Developing a team depends on how far you want to get into this sport.
Finding teams to play in your area is not a problem. You are in a
hotbed of vintage clubs. Go to
http://www.newenglandvintagebaseball.com/
Other than finding players you will need;
A) Committed players to play often and willingness to travel a bit
(maybe an hour to an hour an a half at the most) if you want teams to
come to you.
B) Sponsors or a deep pocket book.
C) A descision of what style to focus on...overhand (1880s) or
underhand (1860s) or both.
Keep us up to date as to your progress.

Im trying to finalize everything for the Clinton All Star Game Saturday August 25th and was hoping to tie a few things up by the end of the week...
Teams Essex BBC- Lynn Live Oaks- Boston Beaneaters- Mudville BBC- Westfield Wheelmen- Meddowe BBC- Dirigo BBC- Waterbury Connors- NH Granite- Cornish Game Hens-Newtown Sandy Hooks 11 teams- Am I missing any?
Other things I need to know #1 Are you sending 1 guy or 2--- Depending on the numbers I may ask some teams to send three but I will have to wait and see. #2 Is your team planning on playing in both 61 and 86- just 61- or just 86
This is still open so if there are other teams out there who have interest in coming please let me know. It should be a lot of fun. Please let me know if you would like the flier that is being sent out about the game- Ill forward it to you.
Directions, team
break downs, etc and that will come next week once I figure some of that other stuff out.
This is a message I got from Kristen Sherman from Island Alliance. She is looking to put together some vintage base ball games for Labor Day weekend and I told her I would be happy to pass this along to all of the other teams in New England.Essex has played on GeorgesIsland several times in previous years and I must says it is a great place to play and I would jump at the chance to be part of this if we weren’t committed to a tournament in Roxbury, NY.GeorgesIsland is an old fort with a parade ground (no backstop) so it may be tough to do an 86 game out there, but we did play the Grays in an 84 game there so overhand is possible it may just be a little harder. Please respond to her and not the group if you are interested, I don’t have anything to do with this game I am simply passing this message along. If people do have questions on the set up of the grounds I can answer those questions for you though…

I apologize to those who get this 2 or 3 times, I just wanted to make sure everyone knew about it… I guess the all star game in Clinton will be the same format as last year- that was not how I was told it was going to be but I guess my opinion was left out of the discussion….. Let me know if you will be attending if you have not already done so.These are the teams I have already
Essex- Lynn- Boston Beaneaters- Mudville- Game Hens- Dirigo- Waterbury

Hi Brian,
Just wanted to give you an update on
what’s going on here in Clinton.
We are excited about the upcoming game and
tickets and posters are now on the streets. We decided to stick with the same
format as last year: Gates open at noon, 2 pm 1860’s and 4 pm 1880’s
style. We have also decided to have some fun things for kids to do, such
as a dunking booth this year, so there should be plenty for kids to do between
games too.
Do you think you can get the names of the
teams who are playing this year by the week of August 6?
Let me know if you have any questions or
thoughts.
Hey guys,
I am probably not an expert on this and I am sure some of my techniques
are wrong but I posted a slideshow on our web site on how to make a
1861 style lemon peel baseball. It may help some of you who want to
try. I thought I would mention that and also say we have a slideshow on
how we made a bat. The pictures of making a baseball will also be
posted in the photos section so people can get a closer look.

Subject: [nevbbl] New England Vintage Base Ball All Star Game
Hey guys,
I got a call from the people who put together the New England Vintage Base Ball All Star Game last year in Clinton and they are looking forward to doing it again this year- the date will be Saturday August 25th.
We will be playing three different games (depending on approval from their committee) 12pm- 1861 2pm- 1876 4pm 1886
I hope this doesn't offend anyone- I play 1880's more now then I do 1861 so don't yell at the messenger- but they felt that the 1861 game was faster paced and more enjoyable for the fans…. I told them that we weren't cutting out the 1880's game to have two 1861 games. I then thought that a middle ground would be why not have a 1861 game, a 1876 game, and a 1886 game….
They are looking to start the ball rolling so I need to know what teams are interested in attending. Right now lets say each team can send 2 players…
Let me know.

