The team that wins the toss gets to choose to be visiting or home team. The home team must provide the balls for the game. That's the way we were introduced into the game by the Hartford Senators. From there, I guess it's just strategy. Knowing how many runs you may need to catch up to win or tie the game, knowing that you have the pitching to complete the nine inning contest by choosing to be visitors or have the feeling the you if you get a good start that might discourage your opponent and kill their spirit.

Ok, we've talked about historical accuracy with catcher's gear and
umpire positioning. Does anyone know what the prefered choice by 19th
century teams when it came winning the coin toss? Does it make sense
to take your last at bats or start-out batting?
