Well, my friends. I heard back from my dear Governor. Governor Dave
Heineman, R-Nebraska, if not R the he should be. Had this to say...gee
he signed the letter "Dave" himself! I quote:
Dear Ms Safarik,
Thank you for you recent correspondence regarding the slaughter of
horse for food. Eating horse meat in America is legal, according to
the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service. If it seems wrong,
it's because our culture views horse different then other livestock.
There are several countries around the world, notably in Asia and
Europe, that have a history of consuming horse meat. Recently,
concerns about mad cow and other diseases have encouraged an increase
in horse meat consumption, because horses are not susceptible to BSE.
(Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy)
Because we view our horse as work animals or pets, we don't support
horse slaughter for food. Horses aren't raised in the United States
for domestic consumption, but upwards of 80,00 horses are slaughtered
here each year for export. The bill passed by teh U.S. House of
Representatives (and pending in the Senate) would end that practice by
banning all horse slaughter, and transport for slaughter, in America.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association and the
American Association of Equine Practitioners, the complete ban on
slaughter or transport for slaughter could have significant unintended
consequences. For your information, I have enclosed documents that
outline their positions on this issue.
Please know that your comments are always welcome. Thank you, again,
for writing and sharing your views with me.
Sincerely,
DAVE.....oh yes. He included the "press releases bemoaning the fate
of the vast unwashed masses since slaughter will be banned."
Ok, gee, I didn't know that.....that makes everything ok! What was I
thinking?!?! Killing horses is OK because they don't get BS...yes I
know what I said. Gosh, here I thought that they were my buddies!
Hell, serve me up some dog then!
I want to move! I don't want to live in a white space anymore! I'm
so ashamed! No, I didn't vote for Heineman, just to let you all know.
Who is suppose to be calling the people that represent Nebraska? They
aren't doing a very good job!
