Adam Harben was dominant and Scott Whitrock broke out
of a slump with a pair of hits as the Quad City River
Bandits snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-2
win over the Kane County Cougars on Tuesday night at
Elfstrom Stadium. Whitrock had two hits after having
been hitless in his previous 16 at-bats, while Peter
Tautor struck out four over two innings to pick up his
first professional save.
The River Bandits took the lead in the top of the
first inning. With one out, Jesus Merchan doubled down
the left field line. After Seth Davidson was retired,
Danny Matienzo launched a double to right-center,
allowing Merchan to score easily. Matienzo currently
now has a ten-game hitting streak, the fourth
double-digit streak by a Bandit this year.
Quad City added to the edge in the top of the third.
Scott Whitrock had an infield single to short to open
the inning, and took third on Trent Oeltjen’s single.
Jesus Merchan bounced into a fielder’s choice to bring
Whitrock home.
But Kane County was able to answer in the bottom of
the frame as John Baker singled to bring home John
McCurdy, who had doubled with one out.
The River Bandits scored again in the top of the
fourth, pushing across another two-out run. With two
away, Jose Morales lined a single, and J.D. Huether
followed with a walk. Whitrock came up big again,
lining a single into left to score Morales for a 3-1
Quad City lead.
Adam Harben was dominant in his third start for Quad
City. The 19-year-old lasted a career-long seven
innings, allowing just one run on four hits. Harben
struck out four and walked one. He did not allow a hit
over his final four innings of work as he picked up
his second win of the year.
Tautor came on in the eighth inning and, after
allowing a leadoff walk, struck out three straight
Cougars. In the ninth, Tautor allowed a one-out homer
to Brant Colamarino to slice the lead to 3-2. After
Nick Rogers singled with two away, Tautor struck out
McBeth to seal his first professional save.
