Tony Leesman and Larry Nava knew Joe Mauer before the
$5.1 million signing bonus, the national honors and
the hype. They know him as more than a schoolboy
legend and the 2003 minor-league baseball player of
the year.
He’s more than the Minnesota Twins’ next catcher.
Mauer is their friend, their ex-teammate at
Cretin-Derham Hall High in St. Paul, Minn., and their
host in Fort Myers while they’re visiting this month.
“He’s still the same old Joe,” Leesman said. “He
hasn’t changed one bit. He hasn’t let any of that
money go to his head. You wouldn’t know that he’s got
as much money as he has. He’s just an ordinary Joe.”
