Re: new to the group just had a question

Seems we have the same problem!

I have a 9-yr-old registered Arab gelding that was "cowboy" broke ...
I don't think he was EVER ridden. I can't even approach him w/a
saddle PAD much less a saddle. I even tried to mount him bareback
from a tree ... he would have NONE of it!

And Arabians are a lot less forgiving than most horses, I have found
that to be true, at least.

However, when we got him a year ago, you couldn't walk up & catch
him. He was sweet, but very wary.

For the last year, I've let him be nothing more than a horse. Usually
you have to trick him to even catch him. But just yesterday, I was
amazed that he let me walk up and just rub his face. That was after
he'd let me walk up and rub his rump. Again, he VERY seldom let me
get close enough to touch out in the pasture.

Also, for the first time in a year, I was able to pick up ALL FOUR
hooves and clean them last week. He used to kick & jerk his back feet.

Now that may be a year, but it is progress!

I've been researching his bloodlines, and was AMAZED! I posted about
him on Netposse ... his grandsire was a Spanish Arab (Galero) that
was stolen and never recovered. He also has other greats like Raffles
and Sunny Acres Lovejoye in his pedigree.

In my personal opinion, if he never is rideable and never is a
champion showhorse, he's here forever.

For the second time, I'm attending a Parelli Tour this weekend. I'm
hoping to be able to start using Parelli on him. I think he's ready
for more progress.

Whether or not you keep yours depends on why you bought him and how
you feel about him. In the shape he's in, how many other hands will
he pass through because ppl give up on him? I'm not trying to guilt
you into keeping him, but I would be really careful who you sold him
to if you chose to do so.

I truly believe that once you can gain his trust, and he knows you
nor the kids will hurt him, he'll be wonderful. But he needs time
(AND REASON) to heal from the inside first.

JMHO,

Angela