Hey guys,
This is a simplistic question but one I feel should be asked- Is
there still a league? I have my own thoughts on that and have heard
rumblings of things from others but I do not know for sure. Is there
still a Cherry Bat "championship"? Again I have my opinion on that
but am curious on how others think. I believe- but I could be wrong-
that these tournaments we are supposed to play (June 3rd Bristol,
July 15th Waterbury- August 19th Haverhill, MA ) help teams who
aren't going to play during the year play one another for the
league. Who is going to organize all that if this is the case? I
foresee headaches for the people/ person who is in charge of that
task. There are a lot of questions….
This is my stance- I don't see the need for an organized league or
a "champion". While it is fun to play for something I also think
that it takes something away from the fun part. If you have a
friendly rivalry with a team create your own championship or prize
and play for that. Melrose and Essex should play each year for the
Hot Dog championship…… It would be nice to play all of you guys but
with some teams playing in some tournaments and not others I think it
may become a burden on whoever is organizing these tournaments to
please everyone with the schedule. What happens if at the end of the
year Essex doesn't play Hartford and that one game is the deciding
factor for the championship. It will just frustrate people and in
the long run this is supposed to be fun. I don't know these are just
my thoughts. I am looking forward to seeing everyone in Bristol in a
few weeks….
These are just my thoughts….
Brian
All:
Here is the latest update regarding June 3:
A. I have to pass on what I think is an important message (and ask that you
pass it along to your teammates). Also, sorry in advance if this sounds
negative or blunt because, to the contrary, I think it will be a very fun time
on the 3rd. While we have been calling this a 'tournament' in our mind it is
not a "tournament" in the traditional sense. We will not be providing umpires
(we might have one). We will not be providing food or drink. There are no
prizes planned. There is no organization "behind" this event. We have no
medical staff or first aid available. Also, we have no insurance for this
event. You all know the risks inherent in playing vintage base ball - you could
get seriously injured or seriously injure someone else in playing this game. As
is customary with our regular 1 on 1 matches, you will be participating at your
own risk.
All we have done for this event is secure permission from the town of Bristol to
use two fields - that's it. So, this is just a regular game day - but we happen
to have enough room to play several games.
B. We have 2 fields, the Common and a field at Colt State Park. We will have
both fields set up with lines, but need someone to bring a plate and set of
bases for the field at Colt State Park. Anyone?
I am thinking of time slots starting at Noon, then around 2pm, then 4pm (but see
below). Also, if there are 2 undefeated teams, maybe they can play each other
at the end. Just an idea...
C. So far here is the IN / OUT list:
Bristol is IN for early start.
Waterbury is IN for the early start.
Essex in IN for early start.
Lynn is IN - late start preferred.
New London is IN - not sure of start time.
Melrose is IN - not sure of start time.
Dark Blues - not sure of status - G. Frank on radio silence.
So we have 6 teams IN. If the Dark Blues are IN, we have 7 teams, which totally
throws off the schedule and I have no idea ho we guarantee everyone 2 games in
the three time slots. So, we would have to expand to a 6pm time slot - or start
early, or find another field (which is possible). Or maybe some teams do not
have full nines and can combine. The magic number that works best is 6 teams.
Can you all estimate whether you will have full teams? Greg Frank - are you IN
or OUT (don't let this dissuade you, Greg, we can figure something out - the
days are long this time of year and expanded time or another field are
possibilities.
Thanks,
John

Subject: BRISTOL TOURNEY
All:
Please let me know ASAP who is coming to Bristol on June 3rd, for the first of
the 3 NEVBBL tournaments. We have two fields and need to start planning games.
We expect each team to play twice, against different opponents. We plan to start
the tourney at or near noon.
I need three bits of info from each team:
1. Are you coming?
2. At what time can you get to Bristol?
3. Is there any team you need to play in terms of the Cherry Bat requirements?
It is my understanding that the Cherry Bat will go to the team with the best
record after playing each NEVBBL team ONCE. The tourneys are supposed to help
facilitate these match ups. If there are teams that are looking to June 3rd as
a place to fulfill this requirement, please let me know. For example, the Blues
do not play Waterbury in any 'regular season' matches this year, so I intend to
match the Blues against Waterbury.
Thanks, your prompt response is appreciated.

Hey guys,
As some of you may or may not know next summer is the 150th
anniversary of the first New York style baseball game played in New
England. The game was held in 1858 on the Boston Common and pitted
the Tri Mountains of Boston against a club from Portland Maine. I
was thinking that it might be a nice idea to try to have a tournament
next summer in Boston to celebrate this event. I recently contacted
the Bostonian Society and they seem lukewarm on the idea because they
really don't understand what their part would be in putting this
together. Right now it's a concept that I have that would need to be
mapped out before I think they would sign off on it.
In saying that… Does anyone have any interest in helping me put all
of this together? If we can get this process moving now I think we
could have a very successful event next summer.
Let me know,
Brian

