The $1,200 Winningedgesports.com Pro/Am will be held at Smith Pt. Park in Shirley, NY. The main 2 courts will be on top of the dunes next to the concession stand. The remaining courts on the beach have been moved to the east end of the park in the same area as the 1999 tournaments.

The courts had to be moved to the western end for the June tournament to allow for additional beach space for beach goers after early season erosion. All of the beach is now in good condition which allowed for the beach courts to be moved back to the flat, wide eastern end of the park. Registration for all divisions will still be done near the concession stand.

Prizes at Smith Pt include:
Men's Open - $500 and 1 trip to the Gulfview Championships in Florida
Women's Open - $400 and 1 trip to the Gulfview Championships in Florida
Men's A - 1 trip to the Gulfview Championships in Florida
Women's A - 1 trip to the Gulfview Championships in Florida
Men's AA - $150 on Sunday
Coed Open - $150 on Sunday.

Subject: Jake Elliott leads East Coast teams in Belmar AVP
eevb@...
Send Email Send Email

The top East Coast performance at the Belmar AVP tournament was posted by Jake Elliott, sponsored by the Windjammer in Isle of Palms, SC and his partner, Riley Salmon. Elliott/Salmon qualified on Friday to make it into the main draw on Saturday. Additional East Coast results are posted at the end of this message.

Their 1st game was against Lee LeGrande (won the 1st tournament of the 2000 season with  Brett Doble in Delray Beach, FL) and lost 15-9 sending them to the consolation bracket.

In the consolation bracket they defeated the California duo Scott Friederichsen and Richard Boldt 15-3. Next was a relatively easy win over Scott Davenport and Chris Makos 15-3. The toughest match Saturday was against Reid Priddy and Brandon Taliaferro. With the 2 teams fighting hard throughout the match, Riley developed leg cramps while they were winning 12-10 and had to take a medical timeout. The medical staff worked on his legs with massage and Arctic Spray until the whistle blew and Riley had to get back on the court.

The 1st serve by Priddy/Taliaferro surprisingly went to Jake Elliott and not the cramped up Riley Salmon. Elliott put the ball away for the sideout. Priddy/Taliaferro scored one point to tighten the match up to 12-11. The teams traded sideouts and one point each making the score 14-12. Priddy/Taliaferro then sailed a ball outside the lines giving Elliott/Salmon a place on the schedule for Sunday and a guaranteed minimum 9th place finish. As soon as the ball hit the ground for the final point Riley broke into a sprint and ran through the crowd towards the water with everyone wondering what was wrong. Riley got to the fence surrounding the courts and then screamed and yelled as they had gone farther than any of the Friday qualifying teams and were now still alive for a Sunday rematch with LeGrande and Neto, the team that has sent them to the loser's bracket.

At 8:30 am on Sunday morning they were back on the court. Some aggressive playing early on gave Elliott/Salmon an early 3-1 lead. But LeGrande/Neto had played before on Sunday's and knew how to get their game in order even when there was not a crowd around to cheer on the player's. Working methodically on their sideout game, LeGrande/Neto regained the momentum and slowly added up the points. The teams switched at 4-4, then 8-5, before LeGrande/Neto scored the 3 points to make it 14-4. Elliott/Salmon tried to get a rally going, scoring their 5th point before LeGrande/Neto put the ball away to win 15-5 and end a great run for Jake Elliot and Riley Salmon.

It was a fun ride while it lasted and netted both players $1,000 each plus AVP points that will give them a better seed in the upcoming Virginia Beach tournament this weekend.

Additional East Coast team results :
NY's Evan Silberstein/Elvis Rodriguez lost their 1st round game on Saturday 15-11 to the #2 seed Eric Fonoimoana/Dain Blanton. Silberstein/Rodriguez had the lead 11-9 on a switch and were giving the #2 seeds a handful. especially helpful to Silberstein/Rodriguez was a boisterous crowd rooting on the local favorites. But in the end Fonoimoana/Blanton had the experience to deal with the adverse conditions and scored the final 6 points to win 15-11. Rodriguez/Silberstein finished 25th and took home $250 each.

NJ's Jon Barnes and Jon Rose lost 15-3 to Todd Rogers and Dax Holdren, then 15-5 to Devin Poolman and Alika Williams to finish 25th and take home $250 each.

The tournaments will be located on the AVP site ensuring a large spectator base and a means for the community to rally around the sport's future stars.

In a continued effort to bring the benefits of the sport of beach volleyball to the youth of America, the Sunkist AVP/AVA Youth Tour has also added free clinics every Friday prior to each event. Three of the AVP's top athletes, Lee LeGrande, David Swatik, and Albert Hannemann, will coach the skills clinic. Lee LeGrande is the first AVP 2000 tournament champion (Delray, FL) and AVP Rising Star, and David Swatik is the 1999 King of the Beach and AVP Triple Crown Champion. Each clinic participant will receive a sponsor goodie bag and will have the opportunity to get autographs and take pictures with the AVP athletes.

Volunteer opportunities including ball shaggers, umbrella holders, Sunkist tattooers, etc. are also available for kids on Saturday at the AVP event.          I would like to invite you to visit Smack
      Sportswear's totally redesigned website at
           www.smacksportswear.com.

Smack Sportswear was established in 1994 by beach purists who love nothing more than to play volleyball, surf, and hang with their buds on the So Cal sands.  We therefore have the ability to design stylish, functional, unique clothing from a participant's perspective.
We have spent the last 4 months creating a constantly changing site which allows enthusiasts from all over the world to view and purchase our "So. Cal inspired" apparel, interact with our pro athletes, and learn more about what's happening in the world of volleyball.
Tim Hovland tells it like noone else can in Hov's World, while the Players Corner allows you to ask questions of our pro athletes.
Our Monthly Specials and Discount Buys sections  offer off-price goods not sold in retail stores. If nothing there catches your eye, you may view our Summer 2000 line, then check the Dealers section to find a store in your area carrying our line.
The Team Apparel section displays our unique, stylish Y2K Collection, while the Model SearchSmack Contest, and Feature Articles will surely keep you coming back.  Lastly, the Promos section provides a list of sponsored events as well as photos from many of the wild events we run here in the South Bay.
Over the next few months, we will be adding new sections such as "Geet City", Event Results & Athlete Rankings, as well as a "Competition" line of apparel which we provide to Professional Volleyball, Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Hockey players. I hope you enjoy the site and look forward to your feedback.

* Note: Our shopping cart, which will allow you to purchase goods online, will be completed by 7/1/00.

Hey there :)
You guys looking for play in N. Jersey... Are you familiar with the JSVBA?
They play (mostly) in Point Pleasant, NJ (about 45 minutes south of Sandy
Hook). Many of the players (myself included) drive drive about 60 minutes
north (from S. Jersey) to participate.
Unless you are strictly looking for something farther north, give them a
look at http://members.aol.com/jsvba/index.htm.

Maybe I'll see you out there :)

KRIS
