The Fort Myers Miracle got one run in the first and hung on the rest of the way
to defeat the Dunedin Blue Jays and clinch the first half Western Division
title. 1-0 on Sunday evening at Grant Field.
Colby Miller went 8.1 shutout innings, allowing five hits while walking one and
striking out three to earn his sixth victory of the season. Beau Kemp threw one
pitch, in relief, and got Aaron McEachran to ground into a game ending double
play.
The only run for the Miracle came in the first inning, when James Tomlin led off
the game with a walk. He went to second on a sac bunt by Tommy Watkins and
advanced to third on a single from Joe Mauer. Jason Kubel then hit a sac fly to
left to drive in the only run of the game. Blue Jay starter Chad Pleiness went
seven innings allowing one run on one hit, while walking two and striking out
three.
The Miracle can finish no worse than in a tie for first, but there is no playoff
in the FSL. The first tie breaker is head to head matchup. The Miracle are
currently 4-3 against the Blue Jays this season with one game remaining, meaning
they can finish no worse than tied in that category. The second tie breaker is
divisional record. The Miracle are now 27-15 in the west while the Blue Jays are
22-20 with just four games to go. Even if the Miracle lost their remaining four
games and the Blue Jays won their remaining four games, the Miracle would win
the second tie breaker, thus giving them the first half division championship.

Josh Hill pitched six scoreless innings and the River Bandits got a pair of
two-run hits from Garrett Guzman and Danny Matienzo as Quad City defeated the
Lansing Lugnuts 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at Oldsmobile Park. The game was delayed
by rain in the top of the eighth inning and, after a delay of 36 minutes,
declared complete due to unplayable field conditions.
After Quad City threatened but couldn’t score in the first, Quad City took the
lead in the top of the second inning. Omar Burgos walked, and Alex Romero
reached on an error. With one out, Guzman drove a line drive deep into the
left-center gap for a bases-clearing triple and a 2-0 Quad City lead.
The Bandits added to the lead in the second inning when, after Matienzo reached
on a fielder’s choice, Burgos had a double down the right field line. With two
men in scoring position, Alex Romero’s chopper was mishandled by shortstop Buck
Coats, allowing Matienzo to score for a 3-0 lead.
The River Bandits added two more runs in the sixth inning. After Burgos walked
and Romero doubled down the right field line, Quad City had men at second and
third. Scott Whitrock reached on an error to score a run, and Guzman grounded
out to score Romero for a 5-0 lead.
Josh Hill lasted six scoreless innings for Quad City, allowing just three base
hits while striking out two. Hill got into a pair of early jams by coaxing
double play ground balls, and wasn’t in trouble after the third inning. Hill
improves to 4-1 on the season, tying for the team lead in wins.
The Bandits piled on in the seventh inning, as Matienzo drilled a two run homer
to left. After Seth Davidson had singled into left against reliever Dan Foli,
Matienzo drove a fastball down the left field line. His line shot clipped the
foul pole for his fourth homer of the year. Matienzo is now tied with Davidson
and Bryan Kennedy for the team lead in that category.
Erik Lohse pitched a perfect seventh before the rain came in the top of the
eighth.

The San Diego Padres picked the right time to have their biggest inning of the
season.
Mark Loretta slapped a two-run single and Ryan Klesko and Brian Buchanan belted
two-run homers during a six-run eighth inning as the Padres rallied for a 9-4
victory over the Minnesota Twins.
After knotting the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, the Padres found
themselves behind following Torii Hunter's solo homer in the top of the eighth.
But in the bottom half, San Diego recorded its biggest inning of the season to
gain just its second victory in six interleague contests.
