East End Volleyball has a special ticket discount offer for all EEVB league players for the upcoming

AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour at Coney Island

July 2-5

Thursday and Friday are free for all fans

EEVB has tickets for the Saturday and Sunday sessions at $8/ticket. These tickets are only available for EEVB league players. We will be selling them next week at the following leagues:

Cedar Beach: Monday thru Thursday

Long Beach: Wednesday

If you want tickets and cannot be at one of those league nights contact me and we will try to work out another arrangement.

These tickets do not have any service fee either so it is the best bargain around for AVP Brooklyn  tickets

Come and see the top beach volleyball players in the US compete for $240,000 prize money. Many of the players have competed in EEVB tournaments on their way up to the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour. At last week’s Ocean City Open over 33 players in the main draw had one at least 1 EEVB tournament.

You had to become an AVPNext member to play in the league. So why not come down to Coney Island July 2-5 and see what the AVP is all about.

I will be there in case you have any questions about the event. See you on the beach next week for tickets.

Subject: [Eevb-li] Yes we are playing tonight and every night this summer

Yes we are playing tonight at Cedar and probably every other night this summer. We have not canceled a night yet and you know how much rain we have had on LI in June. We only cancel if the radar map shows that it will be raining at the league site between 6 pm and sunset. You can usually tell this by looking a the radar map on Weather.com or the Weather Channel or a similar weather page. Do not listen to the weather men or read the reports, They are for a wide area across the NYC metropolitan region and so must be very vague. Look at the radar map and watch the movement of the rain.

For those of you who missed the rain policy in the last email sent out a month ago, here it is again:

  1. Rain: In case of cancellation by rain we will post a message on the answering machine at 631-728-0397 after 4 pm if the league is cancelled. We will also send an email announcement once it is cancelled so be sure to get on the EEVB LI email list. If you hear a normal message listing all upcoming events, then the league is on. If the league is cancelled it will be listed first on the message. We will also try to post cancellations on the web site and send email notices when possible. We make our decisions based on the radar map on the Weather Channel and not on anything written or broadcast elsewhere. Most of the time when the weather is bad in the afternoon it will clear up by the 6 pm starting time. Rainouts are unusual.
PLEASE NOTE THAT WE WILL NOT MAKE PLAYERS COMPETE IN UNSAFE CONDITIONS. ANY TEAM CAN STOP PLAY AT ANYTIME IF THEY FEEL CONDITIONS ARE UNSAFE. We treat players as adults who are capable of making a decision about whether they think it is safe to play or if conditions call for suspending play.

You can find this policy and a lot of answers to your questions in the league manual which is available online at www.eevb.net/leaguemanual.pdf

We clould have easily cancelled a numbe rof night s and many of you would be comalining (rightfully so) about the cancellations. EEVB will error on the side of palhying. If you think it is too bad don’t come. But we expect to play except in the worst of conditions. And we have added an email alert to our rain procedures which will only be sent out if we cancel.

It has come up a few times this year so we are clarifying a rule:

The ball must be clearly tossed before serving.

This means that you cannot hold the ball in your hand and then serve the ball out of your hand, sort of like hitting a golf ball off a tee. This almost always only happens on an underhand serve. The reason for the rule is to stop a talented player from putting spin on a ball.

Please contact me if you have any questions about this rule.

Olympic Gold Medalist and the nation's #1 skill instructor, Pat Powers will be coming to Long Island, NY in June to present his highly successful volleyball skills clinic.

EEVB highly recommends this clinic for those players who want to improve their skill level

Where:                  Bethpage MultiSport

When:                   Saturday & Sunday, June 27-28, 9am-4pm on

Saturday & 9am-2pm on Sunday

Ages:                   Girls & Boys ages 12-18 & Adults

Registration fee:       $150

Experience:                    Novice through advanced.  Players are

divided up on three courts one hour into the event. Generally speaking, we have one court of 12-13 year olds (novice), one court of

14-16 year olds

and one court of advanced girls, boys and adults.

Why are these clinics the best?  The "over-correction" learning method combined with "Survivor" has the advantage of skill development while you are playing.  These advanced skills are downloaded into the motor memory through massive repetition while the player is competing in a non-intimidating environment.  Note: This clinic is not about competition.  It is about skill development.

******We have about 25 spots left for these events*****************

WHAT IS COVERED IN THE CLINIC

** Learn the mechanics of a perfect arm swing.

** Learn how to control the ball, control power and be quicker with one simple move while underhand passing.

** Setters: Learn what to look at and how to make your hitters better.

** Defensive players: Learn what NOT to look at when you play defense.

** Peripheral vision is a must in all sports!  Learn how we use it in volleyball.

** Learn four simple rules of communication that teach you how to think three seconds ahead and make the players around you better.

