A full update on the MLS expansion and San Diego's standing follows, but first here are notes on the latest team names for Major League Soccer's new season, which begins two weeks from this coming Saturday, April 1st (ABC, ESPN-2, FSW, FSC).
HOUSTON DYNAMO - Only weeks after the Houston franchise was officially dubbed "Houston 1836" (after year of city's founding), chosen by fans' online votes, team management made an internal decision to change the moniker to DYNAMO.
This was due to the local Houston controversy, which never subsided, over the dual historical significance of that year among Latinos and Mexican nationals. 1836 was also the year of the Alamo and other battles which resulted in independence FROM
Mexico (further resulting in founding of cities like Houston). SO MANY locals of Mexican descent in Houston complained that the team finally relented and renamed.
RED BULL NEW YORK - With the players themselves affectionately dubbed "the
New York Red Bulls", the official team name comes from last week's purchase of the MetroStars by the Austrian beverage makers. This is the team who has selected Poway HS alum and 2006 Number One pick (in the MLS SuperDraft) Marvell Wynne.
New York is included in the name for the first time officially since the 2000 season (they had been called NY/NJ MetroStars), though the team will continue to play in New Jersey for the time being at the MetroStars former home, Giants Stadium. The team's new stadium, which will be co-financed by partners including Red Bull, with AEG (who co-built STAPLES Center and HOME DEPOT Center),
will also stand
in New Jersey, but the team's official name will remain RED BULL NEW YORK.
Expansion News Update:
The city of Toronto, Ontario, with NHL Maple Leafs owners as business partners, will build a new soccer-specific stadium complex there, and will host the first-ever MLS franchise in Canada. They were already named as the league's 13th team back in November 2005. A 14th team will join them for the 12th MLS season in 2007.
San Jose CA will have stadium issues to work out, but assuming they can do that soon, they could field a new branded Earthquakes team in 2007 or 2008. Other cities on the fast track to MLS franchises are Philadelphia PA (the only metro area larger than San Diego still without a team), Atlanta GA, Tulsa OK, and the two current frontrunners to be included in teams 14-16, Milwaukee WI and
Cleveland OH. Milwaukee has the most popular MISL team this season, and a successful outdoor version of the Wave, too. Cleveland would like to have the third MLS in-state rivalry, competing with Columbus Crew (club team of USMNT defender, Cardiff's Frankie Hejduk). Both of those city governments are likely to share in their MLS plans.
San Diego will need to concentrate on vying for the 17th or 18th spots, and this is why our public Project Phase, as well as our website (which debuted on MLS Cup Championship day 16 weeks ago), was dubbed Target:2010. While this IS realistic, it is by no means assured that we'd have a team in place by then, even in the best of circumstances. We are in the process of setting up our first official public meetings and workshops, and expect to meet with several local city and tribal councils through this spring, summer, and beyond. We are
happy to see that so many numerous localities have expressed initial interest in hosting our region's MLS team, so we have full confidence that San Diego WILL have their own MLS franchise.. and soon.
We invite all of you to get involved and support our common cause in any way.
Thank you for all of you interest and support shown during the first 15 weeks of our website's existence: Numbers of visitors have far surpassed our expectations.
We DO aim high: Now we know there are SO MANY MORE of you out there with
the same desire, so we know the community together WILL reach OUR GOAL !
RED BULL PURCHASES METROSTARS AND INVESTS IN SOCCER-SPECIFIC STADIUM
World's Leading Energy Drink Re-brands Team Red Bull New York
NEW YORK (Thursday, March 9, 2006) - Red Bull Company Limited, the Austrian company that produces the world's leading energy drink, today finalized an agreement to purchase the MetroStars of Major League Soccer and partner with AEG on the construction of the team's soccer-specific stadium in Harrison, New
Jersey. With the purchase, the team will be re-branded as "Red Bull New York", including a new logo, uniforms and team colors to take effect immediately.
Red Bull's agreement with AEG, the team's former investor-operator, was approved by the MLS Board of Governors today, and includes the two companies joining together to invest in the custom-built stadium for the team in Harrison. As part of the agreement, Red Bull also purchased naming rights to the soccer-specific stadium.Red Bull will have a 50 percent ownership stake in the facility, and AEG will remain responsible for constructing, managing and booking the venue.
"The addition of Red Bull into our group of owners is a landmark moment for Major League Soccer and for all Tri-State area soccer fans," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said. "Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz brings international credibility and proven, innovative marketing expertise to Major League Soccer. His presence on the MLS Board of Governors
provides another authentic, avid soccer fan to our diversifying set of investors."
Red Bull New York's team emblem, unveiled today on www.newyorkredbulls.com, features two bulls charging toward a soccer ball. The team opens its 2006 campaign on Sunday, April 2 against D.C. United at RFK Stadium (5 p.m. ET). The team's home opener at Giants Stadium is Saturday, April 8 against the New England Revolution (7:30 p.m.).The Red Bull New York uniforms will be unveiled soon.
With Red Bull's eastern regional offices located in Hoboken, N.J., its commitment to the metropolitan New York area team suits both the company and Major League Soccer. In recent years, Red Bull has increased its investment in professional sports, including NASCAR, extreme sports and Formula One auto racing. In professional soccer, it has transformed Red Bull Salzburg into one of Austria's leading first division clubs by signing impact players and using innovative
marketing to increase attendance.
Soccer comes from the shortening of the word Association.
Association ->Assoc. Assocer -> Person pertaining/belonging to (a) Football association. Assocer -> Soccer.
Soccer came to mean the sport itself, not only a participant.
The term was used in England first, and still is used there today, alongside football and "footie".
American football, on the other hand, did not derive its name (by copying) from soccer-football, but was named after the actual ball used, the "football" taken from rugby, which is still the same unique shape and size
today.
So... short story, when someone argues with you that the word soccer is an "Americanism", you can tell them how wrong they are...

