Here is a preliminary schedule for the 2008 New England Racewalking Grand Prix. Many specifics will follow as the season draws closer.
Jan. 20 3K Greater Boston TC Invitational, Harvard U. track, 9:30 a.m.
Feb. 24, 3K, New England Indoor Track & Field Championships, Harvard track.
March 30, 3K, National Masters Indoor Championships, Reggie Lewis Center.
June ??, 3K, New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
July ??, 3K, Bay State Games.
That would take us to the middle of the year with nothing but 3Ks on our schedule. Some of us have talked informally of putting on an 8K somewhere at some point. Further thoughts from anyone are most welcome.
beyond that, we also have:
July ?? 5K, New England or Eastern Masters meet, Springfield College.
Sept. ?? 10K, New England Walkers race, Riverdale course in Brookline.
Oct. ?? USA 1-hour championships, Bentley College, Waltham.
Oct. or Nov. 10K, Connecticut Racewalkers event.
PLUS:
At Tom Knatt's suggestion, we will include Senior Games performances for those age 50 and above (which seems to be most of us)
And, also at Tom's suggestion, we will include one performance in any national championship outside of the aforementioned national races in New England.
As always, Grand Prix scores will be tabulated by measuring a walker's performance in each race against international age-graded tables. A walker's four best scores for the year will constitute his or her final total.
If there is anything anyone would like to add, subtract, or change, please let us hear from you.
As usual, race walking is the butt of a cruel joke. Perez is pretty cool
about it though.

News & Notes, Volume 8, Number 93
Eastler, Vaill win Ron Zinn awards
USA Track & Field has announced that Kevin Eastler and Teresa
Vaill are the winners of the 2007 Captain Ron Zinn Awards that honor the
outstanding U.S. male and female race walkers of the year. Formal
presentation of the awards will take place December 1 in ceremonies held
in conjunction with USATF's Annual Meeting at the Sheraton Waikiki in
Honolulu, Hawaii.
The annual awards commemorate the achievements of Captain Ronald
Zinn, who lost his life in combat during the Vietnam War. Zinn was a
member of the U.S. Olympic Team at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. His
sixth-place finish in the 20 km race walk is one of America's all-time
top international race walking performances.
Kevin Eastler, a 30-year old Air Force captain stationed at Buckley
Air Force Base in Colorado, started walking as a 9-year old in
Farmington, Maine. His 21st year in race walking may have been his best
to date as he won the 50 km and 20 km national championships, as well as
the Pan American Cup Trials. He also posted an Olympic "A"
Standard qualifying time of 1:22:56 with a 12th place finish at the IAAF
Race Walking Challenge in Spain. Eastler, who resides in Aurora, Colo.,
with his wife and daughter, also was the recipient of this award in 2003
and 2006.
This year marks the sixth time that 45 year-old Teresa Vaill has been
recognized as America's top female race walker. The winner of the 2007
USA Track & Field Championship in the 20 km walk in 1:37:28, Vail
made 2007 a stellar year by dominating the Pan Am Cup Trials in 1:35:44
and seizing victory at the USA 10 kilometer National Championships with a
time of 47:49. A resident of Gainesville, Fla., Vaill was previously
named the Ron Zinn award winner in 1986, 1993, 1994, 2004 and 2005.
Forgues, Vergara twins named Henry Laskau Award winners
Lauren Forgues and twins Ricardo and Roberto Vergara, have been named the 2007 Henry Laskau Award winners. Now in its fourth year, the Laskau Awards are presented annually to the top USA junior male and female race walkers. The awards will be presented during ceremonies December 1 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The Laskau Awards commemorate the three-time Olympian's accomplishments not only as an athlete, but as an inspirational master of the sport who promoted race walking at many levels, including converting numerous runners into race walkers. Laskau, who passed away in May of 2000, was the second race walker ever inducted into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame.
University of Maine sophomore Lauren Forgues, from Boothbay, Maine, had
a spectacular year. Not only did she take second (13:55.9 for 3,000m) among the top female walkers in the country at the AT&T USA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boston last February, she was the winner of both the Pan American Cup Trials (50:35) and the USA Junior Nationals (51:49). Last summer Forgues went to South America twice to represent the USA in international competitions. In May's Pan American Race Walk Cup, Forgues earned the bronze medal in a field that represented teams of walkers from the top countries in the Americas. Later that summer in July, she finished as the runner-up at the Junior Pan American Games in Brazil.
The first twins of race walking, the Vergaro's from Edinburg, Texas, are generally inseparable. And just as they did at this year's two major competitions, the USA Junior National Championships, and the Pan American Cup Trials, the 17 year olds finished 1-2 in most races. Roberto won the USA Nationals in 47:28 with Ricardo taking the title at the PAC Trials with a 48:02 effort.
Race walk competitor/official Lori Maynard dies
Longtime master level official and race walk enthusiast Lori Maynard died at her home in Redwood City, Calif. on Sunday, November 18.
A national class race walker in the late 70s and early 80s, Maynard held numerous masters records and titles. In 2005 she was inducted into the Masters Athlete's Hall of Fame. She was a master level track and field official and an international race walk judge, who officiated at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics, and she served as the manager of several USA Track and Field international teams. Maynard also served on many administrative committees within USA Track & Field over the last two decades.
Earlier this year Maynard and her husband Sonny were each honored for 25 years of volunteer service with Stanford Track and Field.
A Celebration of Life will be held in mid-December. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Community Breast Health Project in Palo Alto.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years Ferrell "Sonny" Maynard; son, Don; daughter-in-law, Andrea and sister, Janice Dudley.
Dear Lorrie & and other interested racewalkers,
The M.I.T. events are at the M.I.T. fieldhouse near the outdoor track and
Kresge auditorium opposite 77 Massachusetts Ave. in Cambridge MA. Parking
is on Vassar Street. The new B.U. fieldhouse is near about 1000
Commonwealth Ave. in Boston. Steve, Justin and others are preparing to go,
or have gone to Hawaii for the Annual Convention of the USATF. They can
give you an exact address in a week or two.
The National Masters is at the Reggie Lewis Track in Roxbury MA. It is on
Columbus Ave. That isn't until March.

