New Britain sweeps doubleheader

Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulliten
From staff reports

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- Early runs from New Britain doomed the Binghamton
Mets in both games of their Eastern League doubleheader on Thursday
afternoon.

New Britain scored all of its runs in a 4-3 opening game victory in the
first inning. The Rock Cats won the second game at New Britain Stadium,
7-2, after scoring twice in the first inning.

The B-Mets (6-15), who have lost nine of their last 10 road games, return
home tonight for the start of an eight-game homestand. The Portland Sea
Dogs are in town for a three-game series beginning at 7:05 p.m. today at
NYSEG Stadium.

Felix Molina led off the first inning of Game 1 with a double and scored
on Garrett Guzman's fielder's choice. B-Mets' starter Michael Devaney then
walked the bases loaded to set up former B-Met Gil Velazquez's
bases-clearing triple, giving New Britain a 4-0 lead.

Miguel Negron had an RBI and a run scored in the third, and Mark Kiger
added an RBI sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Devaney (0-2) pitched all seven innings for the B-Mets, allowing four
hits. It was the first complete game by a B-Mets pitcher since Kevin
Mulvey threw one in a doubleheader against Connecticut last season. Jose
Coronado had three hits.

In the second game, David Winfree's double gave New Britain a 2-0
first-inning lead. B-Mets starter Ricardo Morales (2-2) retired nine
batters in a row, but gave up three more runs in the fifth. Matt Allegra
added a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth off Marcello Perez.

Negron scored a run and drove in another for the B-Mets in the second
game.

B-Mets center fielder Fernando Martinez had five hits on the day.