Taylor Twellman awarded 2005 GOLDEN BOOT
for his 17 goals during regular season...
New Taylor Twellman Community at orkut,

It is the second scoring championship for Twellman, who becomes just
the second player to win the award more than once, having also taken
the prize in his first MLS season in 2002, when it also included
assists.
"It means a lot," Twellman said of capturing the Golden Boot. "The
last year and a half has been pretty difficult, including this year.
At the end of the day, if we don't win the championship it (doesn't
mean much) to me."
The Revolution have put themselves in a great position to claim
their first MLS Cup, thanks in no small part to Twellman's
consistent contributions. New England finished atop the Eastern
Conference with 59 points from a 17-7-8 record. On several occasions
this season Twellman struck late to win or tie games for the
Revolution, including in the season opener.
The Revs, the Eastern Conference's best team, will meet the Chicago
Fire in the Conference Final this weekend to see who goes on to the
MLS Cup on Nov. 13th.

Taylor Twellman wins MLS 2005 GOLDEN BOOT
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/soccerhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/mls2infinity2005
With the conclusion of the MLS regular season on Sunday, New England
Revolution forward Taylor Twellman claimed the Budweiser Golden
Boot, awarded to the leading goal scorer during the MLS regular
season.
With 17 goals on the campaign (including none on penalty kicks),
Twellman finished one goal ahead of D.C. United forward Jaime Moreno
(16 goals) and four goals ahead of forwards Landon Donovan (12
goals) of the Los Angeles Galaxy and Jeff Cunningham (12 goals) of
the Colorado Rapids.
Since coming to MLS at the start of the 2002 season, the 25-year old
Twellman has scored more goals than any other player in the League
during that span, tallying 64 goals in 98 career regular season
games. The native of St. Louis, Missouri is the third consecutive
Revolution player to lead or tie for the league-lead in goals
scored. Teammate Pat Noonan tied Eddie Johnson (Dallas) with 12
goals in 2004 and Twellman tied Carlos Ruiz (Los Angeles Galaxy)
with 15 goals in 2003.
Twellman, the Honda Most Valuable Player of the 2005 Sierra Mist MLS
All-Star Game, has re-emerged on the international scene with the
U.S. national team. He scored his first goal for the U.S. on
Wednesday in a 2-0 World Cup Qualifying win over Panama at Gillette
Stadium, home of the Revolution.
The 2005 Budweiser Golden Boot winner and his Revolution teammates
face the MetroStars in the Eastern Conference Semifinals home-and-
home series beginning on Saturday, October 22 at Giants Stadium.
Three players have led the League in goals scored and gone on to win
the MLS Cup title in the same year: Carlos Ruiz (LA - 2002), Roy
Lassiter (D.C. United - 1999) and Jaime Moreno (D.C. United - 1997).

