Good call, canceling. This allowed my husband to make a
wonderful Mother's Day brunch and shortly I'll be off to give
blood. If I'm up for it later, I'll go to the indoor track at
the JCC.
Beth
We are warriors and we are tougher than the toughest. I ran the Boston broiler in 1976. Marcia walked a marathon in Antarctica. We are crazed but we are nor stupid. Why drown like rats at Danehy Park to prove our man/womanhood? I'm off to the gym for a nice treadmill walk.
With the heavy rain coming in tomorrow and the possibility of another flooded basement, I will have to cancel the Danehy race for May. Hopefully it will stop raining by June.
I say, bring an umbrella and let the toughest man or woman win!
Like this? (See the photo, attached, from my Houston race)
Tom, what you DON'T say is whether you are actually coming on Sunday! Having blocked out the time, I'm available and won't melt. But I have other things I can do if we cancel. Either way...

Bill is most welcome to judge. Thanks Heidi. There's post-entry only. Will probably be around $10.
As for Bob's question about 15k, this was originally planned as a 10k. I vaguely recall talk of including an optional 15k. We can do it. It would involve two separate starting lines and would only be done if weather is decent--I wouldn't ask judges to stand around for over 90 min in foul weather.

Joe,
I'm coming to race and Bill can judge if you wish. Let us know. Also, do we need to register prior to the race or can we do it when we arrive?
Another one. More importantly, on Sunday are we racing? Yes or No. Bill
said he'll come if there are 6? I'll come if there are 5. Heck, maybe
I'll even come if there are 4. But so far I haven't heard anybody
commit. Just talk. I'd like to know if I'm helping/racing at Danehy or
giving blood.

Does this mean that you lily-livered pipsqueaks are afraid of a little rain? I can remember racing Steve V. for 30 K, at Fresh Pond, with 6 inches of snow on the ground. We had to walk in our own footprints each successive lap. (P.S. I won) Also, we did a 5K race in Attleboro where one corner of the track had 2 " of water on one corner. I say, bring an umbrella and let the toughest man or woman win!
A week of rain will make the course at Danehy impassible, since it always floods at that far end of the field about 200 meters after the start. The only way we could have a race would be if we did 10 laps around the short loop near the parking lot, and I don't know if that's over or under 5k. I will show up if there are at least 6 people who really do want to race rain or shine on the short loop, otherwise I'm fine with cancelling it.

Steve, this reminds me of the race you conducted on the MIT track 20 years
ago in which anyone could walk any distance he wanted.
I'm remembering Tom Knatt, Dick Ruquist, and Myrna Finn going 20K, my doing
10K, George Lattarulo and one of Brian's old cronies from the Central Mass.
Striders going some in-between distance, and a few people doing 5K and
going home early.
I'm not imagining all this, am I? Are the official results lost to
posterity?

The next Danehy Park 5K will be happen next Sunday 5/14 at 10 AM and I could use one or two more volunteers to help me out. Joanne will be at a Mothers Day race in Melrose, and Charlie Mansbach has offered to help but another person or two would be good.
Also, there will be an early bird special for anybody who wants to get a race in at 9 AM. I will race the course then and anyone who is ready to go at 9 can join me.
So the 10k is 2 weeks from today at 11am. NinigretPark is just off rt. 1 in Charlestown. From the north, take 95 to about 10mi. south of Providence, the highway splits to Rt. 4 in left lanes. Follow rt. 4 south. It eventually merges with rt. 1. Follow rt. 1 south into Charlestown. Bring a picnic lunch and spend part of the afternoon. It’s a lovely place to hike with trails around salt marshes

"We have just the overall finishers this year, because we only have a few walkers signed up at the moment, but we do plan to do this race again so as we grow we will adjust. I am a walker and walk coach for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society Team in Training program, so I make sure walk is taken care of!!!! :)
