need of some volleyball player for THIS coming fall season. So if any
of you-all out there are interested and you have graduated HS be it

to talk to you and see if you can be a part of our program. I realize
this is last minute this is last minute in nature, but there may be
that someone looking to play on this level. (Which by the way is not

BELMAR OPEN WOMEN'S DIVISION: Top four seeds reach winners' bracket
semifinals

Rosenthal, Witt upset 1st seed
Published in the Asbury Park Press 07/10/05
BY BOB BADDERS
STAFF WRITER
http://www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050710/SPORTS/507100463/1002

BELMAR Southern California natives Sean Rosenthal and Larry Witt might not
be quite ready to call Belmar their home away from home but, judging by
their success on the Fifth Avenue beach, they probably do not complain about
the annual cross-country trip either.

Seeded eighth in the main draw of the Association of Volleyball
Professionals 2005 Nissan Series Belmar Open, Rosenthal and Witt outlasted
the top-seeded team of Dax Holdren and Jeff Nygaard 21-13, 19-21, 15-8 to
advance to today's winners' bracket semifinals.

"It's a great win for us and it definitely helps us heading into today,"
Witt said. "They weren't at 100 percent (after Holdren suffered a back
injury in the first game) but we'll take it."

The sands of Belmar have been kind to Rosenthal and Witt over the years. In
2003 the duo won their first AVP title at the Belmar Open and in 2004 they
were good enough to finish third.

"This is definitely a big stop for us," Witt said. "It's a real beach, not
some court set up in the middle of a city. It's a long trip but it's always
worth it."

Added Rosenthal: "It's a great beach and there is always a good crowd. It's
a fun place to play."

Aside from Rosenthal and Witt's upset win, each of the top four seeds
advanced in the winners' bracket. Stein Metzger and Jake Gibb, seeded No. 2,
defeated 10th-seeded Blain Blanton and Kevin Wong 21-17, 27-25. They will
face third-seeded Casey Jennings and Matt Fuerbringer, who needed three sets
over one hour and 10 minutes to beat sixth-seeded Todd Rogers and Sean
Scott. The other team to advance to the winners' bracket semifinals was Phil
Dalhausser and Nick Lucena, who beat Karch Kiraly and Adam Jewell in one of
the day's most exciting matches, 21-16, 19-21, 20-18. Dalhausser and Lucena
will square off against Rosenthal and Witt today.

"We've played them (Kiraly and Jewell) twice before and we handled them
pretty well," Dalhausser said. "We match up nice against them and we were
playing great until 13-8 in the second but we ended up blowing it. I guess
we like the drama."

In the women's bracket, No. 1 seeds Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh
regrouped after losing the first game to beat Tracy and Katie Lindquist
18-21, 21-19, 15-6. The rest of the top four seeds also advanced in the
winners' bracket.

As far as local players go, no team consisting of area players was able to
win a match on Saturday. After taking one of the eight qualifying spots on
Friday, Bill Maik and Jeff Wentworth (Brielle) were downed by Holdren and
Nygaard and then eliminated by Scott Lane and Chad Mowrey. Jim Walls and
Brian Soldano (Belford section of Middletown) were also knocked out after
two matches, losing to No. 5 Jason Ring and Paul Baxter and then falling to
Ed Ratledge and Aaron Wachtfogel in an elimination match.

"Our first match took a lot out of us," Walls said. "When we got on the
court in the second match in was almost like we were mentally drained. The
jumped on us early and never really let us get out of the gates."

The article his wife dug up a few months ago contained a familiar refrain,
the one about how Karch Kiraly was somehow still able to play well on the
Association of Volleyball Professionals Tour despite his advanced age.

"That article was from nine years ago," Kiraly said before smiling.

Those predictions of Kiraly's demise all those years ago now have a special
place in the filing cabinet with the stories of former Red Sox general
manager Dan Duquette saying Roger Clemens was in the "twilight of his
career" back in 1996.

At 44 years old, Kiraly is a living legend in beach volleyball. Just last
year, he and former partner Mike Lambert won three AVP events and the
overall points title. He has won more than $3 million in his career and a
combined three Olympic gold medals between indoor and beach volleyball.