ON THE GROUND IN GUATEMALA: The U.S. Men's National
Team headed South yesterday afternoon, traveling by
charter from Columbus to Guatemala City and arriving
at approximately 5 p.m. local time. Met by a large
contingent of reporters and photographers at the team
hotel, the team settled into its temporary home in the
heart of Guatemala City. The 18-man contingent will
hold its only training session in country later this
afternoon at the Estadio Mateo Flores, just over 24
hours in advance of their World Cup qualifying matchup
with Guatemala. Kickoff for MatchDay 8 of final round
qualifying is set for 10 p.m. ET, and the match will
be broadcast live on ESPN2. As always, fans can also
follow along on ussoccer.com's MatchTracker, presented
by Philips Electronics. The U.S. starting lineup
against Guatemala will be posted at ussoccer.com
approximately one hour before kickoff.
PRESSURE IS ON THE NEW CREW: After the 2-0 victory
against Mexico guaranteed a spot in the 2006 FIFA
World Cup, U.S. Manager Bruce Arena set about
adjusting the travel roster for the upcoming qualifier
against Guatemala to give players the chance to show
themselves under challenging circumstances, to say the
least. "This is a fantastic opportunity for this
group to demonstrate they can perform in this type of
environment," said Arena. "Can they win a game where
the home team is desperate, the crowd is against them,
and the conditions are difficult? Players that can do
that are the kind of players that can possibly help
your team in a World Cup. It's a great chance for
them to prove that."

Qualifying for the FIFA World Cup is sweet. Doing it against your archrival is nirvana. The United States is headed to next year's finals in Germany after beating Mexico 2-0 Saturday night thanks to goals by Steve Ralston and DaMarcus Beasley five minutes apart in the second half.
The quick strikes, after a sloppy and chippy first half, lifted the Americans into the 32-team tournament with three games to spare. It was the first time since 1934 that the Americans were the first team into the FIFA World Cup from the North, Central American and the Caribbean zone.
It's also the fifth straight finals appearance for the Americans, who are ranked sixth in the world, one spot behind Mexico.
The win avenged a 2-1 loss in Mexico City in March and gave American goalkeeper Kasey Keller his 50th career victory for the national team. The United States has not lost to Mexico on American soil since 1999, and has not yielded any goals in that span, either.
On both U.S. goals, Mexico seemed confused who should be where on set plays. Eddie Lewis' floating free kick was headed by Oguchi Onyewu, whose 6-foot-4 height came in handy as he soared over the smallish, befuddled defense. His shot hit the goalpost and bounded into the air directly to the unmarked Ralston for his second career international goal.
That woke up the flag-waving, red-white-and-blue clad American fans, who began pounding the bleachers with their feet. The noise seemed to further unnerve the visitors, and they were out of position on a short U.S. corner kick.
The ball came to Claudio Reyna and the unmarked U.S. captain fed an equally wide-open Beasley. His twisting left-footed kick soared over goalie Oswaldo Sanchez, who had no chance.
From there, it was a matter of getting another shutout for Keller, who now has blanked five straight opponents in qualifying and has a scoreless streak of 507 minutes in all. The Americans are 6-1 in the final qualifying round and play at Guatemala on Wednesday, when most of the regulars will be excused.
Mexico (5-1-1) still need another point in its final three games to make Germany 2006.
At the final whistle, most of the 24,685 fans chanted "U-S-A! U-S-A!" as several players ran off the bench wrapped in American flags. All of the Americans were handed flags, which they then draped on their shoulders or waved to the crowd as fireworks lit the sky.

In this big weekend for U.S. Soccer, the hurricane victims will not be forgotten. Both the USMNTand MEXICO, as well as MLS players in regular-season matches on Saturday and Sunday will be donating the jerseys and other gear from those games to raise relief funds.
Items begin posting for sale online Saturday, and 100% of the monies go to the victims.
It's been six years since Mexico last won a game in the USA...(a 2-1 win in the 1999 U.S. Cup) and the last time Mexico won a qualifier on U.S. soil was in 1972.
Perhaps more important, under Bruce Arena, the United States has consistently beaten Mexico when it mattered most, especially that World Cup second-round game in South Korea three years ago. They have established themselves as Mexico's equal, something preposterous to think about even 15 years ago.
In San Diego, the match will be shown live in both English and Spanish, at 4:25 pm PDT.
