This is Andrea Bird, Ralph Hebb's wife. I was thinking about buying Ralph some vintage uniform pants for his birthday tomorrow, and he had mentioned at one point that the same guy in Connecticut that makes the shirts also makes pants.
Could you send me the contact information for this person?
Thanks very much!

Developing a team depends on how far you want to get into this sport.
Finding teams to play in your area is not a problem. You are in a
hotbed of vintage clubs. Go to
http://www.newenglandvintagebaseball.com/
Other than finding players you will need;
A) Committed players to play often and willingness to travel a bit
(maybe an hour to an hour an a half at the most) if you want teams to
come to you.
B) Sponsors or a deep pocket book.
C) A descision of what style to focus on...overhand (1880s) or
underhand (1860s) or both.
Keep us up to date as to your progress.

Beaneater web site use this link now

Im trying to finalize everything for the Clinton All Star Game Saturday August 25th and was hoping to tie a few things up by the end of the week...
Teams Essex BBC- Lynn Live Oaks- Boston Beaneaters- Mudville BBC- Westfield Wheelmen- Meddowe BBC- Dirigo BBC- Waterbury Connors- NH Granite- Cornish Game Hens-Newtown Sandy Hooks 11 teams- Am I missing any?
Other things I need to know #1 Are you sending 1 guy or 2--- Depending on the numbers I may ask some teams to send three but I will have to wait and see. #2 Is your team planning on playing in both 61 and 86- just 61- or just 86
This is still open so if there are other teams out there who have interest in coming please let me know. It should be a lot of fun. Please let me know if you would like the flier that is being sent out about the game- Ill forward it to you.
Directions, team
break downs, etc and that will come next week once I figure some of that other stuff out.
This is a message I got from Kristen Sherman from Island Alliance. She is looking to put together some vintage base ball games for Labor Day weekend and I told her I would be happy to pass this along to all of the other teams in New England.Essex has played on GeorgesIsland several times in previous years and I must says it is a great place to play and I would jump at the chance to be part of this if we weren’t committed to a tournament in Roxbury, NY.GeorgesIsland is an old fort with a parade ground (no backstop) so it may be tough to do an 86 game out there, but we did play the Grays in an 84 game there so overhand is possible it may just be a little harder. Please respond to her and not the group if you are interested, I don’t have anything to do with this game I am simply passing this message along. If people do have questions on the set up of the grounds I can answer those questions for you though…

I apologize to those who get this 2 or 3 times, I just wanted to make sure everyone knew about it… I guess the all star game in Clinton will be the same format as last year- that was not how I was told it was going to be but I guess my opinion was left out of the discussion….. Let me know if you will be attending if you have not already done so.These are the teams I have already
Essex- Lynn- Boston Beaneaters- Mudville- Game Hens- Dirigo- Waterbury

Hi Brian,
Just wanted to give you an update on
what’s going on here in Clinton.
We are excited about the upcoming game and
tickets and posters are now on the streets. We decided to stick with the same
format as last year: Gates open at noon, 2 pm 1860’s and 4 pm 1880’s
style. We have also decided to have some fun things for kids to do, such
as a dunking booth this year, so there should be plenty for kids to do between
games too.
Do you think you can get the names of the
teams who are playing this year by the week of August 6?
Let me know if you have any questions or
thoughts.
Hey guys,
I am probably not an expert on this and I am sure some of my techniques
are wrong but I posted a slideshow on our web site on how to make a
1861 style lemon peel baseball. It may help some of you who want to
try. I thought I would mention that and also say we have a slideshow on
how we made a bat. The pictures of making a baseball will also be
posted in the photos section so people can get a closer look.

Subject: [nevbbl] New England Vintage Base Ball All Star Game
Hey guys,
I got a call from the people who put together the New England Vintage Base Ball All Star Game last year in Clinton and they are looking forward to doing it again this year- the date will be Saturday August 25th.
We will be playing three different games (depending on approval from their committee) 12pm- 1861 2pm- 1876 4pm 1886
I hope this doesn't offend anyone- I play 1880's more now then I do 1861 so don't yell at the messenger- but they felt that the 1861 game was faster paced and more enjoyable for the fans…. I told them that we weren't cutting out the 1880's game to have two 1861 games. I then thought that a middle ground would be why not have a 1861 game, a 1876 game, and a 1886 game….
They are looking to start the ball rolling so I need to know what teams are interested in attending. Right now lets say each team can send 2 players…
Let me know.