I am a "newbe" myself to the sport.... just signed-up with New England Walkers last week and would welcome any coaching and advice from you "vets" of the sport . I am certainly going to try and make the 2 events you suggest below. As we get closer to them, will there be more information posted as to the exact location...or where can I find that ?

Hello,
My name is Jim Fraser. I have yet to enter a race walking event - I just started
this fall. Do you think the indoor venues are a good place to start?
Thanks for the input and have a good Thanksgiving.

Dear group,
I'd be interested in doing most of these. I am planning to go to
Clermont-Ferrand in France in March for the world indoor meet. I'll need
plenty of practice. I'll be back for Reggie Lewis.

Here is the very tentative schedule for indoor racewalks
Some are tentative and will only go if I get a feel for the interest in
conducting them.
Unless noted, there won't be any time standards
The estimated entry fee is also noted. Some of the TF meets will require
the standard meet entry fee. They might be higher than our frugal RW
standard fees, but note that in most cases you can continue and get a nice
indoor workout / walk before and after
These are all on comfortable 200 meter tracks

SNOW! You are so lucky....
cross country is the best alternative to racewalking
when snow does not let you walk.
I am training to tour the Craftsbury marathon in
February. Anyone interested in XCing on weekends, or
hopefully nights at Weston Ski Track please let me
know. I would live the company.
Hapy Holidays everyone !!

It is snowing hard in Woodstock Vermont. I went on a 5K snowy racewalk. It was
so very beautiful - the first real snow of the season.
Happy winter to all of you . . .!

A nice response from the owner and promoter of the slattery's Racewalk. this is the kind of response we need to complete our mission!! Save the chumps from their body lumps!.
( or go back to 'Zen': when racewalking, racewalk...when carrying water, just carry. when watching unhealthy folk, just observe...)
"Josef, Thank you for your participation, it was a great day for everyone. I value your input on the walking matters, as I realize that is a potential growth area for the race. We're in a busy period for the holidays, but perhaps after the first of the year we can communicate further. Have a great holiday season..." Dave Celuzza, owner Slattery's restaurant
Steve, I have to agree that they race for the $$. Slattery's has a good-sized
purse for 1st place.
Nonetheless, it is a a fun race. Congratulations, Josef.

Dear New England Walkers,
Once again I woke up with doubts. why am I doing this 5 -miler, two steep
hills and all!
for the past five years I have participated; in 2006 , won all mens
overall for the first time, and before, took home a prize or two.
Slattery's is a great race environment. they really create a friendly and
inviting scene.
It might get more recognistion if the course was accurately measured and
the course certified.
they provide water, drinks, soup,
sandwiches, hotdogs, and beer! [all from Slattery's restaurant.] This
race has all the potential. The people who run it, starting with the
owner, Dave Celuzza, are forward looking, and great folk.
Of course, the main attraction is still the 27 years big road race. The
winner today was an Ethiopian. second was from Ireland. first woman was
also Ethiopian, i believe. These are runners seeking Olympic status.
The cynical me, knowing the running scene, says that their goal is
primarily to race for money.
But the walk race has been
taking on its own dimension.
about 150 of us started an hour earlier. Prizes would be awarded to first
and second, men and women, below and above 50 {I would like them to go to
age 58 as the dividing line.].
turkeys are the main prize.
I came in 4th overall, but first in my age group, and 7 seconds behind
'Liberato'-an Italian no less, who I believe is age 58.
Now the interesting statistics: our times were almost 8 minutes less than
the winning walkers, men under 50, and women over 50.
Okay, I am hooked again...
no problems, no pains, no cramps..and feel great after...must be getting
better with age! (not faster)
and there was no cheating...
So next year I am going to offer some racewaking classes, and see if we
can build up an elite class of 'Turkey Trot' Walkers!
Anyone want to volunteer?
contact me at: 978-807-6306, if you want to talk.

