Double A
==================================
John Van Benschoten and two relievers combined on a
three-hitter as the Altoona Curve topped the New
Britain Rock Cats, 3-1.
Van Benschoten (1-0) yielded an unearned run and three
hits with three strikeouts in six innings, lowering
his ERA to 2.11 and earning his first win in the Class
AA Eastern League. Jeff Bennett picked up his first
save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning as Altoona held its
opponent to one run for the fourth time in its last
six games, all of them victories. Brett Roneberg hit a
two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning and
Kevin Nicholson added a fifth inning sacrifice fly to
pace the Curve, who have won two in a row.
Rob Bowen, who is hitting .511 (24-for-47) in his last
15 games, drove in the only run of the game for New
Britain with a single in the fifth. Henry Bonilla
(3-2) gave up three runs and nine hits in seven
innings, walking four and fanning a batter to suffer
the defeat, the ninth in the last 12 games for the
Rock Cats.

Jim Abbott led the league in ERA starting Wednesday
nights game at Jack Russell Memorial Stadium, but he
didn’t have his best stuff lasting just 0.2 of an
inning as the Clearwater Phillies defeated the Fort
Myers Miracle 9-4.
Abbott gave up five runs in the first, his most in any
start this season. The Miracle tried to come back,
getting a run in the second on a double play groundout
that scored Jason Kubel. They scored another in the
third, fourth and got an RBI single from Stephen Tope
in the fifth, but never got closer than two runs.
