Nick Scott, 41, former cox at Newcastle RGS Boat Club, Tyne Rowing Club and
Newcastle University Boat Club, sadly died on January 23rd 2007.
Nick loved sport, but had a congenital heart problem that meant he was
unable to take part in active sport. Rowing gave Nick the chance to train
and compete in sport as a cox. Throughout the 1980s Nick was an ever present
sight in the coxes seat on the River Tyne. He began his coxing at school for
Newcastle Royal Grammar School and later moved on to Tyne Rowing Club and
Newcastle University Boat Club.
Nick hung up his rudder when he graduated in 1989, but made a return to
coxing in December 2006 when he coxed a veteran Newcastle University Boat
Club alumni crew from the 1980s of Chris Squires-Parkin, Chris Davey, Bruce
Willoughby and Kevin Oates at Tyne Rutherford Head Race.
It was fitting that Nick managed to make a final coxing trip on his beloved
River Tyne before he died. Nick still retained an interest in rowing and
regularly attended local regattas in the North East. Nicks final visit to a
regatta as a spectator was in August 2006, when he attended the World Rowing
Championships at Dorney Lake. Rowing and coxing gave Nick years of
enjoyment, pleasure and the chance to compete in sport.
Nick was a great supporter of Oxfam and his family have set up a website in
memory of Nick for donations to Oxfam at www.justgiving.com/nickscott.

Because some thieving so-and-so nicked my oars from under my yacht
tender, I am looking for a pair of old sculling blades that I can cut
down and use. If you or your club have any wooden sculling blades
(carbon is a bit too hard to shave down!) that have seen better days
and are taking up a corner of your boathouse, I would be grateful to
hear of them.
Happy to make a small donation to the club in return.

Subject: Rowing in 1840s Yorkshire
Dear Ken
I have recently come accross a series of references to Rowing, and
also to Regattas in Yorkshire in the 1840s.
Firstly a reference to the founding of the Wakefield Rowing & Gig
Club in June 1848, which was established for "rowing and aquatic
aerobics"; they held their first Regatta on the Calder in August 1848
with four-our cutters and also gigs. The Wakefield Herald of 23rd
June 1848 called if a "delighful aquatic amusement" and was very
tongue in cheak about the whole affair.
Secondly refernece to the York Regatta of June 26th 1848, between
"Shakespeare" Rowing Club of Manchester and "Mezappa" Rowing Club of
Durham. This was the first rowing regatta held on the Ouse which was
considered to be "admirably adapted for a boat race". You mention on
your website timeline that the first York regatta was 1843, but this
appears to be contradicted by the press reports of 1848. Clarification
would be welcome.
The Crews competed for a £50 cash prize.
The "Shakespeare" Crew were George Collings, Thomas McCormick, Henry
Ault, Samuel Wood
"Mazeppa" were William Foster, William Mann, William Houlson and Henry Ebdy.
The coxes are not recorded.
The Umpire was Alfred Hargrove of York.
The Mezappa crew reportedly beaten South Shields RC at the Durham
Regatta of 1847 and also "Claspers" RC of Newcastle in the same year.
I was wondering if you could shed any light on these early clubs and
regattas; coming from Wakefield and being a rower I never knew we had
a Rowing Club or our own regatta! I wonder what happened to the club.
Yours

John Mulholland has advised that he has now received a completed Water
Safety Audit for each Club, College, School and University in the region.
Can I thank everyone involved in achieving that milestone and to make a plea
that everyone aims to complete within the original date in future. This will
save John in particular a lot of chasing up work bearing in mind that he is
a volunteer.
John will be examining the audits and picking up areas of concern with each
organisation on an individual basis.
Thank you.

Does anyone have a fine coxed pair they are willing to lend / hire out? [or know
who has one etc]
Barbara Millns [Tyne RC & Div Rep] is going to be seat racing in one at
Caversham in a couple of months time; the next step in her quest to get into the
GB LTA [addaptive] 4+. She has been doing regular outings in a 2- but has never
even been in a 2+; probably a good idea to have a go before seatracing.
All clues to tracking one down gratefully received.

Interestingly, Kim Metcalfe mentioned "That was in June, a week before
Durham regatta. It was topped by another flood later in the year.
The heights are marked inside DARC boathouse. Housebuilders should note
that neither of these is anywhere in the top 100 year floods"
and John Lyons had a chuckle at the thought of our quaint English
eccentric ways - we get a major flood and everyone sculls in the car
park and has a barbeque !

Press Release Starts
The English Indoor Rowing Championships were held on 28 January 2007 at the
Manchester Velodrome. Durham Amateur Rowing Club's (DARC) Gill Prescott
competed in the Ladies' 40-49 age group category winning a gold medal with a
personal best time of 7 minutes and 15 seconds over 2000 metres, taking the
honours in this category. This was an absolutely fantastic performance -
not only did Gill compete at the top of her age category (aged 49 years),
she also beat the times of many younger rowers from teenage years up! Indeed
this personal best time was the fastest 2000 metre Ladies' time in all
categories on the day!
Results are available -
http://www.concept2.co.uk/racing/result.php?race=englishirc2007
Last Year Gill also won in her category at the British Indoor Rowing
Championships at Birmingham, over 2000 metres with a time of 7 minutes and
17 seconds. On the water of course, Gill can also demonstrate her skill and
is part of the reputed DARC Women's Veteran C Quadruple Scull who include
local rowers Carolyn Edwards, Christine Heppell and Sam English. This crew
had a string of wins during 2006 including winning a Silver medal at the
National Veteran Championships in Nottingham and finishing fastest ladies
four in the gruelling Boston Marathon - a 31 mile endurance event.