The Essex Club is attempting something new this season and will attempt to start a women’s club (well hopefully two). This is a newsletter that the Essex National Heritage send out that mentions what we are doing (it is towards the bottom).
A "New View" in Washington Means New Direction for American Preservationists
Last November, I was honored to be elected to my sixth term in the United States House of Representatives by the people of the Massachusetts 6th Congressional District. The American people also spoke loudly for change and, last month, I joined others in a new majority Congress in immediately working to restore honor and integrity to the "people's House."
During this Congress, I will continue my work to pass important legislation that continues the federal government's commitment to the Essex National Heritage Area. Since its creation, the Essex National Heritage Commission (ENHC) has a clear record of supporting heritage preservation, trail development and other projects to protect and improve the natural and historic resources of our local communities. Additionally, the Essex National Heritage Area is a key component of our community, spurring tourism that helps our local businesses, and fostering education about our culture and history.
The coming year brings an opportunity for Congress to reaffirm its support for Essex National Heritage Area, a proven and successful entity. With Senators Kennedy and Kerry, I will work to help make that happen.
Commissioner Corner: Kathy Leahy, Mass Audubon Society
Kathy Leahy has served as an ENHC Commissioner since October, 2002. As Director of Massachusetts Audubon Society’s North Shore Advocacy Office, (MAS:NS) Kathy oversees a program to protect critical coastal habitats through an integrated program of identification of conservation threats, education and outreach, technical assistance, advocacy, and land protection. MAS:NS focuses its efforts on issues such as open space protection, land use planning, watershed and drinking water supply protection with a particular emphasis on coastal habitats.
The conservation successes resulting from the cooperative efforts that began when MAS:NS held the first Great Marsh Summit in 1996 have been remarkable. Conservation groups and government agencies have worked together to achieve significant milestones in land conservation, habitat restoration and protection of biodiversity in the Great Marsh region. One of the most exciting partnerships, the Great Marsh Coalition, set out to give the Great Marsh the recognition it deserves as a “coastal treasure in our backyard.” We’re all thrilled to see more and more people from the North Shore and beyond learning about, appreciating and finding ways to enjoy this truly magnificent natural area.
Two upcoming events that are open to the public and that will highlight the Coalition’s activities within the Great Marsh are featured below – the Great Marsh lecture and Book signing on Sunday, March 4 and the Great Marsh Symposium on Saturday, March 10. Click here for information about both events.
Partnership Grant Spotlight: The Courtyard at the Nock Rupert A. Nock Middle School, Newburyport
ENHC is proud to support the renovation of the central courtyard at the
Rupert A. Nock Middle School in Newburyport. The school is well on its way to converting an unusable central courtyard into a thriving, year-round outdoor classroom to be used for on-site field trips. The R.A.N. Courtyard Renovation Committee received a 2006 Partnership Grant (Interpretation) to complete Stage II of this project: the brickwork. Construction and bricklaying was complete in December, and the school is poised to create its Colonial Heritage and Great March gardens in new planting areas. The transformed courtyard features amphitheatre seating, handicapped accessible walkways, and a raised platform garden that provides access for handicapped students. This innovative project will bring the region’s environment into the middle school, expanding the school’s capacity to teach cultural and natural history and environmental stewardship.
ENHC will be accepting 2007 Partnership Grant applications through noon on March 1, 2007. Application guidelines, criteria, and forms are available online. Non-profit organizations and public entities that share the mission of ENHC are encouraged to apply. You are strongly encouraged to contact ENHC staff with questions as you prepare your organization's application.
Women and Base Ball
Women have been watching and playing base ball since the beginning of 19th century. Many early women base ball players were college students. All-girl schools provided women with opportunities to play the game without attracting too much attention. Beginning in the last quarter of the 19th century, however, the novelty of women playing the game attracted large crowds. Women's barnstorming teams became popular forms of entertainment in many areas. For more info on women’s baseball click here.
The Essex Base Ball Organization, a vintage base ball group made up of three teams playing a variety of rules from the 19th century, is gearing up for its sixth season and thinking of starting two women’s teams to round out the program. We will be recruiting players for the upcoming season. For more information please email Brian Sheehy, call 978-790-5707, or visit

National Heritage Area Highlight:South Carolina NHC
The South Carolina National Heritage Corridor extends 240 miles across South Carolina, stretching from the mountains of Oconee County, along the Savannah River, to the port city of Charleston. The 14 counties of the corridor offer a cross-section of the state's history, culture, and natural landscapes. The visitor will learn of rice and indigo, pirates and patriots, slaves and freemen, cotton fields and mill villages, swamps and waterfalls, railroads and backroads, soul food and "pig-pickin's," spirituals and bluegrass.
Traveling along the corridor, you will experience the history, nature, and lifestyles of the rural South. Two routes -- the
Discovery Route and the Nature Route -- run the entire length of the Heritage Corridor, connecting special places and creating one unfolding heritage tourism destination. Plan your vacation or day trip around one of these routes, and South Carolina's heritage will unfold before you.