Now all anybody seems to want to know about is the end.

"That's been the storyline for the last nine years," he said after his final
match in the contenders' bracket on Saturday at the Nissan Series Belmar
Open. "Everyone wonders, "Could this be my last season?' "

One year ago at Belmar, Kiraly dislocated his shoulder, ended up playing the
rest of the AVP schedule with basically one good arm and still won the
points title with Lambert. He had surgery in September, which ended up being
more of a cause for optimism than any chance to reflect on whether or not it
was time to hang it up.

"I thought that if I could do it with no shoulder last year, then maybe
having surgery I could do better," he said. "It turns out we didn't."

The play of a recovering Kiraly and an out-of-sync Lambert resulted in
Lambert dumping him as his playing partner, which led Kiraly to seek out
current playing partner Adam Jewell, who had recently been dumped by his
partner.

"We're adjusting a little because we both played full-time defense last
year," Kiraly said. "We're both probably best off in that position, but
we're making it work."

When Kiraly was playing in his first open tournament, the 30-year-old Jewell
was busy celebrating his first birthday. When he won his first tournament,
Jewell was four years old.

In Belmar Karch is a fixture. He is Maximus in "Gladiator" he owns the
crowd. A large group of fans who had been at the beach for nearly 10 hours
was still hanging on every point about a half hour before the sun went down
on Saturday as Kiraly and Jewell staved off elimination with a thrilling
17-21, 21-19, 20-18 win over an elite team that featured Lambert.

Kiraly's sadistic workouts and supernatural feel for the game ensure that he
is not Joe Namath on the Rams, hanging on to the bitter end while everyone
can barely bring themselves to watch. He is still a threat to win any
tournament he enters.

"Conditioning is one of the things I have to do at this age," Kiraly said.
"I got to try to earn an advantage somehow, and I think I can in
conditioning. I'll never be the hardest hitter anymore or the highest
jumper."

"He's like a computer," said Phil Dalhausser, a 6-foot-9 blocking machine
who teamed with partner Nick Lucena to defeat Kiraly and Jewell in a
winners' bracket match earlier on Saturday.

"The way I look at it, he almost sees everything in slo-mo so he can react
to what's happening in an almost mechanical way. He's a machine, basically."

While he's often called the Michael Jordan of volleyball, he is not some
untouchable icon like Jordan has become. He is more human, signing
volleyballs with the sun going down in the distance, not surrounded by
bodyguards and a team of P.R. people shooing everyone away.

He is the greatest player of all time, but got dumped by his playing partner
and still did not derive any special pleasure in beating Lambert on
Saturday. Imagine Jordan getting dropped by the Bulls when he was still at
the top of his game. Do you think maybe he would hold a grudge or 12?

"I have no hard feelings toward Mike," Kiraly said. "He's one of the nicest
guys on the tour. He's great for the tour and great for the sport."

But he's still not the greatest, which makes you wonder if Kiraly has ever
fully reflected on everything he has accomplished.

"I'll probably do that when I'm done," he said.

Check back with him in nine years.

Kiraly's career has survived sands of time

Karch Kiraly's wife was going through some newspaper clippings recently when
she found one about her husband that called it "amazing" he was still
playing so well at his age.

It was written nine years ago.

It could have been written yesterday.

Kiraly is 44 now, the oldest player on the Association of Professional
Volleyball Tour. The guy who almost single-handedly made beach volleyball an
Olympic sport still enjoys going to the "office" and brings his remarkable
legacy to the Jersey Shore this weekend for the Belmar Open.

Was it really more than 25 years ago that he won three NCAA championships
with UCLA? Has it really been more than 20 years since he won his first
indoor Olympic gold medal? Almost 10 years since his gold medal in beach
volleyball in the Atlanta Games?

Can it be Kiraly is now the father of two teenage sons who are launching
their own volleyball careers?

"I want to see how far I can push it," Kiraly said. "It's hard to give a
career like this up. When I tell my wife, 'I'm going to the office,' it's
the beach. But I'm also looking to see how late is too late, how old is too
old."

