RE: [netballcoaching] Breaking Forward

I found the tip on the Cancoach website (in the latest coaching tips) to
be useful. It explains that "coming forward" is actually coming "down
and across". Somehow the girls were able to understand the concept and
it better explains how you might lead forward. I guess it's also a
matter of continually practicing the different options of breaking away
from defence (such as dodging) and also lead and re-offer.

I agree - it's one of the hardest things to cement with the younger
players. We continually do things at practice but during games the
temptation is still there to stand back and call for a lob!

Also, thank you all for your tips on the goal circle space. I used
chalk to divide the circle into quarters and explain that the two
shooters needed to be in different quarters at any time (diagonal to
each other). Since then, at a junior coaches education session last
week, I learnt a great analogy. Explain to the players that the circle
is like a platform or pontoon floating on water. If both of them are
standing on the same side or both at the front or both at the back, then
the pontoon will not stay balanced and they will sink. Then you use the
four indicative positions in the circle (back, front, left side, right
side) to practice rotating around the circle - with the player under the
post (behind) being the eyes and following the lead of the front player
by going in the opposite direction. I don't think I've explained that
very well, but I thought it was a very useful analogy and somehow the
girls seem to grasp the concept at training.

After asking them to rotate around the circle, I introduced a ball and
then after a while some defence. I'm sure the girls found it a bit
boring, but I also think that it is something that they will be able to
transfer to the game.

I would still be interested on hearing of any drills that get them to
"clear out" and re-enter the circle.

Thanks everyone for your time on this one.

Fiona

Subject: [netballcoaching] Breaking Forward

Hi guyz.

Just wondering if anybody had any ideas i could try out on my team of
13/14 year olds.

They r not breaking forward for the ball. They all want to stand
behind their players and pass the ball over the top of the players. To
many passes are getting intercepted by doing this.

Does anybody ahve any ideas i can try to get them to come forward and
use the space rather then dropping back all the time???

Thanks for any help u can provide me
