Hey guys,
As some of you may or may not know next summer is the 150th
anniversary of the first New York style baseball game played in New
England. The game was held in 1858 on the Boston Common and pitted
the Tri Mountains of Boston against a club from Portland Maine. I
was thinking that it might be a nice idea to try to have a tournament
next summer in Boston to celebrate this event. I recently contacted
the Bostonian Society and they seem lukewarm on the idea because they
really don't understand what their part would be in putting this
together. Right now it's a concept that I have that would need to be
mapped out before I think they would sign off on it.
In saying that… Does anyone have any interest in helping me put all
of this together? If we can get this process moving now I think we
could have a very successful event next summer.
Let me know,
Brian

The Essex Club is attempting something new this season and will attempt to start a women’s club (well hopefully two). This is a newsletter that the Essex National Heritage send out that mentions what we are doing (it is towards the bottom).
A "New View" in Washington Means New Direction for American Preservationists
Last November, I was honored to be elected to my sixth term in the United States House of Representatives by the people of the Massachusetts 6th Congressional District. The American people also spoke loudly for change and, last month, I joined others in a new majority Congress in immediately working to restore honor and integrity to the "people's House."
During this Congress, I will continue my work to pass important legislation that continues the federal government's commitment to the Essex National Heritage Area. Since its creation, the Essex National Heritage Commission (ENHC) has a clear record of supporting heritage preservation, trail development and other projects to protect and improve the natural and historic resources of our local communities. Additionally, the Essex National Heritage Area is a key component of our community, spurring tourism that helps our local businesses, and fostering education about our culture and history.
The coming year brings an opportunity for Congress to reaffirm its support for Essex National Heritage Area, a proven and successful entity. With Senators Kennedy and Kerry, I will work to help make that happen.
Commissioner Corner: Kathy Leahy, Mass Audubon Society
Kathy Leahy has served as an ENHC Commissioner since October, 2002. As Director of Massachusetts Audubon Society’s North Shore Advocacy Office, (MAS:NS) Kathy oversees a program to protect critical coastal habitats through an integrated program of identification of conservation threats, education and outreach, technical assistance, advocacy, and land protection. MAS:NS focuses its efforts on issues such as open space protection, land use planning, watershed and drinking water supply protection with a particular emphasis on coastal habitats.
The conservation successes resulting from the cooperative efforts that began when MAS:NS held the first Great Marsh Summit in 1996 have been remarkable. Conservation groups and government agencies have worked together to achieve significant milestones in land conservation, habitat restoration and protection of biodiversity in the Great Marsh region. One of the most exciting partnerships, the Great Marsh Coalition, set out to give the Great Marsh the recognition it deserves as a “coastal treasure in our backyard.” We’re all thrilled to see more and more people from the North Shore and beyond learning about, appreciating and finding ways to enjoy this truly magnificent natural area.
Two upcoming events that are open to the public and that will highlight the Coalition’s activities within the Great Marsh are featured below – the Great Marsh lecture and Book signing on Sunday, March 4 and the Great Marsh Symposium on Saturday, March 10. Click here for information about both events.
Partnership Grant Spotlight: The Courtyard at the Nock Rupert A. Nock Middle School, Newburyport
ENHC is proud to support the renovation of the central courtyard at the
Rupert A. Nock Middle School in Newburyport. The school is well on its way to converting an unusable central courtyard into a thriving, year-round outdoor classroom to be used for on-site field trips. The R.A.N. Courtyard Renovation Committee received a 2006 Partnership Grant (Interpretation) to complete Stage II of this project: the brickwork. Construction and bricklaying was complete in December, and the school is poised to create its Colonial Heritage and Great March gardens in new planting areas. The transformed courtyard features amphitheatre seating, handicapped accessible walkways, and a raised platform garden that provides access for handicapped students. This innovative project will bring the region’s environment into the middle school, expanding the school’s capacity to teach cultural and natural history and environmental stewardship.
ENHC will be accepting 2007 Partnership Grant applications through noon on March 1, 2007. Application guidelines, criteria, and forms are available online. Non-profit organizations and public entities that share the mission of ENHC are encouraged to apply. You are strongly encouraged to contact ENHC staff with questions as you prepare your organization's application.
Women and Base Ball
Women have been watching and playing base ball since the beginning of 19th century. Many early women base ball players were college students. All-girl schools provided women with opportunities to play the game without attracting too much attention. Beginning in the last quarter of the 19th century, however, the novelty of women playing the game attracted large crowds. Women's barnstorming teams became popular forms of entertainment in many areas. For more info on women’s baseball click here.
The Essex Base Ball Organization, a vintage base ball group made up of three teams playing a variety of rules from the 19th century, is gearing up for its sixth season and thinking of starting two women’s teams to round out the program. We will be recruiting players for the upcoming season. For more information please email Brian Sheehy, call 978-790-5707, or visit

