At an association level,
the only time a best and fairest is picked is for the Grand Finals – and they
have moved it from umpires to coaches.Â
However, they left it between two coaches to choose one B&F player –
which I hated – It often meant the stronger coach could get who they wanted
picked - anyway, I didn’t like it. What
I did as a coach was to ask our life members to watch and choose for me – and work
it out so I could do what I’m there to do – coach!
For end of year, it’s
generally the coach that chooses best and fairest, most conscientious, most
improved – however, I tend to get feedback from players first – usually as a
secret vote – to help guide me. This can
be very useful when it’s a toss up between 1-2
players.
