I've got one player who also seems to have practiced some bad habits and
is often stepping. What I'm doing at training is just ongoing drills
that get them to land, step and pass, land, step and pass, etc. I'm
hoping that the continual practice will help. You might need to check
whether the stepping is caused because the player/s are landing on the
wrong foot and then need to use an extra step to balance.
If anyone has any other ideas, I'd also be happy to have them, but this
is what I'm doing:
The drill I'm using each week, which has taken a couple of weeks to
master, is "four quarters" (or I think that's what it's called). You
could also get them just to take a pass left and a pass right from you
out front - and see whether you can identify where the root of the
problem is.
In four quarters, you divide into four groups (in my team of 10 I have
two groups of three and two groups of two). Have the stand in groups
opposite each other - ie, in four groups forming a diagonal square.
Spread out in the centre-third is about the right spacing. There are
two balls. The players lead and the player to their left passes them a
ball and they receive a pass from their right and run on forward to the
line opposite them (joining the back of the line). The next two players
lead (opposite each other), take a pass from the queue on the right and
return it to the line in front and run-on, joining the same line in
front of them.
The idea is for the players to judge their timing and keep in tune with
the other line opposite. Keep their eyes up. Catch the ball, land pass
and run-on. It takes a little while to work it out and it's hard to
explain on paper, but just persevere and the players seem to get it
working with you eventually. It is a good drill for their passing,
footwork and timing all in one. I'm pretty sure it's the drill that the
CBT teams use when they're warming up. It has taken me a while to work
it out and get it going, but it's working - especially for my steppers!
Set up like this, and have them receive a pass from their right and pass
it forward to the line opposite them. Then join the line opposite, and
the next two players lead from the sides (because they then have the
balls).

Subject: [netballcoaching] Stepping
Hi all,
I am coaching a group of girls ranging from 7 to 12 years and am having
problems with the girls stepping. I NEED HELP....
It seem they have forgotten everything I have taught them. Can anyone
help
me with some basic stepping drills as I feel I need to start from
scratch.
This is very much appreciated
Leanne
