Re: [new100milers] Drinking Water//Hyponatremia

There is a condition called “hyponatremia” (low salt) that comes from drinking too much water without having enough electrolytes. This condition usually develops over several days, but has also been seen in fraternity hazings where water is force fed and rarely in marathon runners*. I think it is virtually impossible to become hyponatremic at a ride because presumably we are eating food and not just drinking plain water. (I find I cannot drink plain water at all. I drink dilute, not-from-concentrate unsweetened grapefruit juice—seems to have just the right amts of electrolytes and natural fruit sugar.)

*Here is an article that refers to a case of hyponatremia in the 2002 Boston Marathon: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/6/6_1/1179.shtml

But the marathon is a 2-hr, constant motion event in which no one eats. A 100 mi ride is a 10-24 hr event in which people eat and drink (more than water, hopefully!) all day.

Just wanted to throw a quick reminder about not OVER hydrating either....(can't remember the word, or how to spell it).  I hear about it all the time during marathons, but rarely, if ever doing endurance (probably because it's not common).  Use common sense - I'm sure that there are people that scoff at this, but it's a real concern at races (not horse ones, foot ones) that have water stops every couple of miles.  Probably not as common in endurance because we carry our own water and can't carry a tremendous amount.  Some thing to keep in mind though if you start to get in distress but the weather is cool and you think "but I've been drinking tons of water!!!!"....

I have to force myself to eat the right foods OFTEN for me and drink OFTEN. Since I am never hungry and seldom thirsty this advice has got me through and I have not had any trouble with hydration or that running out of fuel thing.
Just finished Sunrivers 100 a couple weeks ago where I rode with Max Merlich and his pinto mule Junior who are preparing for Tevis this year. We came in 15 1/2 hours on that hundred and were 9th and 10th place. It was like we were on an all day picnic we had FUN!
I second your CREW is your most valuable asset. Helps to have one you do not dare back sass too since I can get alittle cranky if things are not going my way.