National Heritage Area Highlight:South Carolina NHC
The South Carolina National Heritage Corridor extends 240 miles across South Carolina, stretching from the mountains of Oconee County, along the Savannah River, to the port city of Charleston. The 14 counties of the corridor offer a cross-section of the state's history, culture, and natural landscapes. The visitor will learn of rice and indigo, pirates and patriots, slaves and freemen, cotton fields and mill villages, swamps and waterfalls, railroads and backroads, soul food and "pig-pickin's," spirituals and bluegrass.
Traveling along the corridor, you will experience the history, nature, and lifestyles of the rural South. Two routes -- the
Discovery Route and the Nature Route -- run the entire length of the Heritage Corridor, connecting special places and creating one unfolding heritage tourism destination. Plan your vacation or day trip around one of these routes, and South Carolina's heritage will unfold before you.

Hello all,
I read the article today in the New London Day regarding the
upcoming 2007 vintage baseball season. I am new to a vintage baseball
league but look forward to learning more at the meeting. sounds like
alot of fun!!

Hey everyone,
I am looking to put together some games for Trails and Sails weekend,
an event that happens in Essex County, and am looking for some teams.
I thought the weekend was September 22nd and 23rd (and I have games
scheduled for that time) but it turns out to be the following weekend
of the 29th and 30th. Here is a link that explains what the weekend is
all about http://www.essexheritage.org/ts/#
Are there any teams interested in doing something for this weekend? I
know it is late in the season and guys start thinking about football.
It would have to depend on the response for what set of rules (I would
be open for one day of 1861 and the other 1886) or what day (one day or
two days). Let me know if there is any interest out there.

Huzzah! I remember seeing a reference, perhaps this one, on the subject of a dive some years ago.

Happened to come across this recently from "Old Boston Boys and the Games They Played" James D'Wolf Lovett, 1908, p. 153.
"Mr. Chandler [Moses E Chandler of the Tri-Mountains] also had the distinction of being the first ball player in New England who, when running the bases, made a "dive" for one of them. This happened in 1859 in Portland, Maine, in a match between the Tri-Mountains and Portlands, and the feat fairly astonished the natives, who at first roared with laughter, but Chandler scored the run [last 5 words in italics], and they then woke up to the fact that a large, new and valuable "wrinkle" had been handed out to them."
That supports the head first diving in the 1860s for sure. Good citation.

Hooking up with a historical society can be very helpful if they are willing to help.... Sometimes they are sometimes they arent.
As far as the NEVBBL goes there really isnt a league right now, there is a semblance of a league but not really and it only includes 6 or 7 teams. As a whole I think most of the teams in NE (close to 20) are looking to form an association which would be very loose and basically be a way to help educate, promote,
and foster vintage base ball in NE. Whatever we form would not keep standings or force teams to play X amount of games, etc, etc.

I'm working on a team name (I'm leaning towards the Peddlers - the town symbol is a picture of a Yankee Peddler) and trying to determine the types of uniforms we will wear. I hope to partner up with the Berlin Historical Society and add sponsors as we go.
For the next few months I will do some more research on vintage base ball. If anyone has anything that might be of help to me, please feel free to let me
know. I would really like to see a video or something like that in meantime. I saw a game in NY once, but don't remember any specifics. Is there anything floating out there?
How should I go about joining the NEVBBL? Should I wait until I get a full team together?

Hey everyone,
I know several of you have sent me emails asking about the meeting and I apologize for not getting this out sooner but I was writing papers and starting a new position at school. I now have all kinds of time so I will hopefully paint a picture of what happened, what could happen, and then hopefully we can start planning.
First off there were only a handful of teams at the meeting and I would like to thank the Melrose Pondfielders, Waterbury Connors, Mudville BBC, and the Cornish Game Hens for making the trip. A few scheduling things were done and we talked about a few tournaments. (I will be attaching Essex/ Lynn's/ and our new Boston teams schedules and am looking to fill a few things…) Beyond the scheduling the only talk about an association came from Blue Reilly of the Game Hens. I hope he will post on what his plans are because I don't want to get it wrong but from what we talked about he bought a web site for New England Vintage Base Ball (he knows the address). What he sees and what I originally envisioned for this association is something where all teams in NE can come together and this web site sounds like it could accomplish that. Rules can be posted, teams can link their web sites, schedules and directions to games can be posted, and documents can be created to help new teams. ( I have a whole PowerPoint presentation on useful techniques in running and promoting a team). Essentially we would be creating a web site similar to the VBBA. New teams, fans, or anyone else interested can go to this web site get schedules, find out what other teams are in their area, and basically find out more about vintage base ball in NE. The final piece of Blue's plan was to sell tee shirts on the site…… He will have to fill you in on that. I think that a simple web site is a great start. From there we can grow and expand into a more formal thing or we can simply keep this very loose network. With all the new teams springing up I just think that it is important to have something that helps them and makes them aware of any teams in their area…..
I hope that summarizes the meeting and what I see without writing another 5 page paper. I hope this also stimulates a little discussion.

