Well, (gulp) I got it sanctioned.

Ozark Trail. Two days with a 25/50 on Day #1. Day #2 has 30/50/75/100.

Different trails for both days for the LD's and 50's. The trails will be long keyhole out and backs. The hundreds will go out 25 miles and 25 back to main camp, then 25 miles out the opposite way and 25 back. The 50's will go out 25 and come back.

We have a nice base camp with 34 hookups, 80 stalls, 4 corral/paddocks, cabins, tee pees, hot showers, indoor plumbing, and several hundred acres for primitive camping.

Very scenic trail with hills, creeks, woods and meadows. Mostly single track with a few dirt logging roads. This is isolated National Forest country. I believe we only cross one or two paved roads in the 100. Maybe about a dozen dirt roads.

It should be a blast. More details later.

Hi Paul,
Trying to get a handle on the trail down there at your new ride( Congratulations on getting it done!!), are you
talking hills like down at the Chicken Chase ride in southern Indiana or are talking mountains with a 700- 800
ft of altitude difference or more???Other than that it sounds great and seriously considering making the trip from SE MN.

Thanks,

In other words, Susan is even upping some of the recommendations that
came out of Oregon State several years ago--and I'd second her
recommendation.

To put this in perspective, most "high selenium" supplements are
designed to deliver only 2 mg per day to the horse--so per our old
recommendations, one would have to feed them at 4-5x the "recommended"
level, or at Susan's recommendation, at about 8x the "recommended"
level, if one's forage is nearly devoid in selenium, as is the case
both in Oregon where my levels originated, or in SoCal, where Susan
practices. But to have a toxic dose, the horse would have to consume
600 days' worth of the "recommended" level. (In other words, don't
panic if your horse gets into the tack room and eats a bunch of it.)
Chronic toxicity actually occurs at about 60-90 mg per day--but that
kind of level has to go on for a couple of months or so to build up to
toxic levels. (And that would mean feeding most "high selenium"
supplements at 30-45x the daily "recommended" dose every day for that
time period.)

Additionally, one would have to live in an area where there are
practically toxic levels in the forage (rare indeed!) in order to get
any sort of toxicity from any normal levels of supplementation.

Does that help to put it into perspective? :-)

Subject: [new100milers] New 100 Mile Ride Update

Well we are getting closer. We are now at Option #3, which is much better than I had imagined. My thinking was that by now we would be up to Options #6 or #7:-)

Option #3 is on the Ozark Trail, with an established horse resort as base camp. They don't have the infrastructure that Cross Country Trail rides at Eminance has, but we probably didn't really need 3,000 stalls:-) Cross Country (Option#1) didn't seem to want us there, and we had several different governmental organizations to deal with. The US Forest Service people with jurisdiction over the Ozark Trail were very positive about the ride. The place we are locking it up with has about 30 electric and water hookups, 50 something stalls, some cabins to rent, tee pees, plus plenty of primitive camping room. They also have a nice room for ride meetings and awards. They have been inviting us to have an Endurance ride there for a couple of years.

Right now, subject to some tweaking, we are looking at two days of rides. Day #1 has an LD with all vet checks in camp, and a 50 that goes out 25 miles on the Ozark Trail  and comes back.  Day #2 has an LD  (30-35 miles?)that uses totally different trails, a 50 or 55 that goes out a different 25 miles and comes back, plus a 100 that goes out 25 miles, comes back, and goes out a different 25 miles and comes back. One vet check in camp, all the rest out of camp. Plus...Here is my question for you folks. How about a 75 that runs the same time and trails as the 100, but quits short?  Given the points change for 75 mile rides, it may attract more interest to that distance. Plus those riders who are more incremental in their approach may want that intermediate step between 50's and a 100. It should not add much in the way of logistical problems, as we will be using the same trails, vets and porta potties. Just might help some 50's reach a little further down the trail.

So...We are making a decision for the date. Last week of August could be hot, 90 degrees, and have little water on trail. Plus more hikers and bikers out there to share trail with. Mid September, 17th and 18th should be cooler, and have less traffic to contend with. Better moon phase for late August, but the tree cover is so heavy on most of the trail that should not help or hurt much.

So what do you think about a 75? We are looking at sanctioning in the next week or two.

PS: I am planning to use the (slightly modified) Angie McGee Ride Pricing System. 50's, 75's, and 100's pay the same entry fee. LD's are going to be a bit lower, as we are trying to bring in new blood.

Paul N. Sidio

You can look at Brushycreeklodge.com to see the camp, or ozarktrail.com to see the trail.