For the past eight years, he has hinted at retirement but keeps coming back
-- despite three shoulder surgeries, a recent change in playing partners and
not being the biggest, strongest, quickest player on the beach anymore. And
despite, well, his age.

The when-to-hang-it-up question eventually nags all superstars, but Kiraly
-- still drawing crowds -- doesn't seem ready to answer it yet. What he
lacks in speed, he replaces with savvy. The young stars of the Tour
understand.

"He's going to go out on his own terms. He's a stud and he deserves to play
as long as he wants to play," said Kerri Walsh, 26.

"It would have been easy for him to quit a long time ago, but he has that
desire and heart," Misty May, another competitor who grew up watching Kiraly
dominate on the beaches of California, "He's a competitor."

Kiraly has won three gold medals and is the all-time pro beach volleyball
victories leader. He has been named the MVP of the AVP Tour six times, has
won more than $3 million and twice was named the "Best Player in the World."

Last year, Kiraly and Mike Lambert -- who is 10 years younger -- won four
tournaments and were named the APV's team of the year. But the two could not
duplicate that success this year.

At the first event of the season, Kiraly took an awkward swing and heard
some scary noises come out of his shoulder, which had undergone its third
surgery in the off-season. He thought he was done.

"I don't think I want it to end on an injury, but I know it's going to end,"
he said. "I've had a tremendous career, and if it ended tomorrow, I would
not be disappointed except that if it ended tomorrow, it would probably be
because of an injury."

Kiraly's career did not end that afternoon, but his partnership with Lambert
did. Fearing he was holding back the fourth-year player, Kiraly encouraged
Lambert to find a new partner, and the two parted after the Austin Open in
April.

When an MRI revealed no real damage to his shoulder, Kiraly jumped back into
competition. He will compete in the Belmar Open this weekend with new
partner Adam Jewell, 30, trying to improve on last weekend's 13th-place
finish at the Cincinnati Open.

Kiraly says playing with Lambert, Jewell and others who are nearly half his
age has made him appreciate the game even more. His favorite victory, he
insists, is not his first, nor any of his gold-medal triumphs. It came last
year in Las Vegas with Kiraly's shoulder in great pain.

"It's a lot more difficult to win at 44 than at 19 or 18," he said.

To help him continue to stay competitive, he has taken up a daily
conditioning program he describes as "45-minutes of hell."

"The day he retires we are going to lower the AVP flags to half-mast," AVP
commissioner Leonard Armato said. "He has meant more to the sport of beach
volleyball than anyone in history."

If not for Kiraly -- who kick-started the sport with his first Olympic gold
medal in 1984 -- there might not have been a new generation of stars. Today,
volleyball darling Misty May might be soccer darling Misty May; his former
partner Lambert -- who had a Kiraly poster on his wall when he was 14 --
might be former middle school volleyball star Mike Lambert; Karch Kiraly,
with a degree in pre-med biochemistry, might be Dr. Kiraly.

And beach volleyball might never have escaped the California borders.

"He's been the icon for so long that I couldn't imagine if he wasn't," May
said. "I think this sport would be missing out if there was no Karch. My
life would be missing out, everybody he's had an influence on or met at some
point would be missing out."

Kiraly, who was 6 when his father started teaching him the game, isn't so
quick to take credit for growing the sport over the past 25 years. Saying he
"helped put (the game) on the map," he credits the players in the 1950s and
1960s for getting it started, then the players in the 1970s for building on
that foundation. And he will never forget the 1984 Games.

"It all changed overnight when we won the gold medal in 1984 and I had the
opportunity to continue playing volleyball, and I could earn a living at
it," Kiraly said. "Because of that, I put my plans of becoming a doctor on
hold, and here I am still playing."

Amazing.

Dynamic duo
Walsh, May-Treanor carry torch for pro volleyball

NEW YORK As Kerri Walsh removed her sweat pants, revealing the skimpiest
uniform in all of sports, even the most detached of city dwellers couldn't
help but take notice of the beach volleyball court that had sprung up in the
heart of the concrete jungle on June 30. It was much the way Walsh and her
partner, Misty May-Treanor, caught the entire country's attention last
summer when NBC made these good-looking athletes with gold medal-ability the
centerpiece of their prime-time Olympic coverage from Athens.

