The Fort Myers Miracle used some late inning heroics
to defeat the Lakeland Tigers 7-5 in 10 innings at
Joker Merchant Stadium on Tuesday night.
Luis Maza deposited a 2-0 fastball onto the left field
hill for a two run homer in the 10th and the Miracle
completed their dramatic come from behind victory. In
the ninth inning, the Miracle trailed by a run, but
with one out Steohen Tope singled to left, his third
hit of the night. Brett Tamburrino then singled to

Blum at the plate, Tamburrino took off on a 2-2 pitch
and catcher Russ Cleveland’s thrown wound up in center
field. That allowed Tope to score the tying run and
Tamburrino went to third. With the infield playing in,
Blum hit a grounder to third and Ryan Raburn gunned
Tamburrino out at the plate.
In the bottom of the ninth, Pat Neshek came out of the
bullpen and gave up a lead off double to David Mattle.
Raburn then grounded out weakly to first, but moved
Raburn to third. Neshek setteled down and got
Cleveland and Alfredo Lugo on strikes to end the
inning. Neshed got two more strikeouts in the 10th to
pick up his second victory of the season.
Colby Miller started the game for the Miracle and got
into trouble in the second. He allowed four runs in
the innings (two earned) and the Tigers held a 4-0
advantage until the sixth.
In the top of the sixth, Tope reached on a two base
fielding error by right fielder Mattle. Tommy Watkins
singled him to third. Greg Blum then doubled in Tope
and Michael Sandoval hit an infield single that scored
Watkins. One out later James Tomlin singled in Blum.
With the tying run at third, Jake Mauer bounced into
an inning ending double play.
Miller settled down and retired 10 in a row, but gave
up a lead off double to Juan Tejada in the sixth. He
would later score on a sac fly from Raburn.
The Miracle answered with a run in the seventh when
Maza walked and Jason Kubel hit a pop up to short that
Jason Kelly dropped. Tope then smashed a double to
left that scored Maza and brought the Miracle within a
run. Tiger reliever John Birtwell, however, struck out
the next three Miracle to leave the tying and go ahead
runs on base.
Every Miracle collected at least one hit as the
Miracle pounded out 15 on the night.