Oh yes, dont start Tevis with a bad case of walking punemonia, I knew I was sick when I left home, (( Y'All know that river in Egypt))   I was in emergency room in Auburn less than a week before ride day, and dr wanted me in hospital,  I was very sick. I told him I cant I have to ride this saturday. He said NOT TEVIS YOU CANT!!  But you know the endurance riders anthum, ""As long as the horse is OK I can make it somehow""   I left and went to Robi Park but since I was so sick I wasnt watching my horse very well and he got his hind foot over the picket rope and got a rope burn, he seeemed OK but as it turned out we had to pull early on. What I learned tho, is I saw allot of the trail, which I know has beeen changed some by now. And I got over the big first time  fright of Tevis.  I will be able to do a better job next time. And it gave me a better idea of how much you really do have to prepair. My horse was very ready, but not me!    That was the yrar that a very nice horse got his hind foot very stuck in the rocks at the boggs just into Granit Chief, I heard he broke his stifle, he had to be put down. I hiked out with that man and horse, to where the trailer could get us.  That horses bad luck put me off of trying it again for along time.  Lucky if you hit a year that is dry and the boggs are hardpacked dirt.

lived instead of the ones who died.

Arabian Saddle Company's (ASC) truck and trailer, along with their entire show stock were stolen from the parking lot of the Extended Stay Hotel on Saturday night after packing up from U.S. Nationals in Tulsa, Okla. The goods alone are worth several hundred thousand dollars. If you or someone you know is offered a significantly reduced price on any of ASC's products, or you see their products advertised anywhere (ebay, local retail store, etc.), other than their official website or from an authorized dealer, please contact the Tulsa Police Department 918-596-COPS (2677) immediately.

This was to be our 4th attempt at a 100 (we rider optioned on our first attempt
at Bluebonnet in 2008 after 65 miles). We completed the FITS 100 in March where
Expresso earned his Certificate of Capability (COC) and more recently the 100 at
Unicorn in early September. That latest attempt wasn't very pretty as I crapped
out about mile 50 (was coming down sick and didn't realize it). Anyway, I drove
up with the 3 horses and a dog, Jamie, on Saturday before the ride. I wanted to
get a good camping spot and get rested and prepared before the ride. The horses
had good sized pens and I was to pick Kim up on Monday about noon. He would be
my crew. Well, the weather in Houston turned so awful that his flight was
cancelled. He did manage to get the last seat on a flight that would be
arriving mid-afternoon. Well, that was not to be – it got delayed – which meant
I picked him up and missed the ride briefing. I pretty much had everything
prepared before I left to pick him up, so we got the last few things handled and
went to bed. But the whole flight delay thing pretty much rattled me.

Now, I had only ridden Expresso twice since his last 100. But not to worry, I
also swim the horses once a week so he was rested and MORE than ready. He
looked awesome and was feeling like a million bucks when I took a short (10
mile) ride on Sunday. We just zoomed along on one of the more technical trails
at LCB, the blue trail.

We started out last (22 starters, I think). He got in his groove pretty quickly
which means his big 10-12 mph trot. We did the first loop (pink – 16 miles) so
quickly we came in before Kim expected us so lost some time getting organized.
He vetted through just fine and off we went after our 30 minute hold. Next was
the white loop, 18 miles. It was much more technical, twisty turny, ups and
downs, and felt really LONG. A 45 minute hold and off we went again. Next was
the yellow/orange loop, 16 miles. Done easily and then an hour hold. Expresso
was happy and eating and drinking and peeing and pooping – all the things we
like!! Next was the white loop again, then a 45 minute hold. And finally, the
last 2 loops, pink again with a 30 minute hold between. We rode the last loop
in the dark and he was finding trail just fine but I was not as confident as I
should have been in the dark, so I slowed him down. Also, there is a really
crummy section of trail with lots of cedar trees and lots of face slappers. It
was here that Darolyn Butler passed us so we just tucked in behind her gray
horse's butt and motored on in. Kim was waiting for us at the finish line which
was at least a quarter of a mile from camp. What a nice site – the finish line
and Kim!! We walked on into camp and Expresso pulsed right down. I trotted him
out for the last time that day, and we heard that most wonderful word:
COMPLETE!! Yahoo!!! I hugged the vet, I hugged Kim, and I hugged Expresso.

Really, it was a pretty uneventful ride. No glitches, no problems, just
Expresso cruising along enjoying himself. We had a ride time of 9:53 and placed
7th which is pretty darned respectable. We had never ridden LCB before. I
still have not asked Expresso for speed. I pretty much have to rate him back
but he is very compliant with that and easy to ride. It has taken us years to
get here. He is a delight to ride and easy on me which I certainly needed as
there was lots more miles of trail to come for me in the next 3 days. With the
late start (7:15 am), we finished about 10:50 pm which meant I didn't have much
time to rest for our next adventure the next day, the CTR. But what-the-heck, I
always say I can rest when I'm dead. I would just have to cowboy up and ride,
which I did, completing the CTR on Carmaleata and then the 50 on Seranata. We
got three out of three completions (luck was on our side), and more importantly,
we came home with three sound horses.

I would say it was a VERY good week!!!

Super congrats on your completion in Oklahoma. I've ridden a 50 on those trails and I know they're NOT easy. i had plenty of battle wounds after my ride.

I have a question about speed. As I have done mostly turtle 50s and one mid-pack 50 and a top 10 to 15 25/30 here or there... I don't have a concept of what it's like to fly on a trail for a full 50 or anything longer. Altho I'm hoping to get there as I gain more confidence in my horse.

