Hey,
I injured my ankles badly through gymnastics when I was younger and then had
some trouble with my ankles when I started playing netball. My physio
recommended that I use strapping (although this tends to loossen off during
the game so the level of support drops) and also concentrate on increasing
the strength of my ankles.
I still continue my strengthning exercises 3 years later (I am now 16) but
weaned myself off strapping. I think it's better to have 'real' strength in
the ankles ie: the muscles. My physio also gave me exercises to improve my
balance and the strength of my other leg joints to take some pressure off my
ankles. I have not had a problem with my ankles since.
In conclusion: I think strapping is for people who have had problems not for
prevention. Things like having proper shoes, good courts, and doing leg
strengthning exercises are other ways to prevent ankle injuries without
becoming dependant on strapping.