Hey guys,
This is a simplistic question but one I feel should be asked- Is
there still a league? I have my own thoughts on that and have heard
rumblings of things from others but I do not know for sure. Is there
still a Cherry Bat "championship"? Again I have my opinion on that
but am curious on how others think. I believe- but I could be wrong-
that these tournaments we are supposed to play (June 3rd Bristol,
July 15th Waterbury- August 19th Haverhill, MA ) help teams who
aren't going to play during the year play one another for the
league. Who is going to organize all that if this is the case? I
foresee headaches for the people/ person who is in charge of that
task. There are a lot of questions….
This is my stance- I don't see the need for an organized league or
a "champion". While it is fun to play for something I also think
that it takes something away from the fun part. If you have a
friendly rivalry with a team create your own championship or prize
and play for that. Melrose and Essex should play each year for the
Hot Dog championship…… It would be nice to play all of you guys but
with some teams playing in some tournaments and not others I think it
may become a burden on whoever is organizing these tournaments to
please everyone with the schedule. What happens if at the end of the
year Essex doesn't play Hartford and that one game is the deciding
factor for the championship. It will just frustrate people and in
the long run this is supposed to be fun. I don't know these are just
my thoughts. I am looking forward to seeing everyone in Bristol in a
few weeks….
These are just my thoughts….
Brian
All:
Here is the latest update regarding June 3:
A. I have to pass on what I think is an important message (and ask that you
pass it along to your teammates). Also, sorry in advance if this sounds
negative or blunt because, to the contrary, I think it will be a very fun time
on the 3rd. While we have been calling this a 'tournament' in our mind it is
not a "tournament" in the traditional sense. We will not be providing umpires
(we might have one). We will not be providing food or drink. There are no
prizes planned. There is no organization "behind" this event. We have no
medical staff or first aid available. Also, we have no insurance for this
event. You all know the risks inherent in playing vintage base ball - you could
get seriously injured or seriously injure someone else in playing this game. As
is customary with our regular 1 on 1 matches, you will be participating at your
own risk.
All we have done for this event is secure permission from the town of Bristol to
use two fields - that's it. So, this is just a regular game day - but we happen
to have enough room to play several games.
B. We have 2 fields, the Common and a field at Colt State Park. We will have
both fields set up with lines, but need someone to bring a plate and set of
bases for the field at Colt State Park. Anyone?
I am thinking of time slots starting at Noon, then around 2pm, then 4pm (but see
below). Also, if there are 2 undefeated teams, maybe they can play each other
at the end. Just an idea...
C. So far here is the IN / OUT list:
Bristol is IN for early start.
Waterbury is IN for the early start.
Essex in IN for early start.
Lynn is IN - late start preferred.
New London is IN - not sure of start time.
Melrose is IN - not sure of start time.
Dark Blues - not sure of status - G. Frank on radio silence.
So we have 6 teams IN. If the Dark Blues are IN, we have 7 teams, which totally
throws off the schedule and I have no idea ho we guarantee everyone 2 games in
the three time slots. So, we would have to expand to a 6pm time slot - or start
early, or find another field (which is possible). Or maybe some teams do not
have full nines and can combine. The magic number that works best is 6 teams.
Can you all estimate whether you will have full teams? Greg Frank - are you IN
or OUT (don't let this dissuade you, Greg, we can figure something out - the
days are long this time of year and expanded time or another field are
possibilities.
Thanks,
John

Subject: BRISTOL TOURNEY
All:
Please let me know ASAP who is coming to Bristol on June 3rd, for the first of
the 3 NEVBBL tournaments. We have two fields and need to start planning games.
We expect each team to play twice, against different opponents. We plan to start
the tourney at or near noon.
I need three bits of info from each team:
1. Are you coming?
2. At what time can you get to Bristol?
3. Is there any team you need to play in terms of the Cherry Bat requirements?
It is my understanding that the Cherry Bat will go to the team with the best
record after playing each NEVBBL team ONCE. The tourneys are supposed to help
facilitate these match ups. If there are teams that are looking to June 3rd as
a place to fulfill this requirement, please let me know. For example, the Blues
do not play Waterbury in any 'regular season' matches this year, so I intend to
match the Blues against Waterbury.
Thanks, your prompt response is appreciated.

Hey guys,
As some of you may or may not know next summer is the 150th
anniversary of the first New York style baseball game played in New
England. The game was held in 1858 on the Boston Common and pitted
the Tri Mountains of Boston against a club from Portland Maine. I
was thinking that it might be a nice idea to try to have a tournament
next summer in Boston to celebrate this event. I recently contacted
the Bostonian Society and they seem lukewarm on the idea because they
really don't understand what their part would be in putting this
together. Right now it's a concept that I have that would need to be
mapped out before I think they would sign off on it.
In saying that… Does anyone have any interest in helping me put all
of this together? If we can get this process moving now I think we
could have a very successful event next summer.
Let me know,
Brian
(PS- Sorry if you get this twice)