** And Much More.............

Most teams have been able to follow the registration procedure and get their team registered and on the schedule for the first night. Thanks to those teams and their captains.

About 10% are finding varying reasons for not completing the process. I have found in the past that teams that keep delaying registration, payments and getting AVPNext #s are the teams that either drop out or even do not show up the first night, or drop out after a week or two and also have high forfeit rates. No one likes it when you come ready to play and the teams you are scheduled to play do not show up.

So EEVB has instituted a clear step by step registration procedure this year and it is working great. The procedure is online at www.eevb.net/LeagueRegister.htm.  At Long Beach almost every team showed up and was able to go straight to their court to get started. The only teams that were supposed to show up and did not did so because the weather was questionable.

Of the teams that had pre-registered and did not pay or send in a roster and whom we left off the schedule, 75% of them did not show up, These teams would have messed up the schedule for  teams that had followed the procedure.

Therefore we will continue to follow the simple registration procedure. If your team is not on the schedule you need to finish the procedure which is very simple:

1.       Send in a roster

2.       Pay the entry fee

3.       Send in the AVPNext #s

Any team not on the schedule this week will have to send in a roster and show an effort to get most of the AVPNext #s. We will accept payment on the beach as long as it is a check or money order which you place in an envelope, write your name on the front and hand to us at check in. No team will be on the schedule the 2nd week that does not have all AVPNext #s and payments finished.

The teams that have done everything correctly will be able to come to the beach and go straight to their court to start playing. Teams that are not finished can finish at the beach as described above and then will be assigned to courts. So you will be able to play but your start time/playing time will be delayed as we handle these late registrations.

Thanks again to those teams that are done registering. We expect a full and fun start up week. See you on the beach.

EEVB is running the only AVP Young Guns Tournament in the Northeast this upcoming weekend in Pt Pleasant, NJ

It offers $5,000 prize money for both the Men’s and Women’s Open divisions.

If players want to see events like this keep coming to the northeast they need to support this event. We need a minimum of 16 women’s teams and 24 men’s teams in order for the respective divisions to count towards AVP Qualifying points and the full prize money purse.

Registration ends at 6 pm Wednesday night. All teams must also pre-pay.

This is a good chance for you to compete against the strongest filed on the East Coast this year to see where you fit in.

I have an opportunity for a AA team to play for free if they can help with either set up on Friday or breakdown on Sunday.

PLEASE SUPPORT THIS EVENT BY GETTING IN YOUR REGSITRATION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Thanks.

The online standings page is up to date and shows the status of each team’s registration process. For those of you who are completely done, THANKS.

Those teams that are not finished need to do so right away in order to be on the schedule that will be posted online Monday afternoon. The link for each night can be found at: http://www.eevb.net/Cedarlg.htm .

·         The standings page is online at http://www.eevb.net/Cedarlg.htm . Click the night you are playing to see your current registration status and your results during the season.

·         Please check to see that you are listed and are in the proper divisions and night

·         If you have 3 yellow columns to the left of your name you are completely registered

·         If a column is not yellow it means we do not have everything for your registration. Don’t panic if you think have already done everything. Just send in an email telling me what is wrong with my records.

·         Any team that has not done anything as indicated by all red in the 3 columns will be removed from the standings on Monday. In the past we have had teams register, not pay or send in a roster  and then just not show up which may have cost a team a spot and causing confusion on the first night. We are now assuming that any team with all red is such a team.

·         EEVB will be in Long Beach all weekend running a tournament in case you want to drop off a payment

·         If you have not mailed a check yet you can guarantee payment is received by going to http://www.active.com/myevent/ed_events.cfm?CHECKSSO=0&USER_ID=3256574

·         The AVPNext memberships can be done easily online in less than 5 minutes per player at https://secure1.webconnex.com/avpnext

·         Also some teams in red will be teams that had 2 players both sign up the same team. Please check to make sure your team is only listed once.

·         NO TEAM WILL BE PUT ON THE SCHEDULE UNTIL ALL 3 COLUMS ARE YELLOW INDICATING A COMPLETED REGSITRATION. We will not accept payments or AVPNext registrations on the beach because there will be too much to do making sure that all of the teams that followed the registration procedure get placed properly on courts.

  1. Rain: In case of cancellation by rain we will post a message on the answering machine at 631-728-0397 after 4 pm if the league is cancelled.

This is from the league manual, which all players should read.