Now, with their lives changed forever, the duo has emerged as the
standard-bearers for both women's beach volleyball and the entire AVP Tour,
once solely the domain of men. From a Super Bowl commercial featuring them
playing on an ice field in their bikinis, appearances on every major
interview show and a growing number of corporate endorsers looking to latch
onto their Southern California charm, May-Treanor and Walsh are a
sought-after commodity.

"I think they've handled their leadership role and their starring role
tremendously," said Karch Kiraly, a three-time Olympic champion who spent
nearly two decades occupying the spot May-Treanor and Walsh have now
inherited. "Look at them. It doesn't look like they need any help from me.
It's exciting to have two women who are such good people as the two biggest
stars in the sport right now."

After winning their second straight world championship, they had their
winning streak snapped at 50 matches on July 3 in the Cincinnati Open final
by Elaine Youngs and Rachel Wacholder. Now they lead the AVP Tour back to
the Shore area for the $175,000 Nissan Series Belmar Open, looking to begin
another run of success.

In an era where fans simply can't relate to most athletes, May-Treanor and
Walsh are a refreshing change, using their girl-next-door persona to help
lead the way for the next generation of young athletes.

Walsh, a four-time All-American at Stanford, earned the nickname "Six Feet
of Sunshine" because of her outgoing personality. Considered the best
women's volleyball player in the world right now, she will marry fellow
beach volleyballer Casey Jennings later this year.

May-Treanor was a volleyball prodigy who grew up on the beaches around Costa
Mesa, Calif. She has a degree in kinesiology from Long Beach State, the 1998
NCAA volleyball champion, she immediately rose to the top of the beach game
when she teamed with Holly McPeak, finishing fifth at the 2000 Olympics. She
married Florida Marlins catcher Matt Treanor late last year.

"I think people really want their kids to look up to people like Misty and
Kerri," AVP commissioner Leonard Armato said. "I think brands want to
associate themselves with athletes like that. It's important for us to have
players like Kerri and Misty at the forefront because of what they
represent.

"As educated, articulate athletes, they really are perfect symbols for the
AVP and what we represent: great competition and a terrific lifestyle."

None of this, however, would have been possible had May-Treanor and Walsh
not established themselves as two of the finest female athletes, digging and
spiking their way into the stratosphere of their sport. Their most recent
winning streak was a little more than halfway to the record winning streak
of 89 matches they set in 2003-04.

"It feels like we have lightning in a bottle," Walsh said. "I'm always busy.
The media attention has increased 10-fold since the Olympics. The sport is
growing and this is a really good time to be doing what we're doing. Misty
and I, with our success, have been put in front in terms of being
ambassadors for our sport and we're so proud to be in that spot because we
love our sport. And if we keep winning, which is always the goal, we'll do
it for a long time."

Added May-Treanor: "We really don't mind the weight of being in a leadership
role. We've had a lot of good training. Holly was my first partner and she
kind of led the charge for the women for a while. We're always around Karch,
so there have been a lot of great athletes we've been surrounded by. We're
honored to be in this position."

Last summer, May-Treanor was forced to skip Belmar due to an injury, and
made the decision to sit out with an eye toward being completely healthy for
the Olympics. Walsh picked up Jen Meredith as a partner and ended up
finishing second. This week they'll look to make up for the disappointment
from 2004 in Belmar.

"You always hate sitting out tournaments, especially one we enjoy playing in
as much as Belmar," May-Treanor said. "But last year there was a bigger goal
involved. And with the way we're playing right now, we're looking forward to
every weekend."

While teams generally try to serve away from Walsh, opponents tried a
different strategy in Cincinnati in the semifinals and final. Walsh appeared
to struggle with teams serving at her, so she can expect more of the same in
Belmar.

"I played two really terrible matches in a row, and that's never happened to
me before," Walsh said. "I'm disappointed, but I'm thrilled to be coming to
Belmar to make amends."