could happen, and then hopefully we can start planning.
First off there were only a handful of teams at the meeting and I
would like to thank the Melrose Pondfielders, Waterbury Connors,
Mudville BBC, and the Cornish Game Hens for making the trip. A few
scheduling things were done and we talked about a few tournaments. (I
will be attaching Essex/ Lynn's/ and our new Boston teams schedules
and am looking to fill a few things…) Beyond the scheduling the only
talk about an association came from Blue Reilly of the Game Hens. I
hope he will post on what his plans are because I don't want to get
it wrong but from what we talked about he bought a web site for New
England Vintage Base Ball (he knows the address). What he sees and
what I originally envisioned for this association is something where
all teams in NE can come together and this web site sounds like it
could accomplish that. Rules can be posted, teams can link their web
sites, schedules and directions to games can be posted, and documents
can be created to help new teams. ( I have a whole PowerPoint
presentation on useful techniques in running and promoting a team).
Essentially we would be creating a web site similar to the VBBA. New
teams, fans, or anyone else interested can go to this web site get
schedules, find out what other teams are in their area, and basically
find out more about vintage base ball in NE. The final piece of
Blue's plan was to sell tee shirts on the site…… He will have to fill
you in on that. I think that a simple web site is a great start.
From there we can grow and expand into a more formal thing or we can
simply keep this very loose network. With all the new teams
springing up I just think that it is important to have something that
helps them and makes them aware of any teams in their area…..
I hope that summarizes the meeting and what I see without writing
another 5 page paper. I hope this also stimulates a little
discussion.
Have a good holiday,

It was sort of a long process but, like
you, had a long range vision. I began planning, recruiting, practicing in
September 2005 and played our first game in May of 2006. The problem I ran into
there was some players who committed and even practiced that fall decided not
to play in the spring (losers). I still managed to pull together 18 players by
Jan. got their uniforms ordered (they paid), practiced on April weekends,
playing by May. Personally, I think you can still do this for this Spring /
Summer.

Thanks for writing. I like your club's website. I'll definitely
have a bunch of questions about that. I'm waiting to hear back from
the Berlin Citizen Newspaper. I emailed the editor about doing a
story on this topic and the team I want to form. I planned on
putting an ad in the paper but thought a story in the local paper
might generate more publicity.
How long did it take you to get the ball rolling on forming the Westfield team?
Was it a long process?

Hi all,
My name is Tony Interlandi. I live in Berlin, CT.
I am planning to start a vintage team in Berlin.
I have been in touch with Chris Moran of the Hartford Senators. He has
been a great help to me. If anyone would like to share some information
on the start-up process, websites, leagues, etc., please e-mail me or post
a message in the group. My plan is to watch some games/practices this
spring/summer and recruit players during the winter and spring; practice during
the summer and make our season debut sometime in September. My hope is to
make the debut at the Berlin Fair. The Fair was a popular
site for championship games since its inception in 1882. I have
not contacted anyone from the Berlion Lion's Club yet (it runs the
fair), but I suspect the suggestion would be acceptable. If so,
maybe we can create a small tourny (4 teams or so) for the Fair.
Also, does anyone know of any videos out there on vintage base ball
tournaments/games. For example, an ESPN video or something like that
professionally produced.
Thanks,
Tony Interlandi

Brian,
The July 14 date in Westfield has Essex, Hartford and Waterbury
involved along with 3 other, non NEVBL teams. You can certainly
arrange to "make-up" games on that date.

All:
The Bristol Blues are IN the league. We do not intend to visit Waterbury as
that weekend is already surrounded by significant travel dates for us. Sorry
Jim W.
We intend to play in Haverhill.
Thanks,
John

Can we get a yes or no from all the teams as to whether or not they will be
attending all of these events. If we get that then A. we can try to figure out
how teams not attending can play teams close to them or at another time. ex.
Essex does not really need to play Lynn at these tournaments and Lynn does not
need to play Melrose. Essex would need to play Hartford and New London more than
likely... B. we can find a replacements so that everyone plays at least 2 games.
Essex and Lynn will attend all three tournaments.

This is what we came up with- three tournaments.
June 3rd in Bristol
July 15th in Waterbury
And either August 18th or 19th in Haverhill, MA
Structure
Each team plays everyone once and the best record wins the bat. If
teams elect to not come to a tournament then they just have to find a
time to play the teams they do not play. Teams like Essex probably
would not have to play Lynn or Melrose at these tournaments so that

Schedule… I will be sending out Essex/ Lynn's schedule. I am still
looking for a few round robins so let me know if teams are interested.
I had better get ready for class… More to come soon.