Thanks to fellow racewalker Jay Diener for once again putting on a first class race. The organization was superb, the course was scenic and challenging, the food was delicious, and I especially liked the $$$ at the end. I highly recommend this race to anyone who wants to walk or run a fall half marathon.
Congratulations to Dot Zullo and Bill Harriman for their first-place finishes in Sunday's Seacoast Half Marathon in Portsmouth, NH. This was Dot's first time at this race. Bill tied for first last year with Bob Aucoin. 44 walkers completed the race this year. The times and pace for the first 10 finishers are listed below:
2:19:37 (10:39) Dot Zullo 2:29:11 (11:23) Bill Harriman 2:34:12 (11:46) Itziar Garcia 2:37:21 (12:01) Helen MacEdo 2:45:55 (12;40) Elaine Fencl 2:46:39 (12:43) Joanne Harriman 2:47:26 (12:47) Karen Konisky 2:47:26 (12:47) John Elliott 2:48:28 (12:52) Michael Hoffer 2:52:17 (13:09) Charlene Packham
Likewise, I am nursing a re-injured broken foot obtained from fooluishly racing my dogs on my 70th birthday last Thursday. It felt real good to be running again after 30 years of a busted calf muscle that I could race walk on but not run on. Calves are not too important for racewalking unless you are really good.
Anyway, the folklore among us older but competitive runners who are always getting injured, at least up to 30 years ago, is that if you lay off completely it will take longer to heal your injury than if you continue to run on it but rather slowly. A corollory is that you should run right on the injury to avoid more injuries, all the while monitoring the injured limb to make sure it is not getting worse. It should actually feel better after 1/2 hr. But you then have to be careful not to get carried away and should quit after an hour or so. However, that can be repeated several times a day for maximum benefit.
A few years ago, ask Tom Knatt, I used this regimen to heal a hip injury. Early in the AM I would warm up on my street in West Concord, just a couple blocks from Tom's old home, we are so familiar with, and then drive to Arlington where I would race walk a mile to Alewife T station, get off at Kendall and racewalk to work near the Charles River dam, something Tom used to do when he had a real job. Then I would walk 4 miles around the Charles River at noon, and repeat the walks on the way home, and walk again in my neighborhood, at total of 7 separate walks a day.
After a few months of that and with a few fast tune walks at noon, I did a 2:05 20KM in RI, beating Bill for probably the last time in this lifetime.
Anyway, the point is that slow walking or running is very healing. One day while reading SKI Magazine in my auto mechanic's office, I got comfirmation of that folklore.
The story was about Austrian Ernst Maiher (sp?) who had shattered his leg wiping out in the previous Olympics downhill ski race. He healed himself by biking on a stationary bike for 8 or so hours a day. He stopped every hour to stretch and take a blood sample. Seems that a particuliar chemical in the blood had to be kept below a certain level for healing to take place.
Soon it became apparent that all he had to do was to keep his pulse rate below 120 per minute. That resonated with me as when I was a runner and did lots of sprints and jogs, my pulse rate during the jogs always dropped to 120 and stayed there. My fellow runners had the same experience. So it seemed reasonable that the pulse rate would automatically drop to the rate where recovery was maximized.
By the way, he came back to win a Gold Medal in either the World Cup or the Olympics, I forget which.
Now presumably you have to exercise at enough intensity to raise the pulse rate say to 90 or 100 at least to get the healing benefit and keep at it for at least 1/2 hour. So what kind of biological mechanism is being invoked by such behavior. Well, recently my fife and drum company, the Bostonia Allarum Companie, did a gig at the Boston Convention Center for the AARP where Theresa Vaille gave a lecture and demonstratuion of what she calls Chi Walking. So one possibility is that the healing comes from the generation of Chi.
Almost from when I started race walking in 1980, at the age of 43, I have chanted mantras from various religions: Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism (but not Islam- they do not seem to have mantras) while race walking, sort of an effort to kill two birds ....Well, it at least was not boring, and perhaps that contributed to Chi. But I would rather call it Yoga Walking. The random but rather
creative ideas that come to me during such Yoga Racewalking suggests that I get into a heightened state of spiritual awareness.
My experience is that such an experience is more likely on a long slow racewalk where I am likely in the healing state with a pulse rate less than 120. On the few occasions when I tried it during an actual race, it just slowed me down.
So if any of you out there are prone to spiritual materialism, I recommend writing a book on Yoga Walking and joining the convention circuit to promote it like Theresa.