Hello all,
I read the article today in the New London Day regarding the
upcoming 2007 vintage baseball season. I am new to a vintage baseball
league but look forward to learning more at the meeting. sounds like
alot of fun!!

Hey everyone,
I am looking to put together some games for Trails and Sails weekend,
an event that happens in Essex County, and am looking for some teams.
I thought the weekend was September 22nd and 23rd (and I have games
scheduled for that time) but it turns out to be the following weekend
of the 29th and 30th. Here is a link that explains what the weekend is
all about http://www.essexheritage.org/ts/#
Are there any teams interested in doing something for this weekend? I
know it is late in the season and guys start thinking about football.
It would have to depend on the response for what set of rules (I would
be open for one day of 1861 and the other 1886) or what day (one day or
two days). Let me know if there is any interest out there.

Huzzah! I remember seeing a reference, perhaps this one, on the subject of a dive some years ago.

Happened to come across this recently from "Old Boston Boys and the Games They Played" James D'Wolf Lovett, 1908, p. 153.
"Mr. Chandler [Moses E Chandler of the Tri-Mountains] also had the distinction of being the first ball player in New England who, when running the bases, made a "dive" for one of them. This happened in 1859 in Portland, Maine, in a match between the Tri-Mountains and Portlands, and the feat fairly astonished the natives, who at first roared with laughter, but Chandler scored the run [last 5 words in italics], and they then woke up to the fact that a large, new and valuable "wrinkle" had been handed out to them."
That supports the head first diving in the 1860s for sure. Good citation.

Hey everyone,
I dont want to start a huge discussion on this but I found this
email when I was going through one of my folders. It is very
interesting, I actually requested the book...
Brian
Happened to come across this recently from "Old Boston Boys and the
Games They Played" James D'Wolf Lovett, 1908, p. 153.
"Mr. Chandler [Moses E Chandler of the Tri-Mountains] also had the
distinction of being the first ball player in New England who, when
running the bases, made a "dive" for one of them. This happened in
1859
in Portland, Maine, in a match between the Tri-Mountains and
Portlands,
and the feat fairly astonished the natives, who at first roared with
laughter, but Chandler scored the run [last 5 words in italics], and
they then woke up to the fact that a large, new and
valuable "wrinkle"
had been handed out to them."

That was great, and a nice cameo for The Undertaker!

Thanks for the link. The Conan clip on that site is hilarious. Again, thanks for all your help. I'll keep you updated on my progress.

Hey Tony,
I wish I had more computer skills and was able to upload some of the video clips we have onto the computer but I am just not that talented. I have asked a guy on our team to try but the DVD I gave him has
been sitting at his house for a year now, I should see if the kids at school know how to do it...... Most of the stuff on the web is of 1886 rules. On the Newtown Sandy Hooks site there is a link to a trailer of a documentary MLB is putting together on vintage base ball. I would suggest also looking at 19cbb web site http://www.19cbaseball.com/legacy2.html . There are a few clips from Old Bethpage playing.
Hooking up with a historical society can be very helpful if they are willing to help.... Sometimes they are sometimes they arent.
As far as the NEVBBL goes there really isnt a league right now, there is a semblance of a league but not really and it only includes 6 or 7 teams. As a whole I think most of the teams in NE (close to 20) are looking to form an association which would be very loose and basically be a way to help educate, promote,
and foster vintage base ball in NE. Whatever we form would not keep standings or force teams to play X amount of games, etc, etc.

Hi guys. I'm in the process of forming the big club. I have been in contact with some of you via e-mail. I appreciate all the help and information I have received.
I'm working on a team name (I'm leaning towards the Peddlers - the town symbol is a picture of a Yankee Peddler) and trying to determine the types of uniforms we will wear. I hope to partner up with the Berlin Historical Society and add sponsors as we go.
For the next few months I will do some more research on vintage base ball. If anyone has anything that might be of help to me, please feel free to let me
know. I would really like to see a video or something like that in meantime. I saw a game in NY once, but don't remember any specifics. Is there anything floating out there?
How should I go about joining the NEVBBL? Should I wait until I get a full team together?
Tony
