game out there, but we did play the Grays in an 84 game there so overhand is possible it may just be a little harder.  Please respond to her and not the group if you are interested, I don’t have anything to do with this game I am simply passing this message along.  If people do have questions on the set up of the grounds I can answer those questions for you though…

Guys, I think I might have accidentally deleted the posting that
contained the proposal for a league next year. Here it is again.
Please contact me with any questions or suggestions.

New England Vintage Base Ball Association (Proposal)

William Terry Division Charles Radbourn Division

Hartford Senators Cornish Game Hens of Providence
Bridgeport Orators New Hampshire Granite
Westfield Wheelmen Boston Beaneaters
Simsbury Taverneers Boston Colonials

Scheduling
1. Each club must play each member of their division twice between
April & October. This will create a total of six divisional games for
each club.
2. Each club must play all four clubs in the other division once each
between April & October.

• Clubs can choose to schedule as many additional contests as they
like, with league member clubs or non-members. Only league games
count for standings, however.
• You can satisfy the requirement of two games against a divisional
opponent by playing a doubleheader.
• This creates a minimum season schedule of ten games. Each club in
the proposed league already plays that many games. Basically no one
would have to add or subtract from their schedule. Clubs who play
much more than ten games can go right on doing so. Clubs who play
fewer games will not be overly taxed by playing the minimum of ten.

Standings
1. Because some clubs will play more than the minimum of ten league
games, standings would be decided strictly by win percentage
(including league games only). 1st tie-break would be head-to-head
record. 2nd tie-break would be divisional record. 3rd tie-break
would involve a bare-knuckle boxing match between captains.

Championship
1. The championship will take place between the two division winners.
It would be a three-game series to be held at a date and TBD.
2. Though a playoff system might sound attractive to some, it is
probably too difficult to schedule. It also wasn't done in the 1880s,
so it's probably not a good idea.

Rules
1. I think we are all familiar with the 1886 National League rules.
We would use these rules in all games.
2. I don't think anyone is using illegal equipment. We all know what
is acceptable and what isn't. There's probably no need to get into
all that nonsense. I'm sure there are more concerns to be discussed.
It's only nearing July and we have a ton of time before next season
to work all of this out. Every year many of us talk about a league
and how nice it would be to have standings and an actual championship.
Let's just make it happen!

Additional Clubs:
1. I have included only clubs that I am aware of who play 1886 as
their PRIMARY year and also play 10 or more games routinely.
Certainly any club that wanted to participate could do so (Pittsfield,
Newtown, Meddowe, Providence Grays, etc.).
2. This is obviously just a jumping off point and is completely fluid.

Sincerely,
Patrick Reilly

Hi Pat,

I definitely want to make the NEVBBL happen for next year.  I like your format of 8 teams in 2 divisions.  Let's definitely work on this in the offseason to finalize a schedule and set it all up.  I have a few ideas:

1. Umpires - I think each HOME team should have an umpire.  The teams could "hire" an 1886 umpire for the going rate, $70 per game and the home team pays.

2. Website with standings and stats on your NEVBBL website.

3. All-Star Game.  I played at Holy Cross and maybe we could get their new stadium for an all-star game in Worcester before/after a Tornados game.  It would be good for our league.  I will look into it.

4. Playoffs - I think we should have playoffs for each division in a weekend tournament format with a rain date the following weekend:

Saturday:

#1 vs #4 at #1
#2 vs #3 at #2

Sunday:

Division winners play Championship at higher seed's field

League Championship

2 weekends (3 games) - first weekend double header, second weekend (if necessary) or 3 separate weekends.

Thanks for all your work on this!  It is a great proposal and the Granite definitely want to see it happen!

Gentlemen, as some of you may know, I have been working on a
documentary covering vintage base ball in New England. The film will
be available for download at newenglandvintagebaseball.com on Monday,
July 30th. This is a free download, and a completely not-for-profit
film. If you want a DVD copy of the film, send me an e-mail, and I'll
send you one for $1, which will cover the cost of a blank DVD and
postage. This film will be updated as our game evolves throughout
this year and beyond, but I hope you enjoy what has been filmed so
far. Any questions can be directed to game_hens@.... Thanks!

Hey guys,

I apologize to those who get this 2 or 3 times, I just wanted to make sure everyone knew about it… I guess the all star game in Clinton will be the same format as last year- that was not how I was told it was going to be but I guess my opinion was left out of the discussion….. Let me know if you will be attending if you have not already done so.  These are the teams I have already
Essex- Lynn- Boston Beaneaters- Mudville- Game Hens- Dirigo- Waterbury

Hi Brian,

Just wanted to give you an update on what’s going on here in Clinton.

We are excited about the upcoming game and tickets and posters are now on the streets.  We decided to stick with the same format as last year:  Gates open at noon, 2 pm 1860’s and 4 pm 1880’s style.  We have also decided to have some fun things for kids to do, such as a dunking booth this year, so there should be plenty for kids to do between games too.

Do you think you can get the names of the teams who are playing this year by the week of August 6?

Let me know if you have any questions or thoughts.

Thanks and have a good weekend,

Maegen

Gentlemen, I recently met a master latheman in Providence who has
begun to hand-turn custom bats for our club. His name is Bob and he
is now taking orders for 19th Century base ball bats of all sorts. If
you have a custom bat you'd like made, a broken bat you'd like

Hey guys,

I am probably not an expert on this and I am sure some of my techniques
are wrong but I posted a slideshow on our web site on how to make a
1861 style lemon peel baseball. It may help some of you who want to
try. I thought I would mention that and also say we have a slideshow on
how we made a bat. The pictures of making a baseball will also be
posted in the photos section so people can get a closer look.