The schedules for the first week of play in the Long Beach Leagues are now posted at:

·         Tuesday night: www.eevb.net/LBWedSchedule.htm

·         Wednesday night: www.eevb.net/LBWedSchedule.htm

Any team not listed on the schedule has not completed the registration procedure. They are also listed as OFF in the standings page: www.eevb.net/LongBeach09.htm

Note: By making sure that everyone has completely registered we found 6 different teams that had initially registered yet never sent in any further registration info and have since dropped out or turned out to be double registrations. In past years this would have resulted in nets with only 2 teams on the court and less playing time on the first night for the teams that registered correctly. We appreciate all team that have registered correctly and thank them for making the first night schedule run smoothly.

VERY IMPORTANT: No alcoholic beverages are allowed on the beach in Long Beach

·         The city has hired extra police to check coolers and bags as players enter the beach

·         They have also hired undercover agents and a person to video tape any alcoholic use

·         Please respect the City’s right to ask that players not bring alcohol to their beach

Additional League Info:

1.       All players should read the league manual online at www.eevb.net/leaguemanual.pdf which has league procedures and rules

2.       A rule that needs to be highlighted at the start of the year and that has been added on the schedule sheet: Players MAY NOT run onto another court, even after playing the ball. If this does happen the ball is out and a point goes to the other team. This is a safety issue and needs to be enforced.

3.       LAST LOSIGN TEAM ON A COUT AT THE END OF THE NIGHT HAS TO ROLL UP AND BRING IN THE BOUNDARY ROPE.

4.       The league starts at 6pm. We realize that players are coming from work and in rush hour traffic. Procedures for starting the night are:

a.       1st players to arrive should spread out the boundary lines

b.      The first two teams to arrive should start playing

c.       The 3rd team then plays the winner of the first game. Follow that schedule the remainder of the night

d.      If there are not 2 complete teams there at 6:30 the first 2 teams on the schedule must start playing even if they do not have a full team

e.      You can play with a few as 2 players in order to avoid a forfeit.

5.       The after play buffets will be at either The Inn, Minnesota’s or The Saloon. The schedule is posted online. The buffets will come out at 9:30 in the beginning of the year since games will not end until close to 9 pm. Be sure to come out every week after play to socialize with other league players.

We hope you enjoy the season.

Please note that EEVB’s leagues start in 2 weeks at Long Beach and 3 weeks at Cedar Beach. Here is some info that you will need.

A league manual with procedures, rules and other info is available online at www.eevb.net/leaguemanual.pdf. Please read it. You will find answers to most of your questions here. If there is something not answered in the manual please let me know so that it can be added.

League standings all season long  and schedules are online at:

·         Long Beach: www.eevb.net/longbeachlg.htm.

·         Cedar Beach: www.eevb.net/Cedarlg.htm

·         All pre-registered teams are listed on the standings page including the status of your registration.

·         If your registration is not correct please send me an email saying what is missing. I am doing all of this to make sure that all problems are handled before the first night. So if there is an error, don’t panic, just send an email pointing out what the problem is.

·         Please check your standings page weekly and let us know if there are any errors. The standings should be updated by the weekend and new schedules will be posted by noon on Monday

·         SCHEDULES: Will be updated and posted online every week by Noon on Monday

·         LEAGUE DAY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.       Each team should arrive at their court as close to 6 pm as possible.

2.       The first players there should lay out the boundary lines so that play can start as soon as the teams arrive.

3.       There are 3 teams assigned to a net each night. The first 2 teams that arrive should start playing. Mark the results and go down the schedule from that point on. Play until the sun sets or until you play all games on the schedule. If 2 complete teams are not ready by 6:30, then the 1st 2 teams on the schedule must start playing regardless of how many players they have. Teams not ready at 6:30 pm will lose 1 point/minute.

4.       At the end of the night the winning team of the last game brings the clipboard back to the check in area.

5.       The last losing team each night winds up the boundary rope using the rope winder and brings it back to the check in area.

6.       PLEASE CHECK YOUR RESULTS AT THE END OF THE NIGHT BEFORE YOU LEAVE.

·         The result sheet is the only way we know what happened on the court. Please be accurate recording results

·         If you did not play a game please be sure to cross it out so that someone else does not accidentally mark down a result. Results are posted weekly on the standings page

7.       Go to the player’s party. The schedule for Long Beach is posted online. The Cedar Beach party is always at the beach Hut.

