RE: [nevbbl] Sliding.....

That supports the head first diving in the 1860s for sure. Good citation.

Hey everyone,

I dont want to start a huge discussion on this but I found this
email when I was going through one of my folders. It is very
interesting, I actually requested the book...

Brian

Happened to come across this recently from "Old Boston Boys and the
Games They Played" James D'Wolf Lovett, 1908, p. 153.

"Mr. Chandler [Moses E Chandler of the Tri-Mountains] also had the
distinction of being the first ball player in New England who, when
running the bases, made a "dive" for one of them. This happened in
1859
in Portland, Maine, in a match between the Tri-Mountains and
Portlands,
and the feat fairly astonished the natives, who at first roared with
laughter, but Chandler scored the run [last 5 words in italics], and
they then woke up to the fact that a large, new and
valuable "wrinkle"
had been handed out to them."

Huzzah! I remember seeing a reference, perhaps this one, on the subject of a dive some years ago....