For your time you said 9:53 ... and then you added that "have not asked Expresso for speed" ... 9:53 for 100 miles? which means you are averaging about 10 mph for the entire ride. So speed would mean you avg 12 mph or higher? Like alot of galloping? And 10 mph means a rider never or hardly ever downs for terrain, water on trail, horse eating on trail I'm assuming? No pausing. Or if you do pause, make up for it by galloping or super fast trotting? You must have to fly while on the trail and do everything else in camp....

PS. I must say it sure seems to me to be an amazing effort you've put in! And all those other miles as well. Congrats again.

Thanks for the congrats. I had never ridden LCB before and knew that some work
had been done on the trails but there were still an awful lot of knee-knockers
as the bruises on my knees are still quite visible (and painful). And I wasn't
the only one who had torn riding tights.....

Now, I have to say a big YIKES!! I got the unofficial AERC ride results this
morning and need to make a BIG correction as I reported our ride time on the 100
wrong. It was not 9:53, it was 11:53. That's a pretty big difference!! I can
only say that my mind was mush at awards and I thought that's what they said
(guess my hearing wasn't good either). And then I never did calculate our ride
time (never found the energy or time to do it) and I found that with very little
sleep my mind was pretty much gone when it came to doing anything like math
anyway. So, I got the unofficial ride results this morning and saw the error of
my ways.....

I was also confused as to what our placings were. We DID place 7th overall (that
was in the AERC ride - it was dual sanctioned) and Expresso was 6th in the AHA
Purebred Arab ride. Awards were very strange. They didn't tell you what your
AERC placing was so I was telling family and friends that Expresso was 6th.
Well, what was reported on Ridecamp was that we were 7th. A friend told me we
were 7th and I just scratched my head and didn't try and contemplate it further
as my brain cells were not functioning properly on a few hours sleep.

As for Seranata, she DID place 15th in the AHA Purebred 50, and 21st overall.
We were told we were 21st when we crossed the finish line and my foggy mind just
thought that there were 6 pulls at the finish line when they announced at awards
that she was 15th. I have now proven that sleep deprivation does weird things to
your mind. It took me a good 3 days to get out of my "fog". [LOL] It's a good
thing I didn't have to drive us home!!

Now, to answer your question about speed. Expresso's "cruising" speed continues
to increase. He can comfortably do a 12 mph trot without exerting undue effort.
I'll let him do that if trail conditions are good. We generally just keep it in
a 10+ mph trot for most of the ride. If everything is going right, I like to do
negative splits, so on the later loops I'll allow him to go faster and let him
canter. He pretty much will rate himself on the later loops - cantering the
good spots and slowing down to a trot on turns/ups/downs/wet areas. Expresso is
a very "forward" horse but he's always been this way. As a 4 year old all I
allowed him to do was walk since all he wanted to do was go fast, but I digress.
I don't let any of my horses dilly-dally at water stops. I've taught them to
drink when offered and then we get on down the trail if they are not interested.
With eating, it's grab and go - that means little to no stopping - he just
reaches down and snatches a big bite. And personally, I DO like short loops so
you can just do everything at the holds. But we live near Houston so for the
hot rides we do stop a lot to sponge but then we ratchet the speed back up to
offset the slowdown.

I know the weak link in our team of two is me. I've ridden in the dark several
times but now that I think back, I was pretty familiar with the trails. I
wasn't as comfortable at LCB and now I know I need to just trust him and let him
just go. It always amazes me at how comfortably a horse can negotiate a trail
in the dark, and how conservative *I* can get in the dark.

Our next ride is Goethe (the 100) so once Expresso's rested from LCB, we WILL be
working on serious speed/sprints. We've already adjusted our swim sessions to
more laps at a faster pace since our plan is more speed at Goethe. And I think
that over time the swimming has contributed a lot to his bigger stride and
faster trot. Now, we've had our share of "bumps" in the road (like dealing with
ulcers amongst other things). I certainly don't know all the answers and the
questions keep changing anyway. With each and every ride there's always
something else to figure out.....

Cindy

That's not right, we did the 75 at Goethe.

At FITS I rode the 50 on Friday and the 100 on Sunday. Too many rides to
remember.....

whatever the ride times and mph, still great accomplishment.I had a chance this weekend to try the "don't dally" and keep going attitude on the second loop of our 25 mile LD. I chose the 25 because there is alot of sand at Road Warrier in Athens, TX and my horse isn't ready for a sandy 50. The first loop we started out 15 minutes behind everyone, walked for 5 minutes or so. then slow trot. one person passed us and put him into his "race brain" so i wouldn't let him go very fast as he was too nervous, pulling.

Finally after 5 miles, much better, but pretty technical trail and lots of sand. I think it took us about 1 1/2 hr or 5 to 5.5 mph pace for that first 15 miles. I was being conservative. Horse wasn't drinking or eating well, either, so another reason not to push.

then the second loop was a blast. had the horse w/ mind and body. Left camp at a canter and hardly ever slowed down. he ate and drank. did that 10 miles in just over an hour! woo hoo. I had fun passing people, one after the other. that's what I like about negative splits. horse came win all As except for gut sounds. probably because he was too nervous that first loop to eat real well.

next up a  50 at thanksgiving.
see ya'll