8.       T-shirts will be given out in June .

·         LB Tuesday June 9 T-shirt night C6 & 4s                         Saloon

·         LB Tuesday June 16 T-shirt night R6                               Saloon

·         LB Wednesday June 10 T-shirt night C6 & 4s                        Saloon

·         LB Wednesday  June 17 T-shirt night R6                               Minnesota’s

·         Cedar Beach after play Thursday June 18 to Wednesday June 24

PLEASE NOTE THAT NO TEAM WILL BE PLACED ON THE SCHEDULE THE FIRST NIGHT WITH OUT THE FOLLOWING ITEMS CHECKED ON THE STANDINGS PAGE:

1.       PAID IN FULL

2.       Submitted a complete roster

3.       Sent in AVPNext #s for all players

Schedules will start being made up for Long Beach this week. Any team that has not finished their registration may have their spot given away to teams on the waiting lists.

Helpers are needed for the following league nights:

1.       Wednesday nights in Cedar Beach to handle league equipment.

2.       Wednesday at Cedar beach to supervise league and record results in standings file. You could play and still handle this job.

3.       Tuesday and Wednesday nights to help with equipment

4.       Helpers would need to be at the beach at 5 pm and stay about 45 minutes after the league ends. You would be able to play in the league and still do these jobs

3.       Sent in AVPNext 3s for all players

There is still plenty of time to get all of the above done but please do not wait until the last minute

Subject: Sign Up for 2009 Leagues

EEVB is now accepting registrations for the 2009 Beach Volleyball Season at Cedar Beach, Long Beach & E Quogue.

We expect a number of the leagues to fill up again this summer. PLEASE BE SURE TO GET YOUR REGISTRATION IN EARLY TO INSURE YOU CAN PLAY ON YOUR CHOSEN NIGHT

New for 2009:

1.       All players must be members of AVPNext, the grass roots organization of the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour. The $10 membership fee helps promote beach volleyball and helps with insurance coverage for the events. Everyone was supposed to be a member every year. We have gone on an honor system in the past trusting that players obtained their membership and emailed their # to us on the team roster. Some players have taken advantage of this so we will now require that every team have a completely filled out roster including AVPNext #s before they will be placed on the schedule

2.       Complete info to start the registration process is online at http://www.eevb.net/leagues.htm. Once teams are pre-registered they will be listed on the standings page for their respective leagues. New on the standings page will be 3 columns showing the following info:

a.       Entry fee payment

b.      Roster received

c.       All members have AVPNext #s.

d.      Teams will not be placed on the schedule until all 3 columns are checked.

3.       Teams that want to pay with credit cards can do so online through Active.com. EEVB will not be taking any credit card entries directly this year. Go to http://www.active.com/myevent/ed_events.cfm?CHECKSSO=0&USER_ID=3256574 and click on the league site that you want to start the registration

Juniors

1.       Info at http://www.eevb.net/juniors.htm

2.       Volunteers always needed to help EEVB’s superb Junior Coaching staff

All Leagues

1.       The roster for 2009 is again on an Excel Spreadsheet. If you have last year’s roster on the old form you can use that again this season. Let me know if you have trouble downloading the roster from the web site.

2.       The new roster has a spot for t-shirt size for each player. This will help speed up t-shirt distribution on t-shirt night. Remember that the best way to get your teams’ shirts is to have at least one person on your team to come to t-shirt night and pick up your team’s shirts.

3.       The league manual League Manual showing all league procedures is available online at http://www.eevb.net/pdfforms/leaguemanual.pdf . Please let us know if you have any questions so that we can include the answer in the league manual. League Manual showing all league procedures. Please let us know if you have any questions so that we can include the answer in the league manual.

4.       Coed 4s and 6-player teams will receive a $100 discount if you sign up for more than 1 night. The discount will come off the 2nd nights entry fee.

5.       Recording results: Last year we had more problems with disputed records than usual. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT IT IS THE WINNING CAPTAINS RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU CIRCLE YOUR WINS ON THE RESULTS SHEET. Also double check at the end of the night that the results are correct. If a game is not played due to darkness please put a line through the schedule to indicate that. If you make any changes please initial the change so that we know who to ask if it is questioned. Results are updated weekly so that you can check them. If you see a problem email us so that we can have the results sheet ready to review at the league site.

6.       All league players can join any EEVB weekend doubles tournament in the men’s, women’s or coed B division at $10/player, which is a significant discount from the normal league fee. We hope that a lot of you will try playing weekend doubles tournaments. We had a lot of player’s try it last season and they all seemed to have a lot of fun. Each paid entry fee includes a tournament t-shirt and admission to the Saturday evening player’s party including 2 complimentary beers and food. Not bad for $10.

7.       Finally: Please let me know if you have any suggestions or ideas to make the league more enjoyable for your team.

We are looking forward to a fun 2009 summer beach volleyball season.
