Hi Tracey - it will depend on players age, and skill levels, and how long
you've allocated to training.
As a coach of senior players, I like to allocate 1 1/2 hours for training.
Before I work out the session, I decide what I want to focus on - what are
my objectives for this particular training session. And then I build from
that. I always include warm up, stretches, and ball handling skills in the
first 1/2 hour - I may also include small rotation work that sharpens them
up for the rest of the session, such as jumps etc. The second 1/2 hour is
normally smaller drills to get the little things right, that are then built
on to more complex drills, and then related to game play.
For example, if I noticed during the week before's game that the players
were not timing their breaking properly I might practice simple breaking
techniques, strong leads, strong lands. Add a pass so they time their land
with the big stretch at the end. Add another pass so they have to pivot.
Add a second lead from another player so that they're pivoting to throw to
someone and timing their drive after someone has caught the ball,
progressing to a full court drill with all players. Finally, application in
a 1/2 court game or similar...
A simple version, but I find working out what I want them to be doing, and
breaking it up into directed skills practice is great - especially because
players can see where it's going to. Doing a whole heap of drills, without
a clear reason doesn't work that well. I also like to spend some time at
the end of the session discussing what we've done, and where we're going -
and to get feedback from the players.
Good Luck!
Michelle

Subject: [netballcoaching] Setting out a training session
Hi
Can anyone give me some tips on setting out a training session, I know heaps
of drills but putting the session into some sort of order is stumping me, I
want to make it interesting and fun, but I keep going off on different
tangents.
Is there an easy way to plan a training session?
Thanks
Tracey
