Revs vs. Rapids [R]

Amazing saves by Brown and Cannon highlight 0-0 draw between the Revs and
Rapids

DENVER, COL. (5/7/04)- Both the New England Revolution (1-2-2) and Colorado
Rapids (1-1-3) had a few great goal scoring opportunities, but poor shot
placement
and amazing saves by goalkeepers Adin Brown and Joe Cannon kept both teams off
the score sheet. For the third straight game the Revs have been playing with the
same
makeshift back-line and midfield and have only allowed 2 goals in those 3 games,
while going undefeated in that stretch. The Rapids extended an undefeated streak
of
their own, going undefeated in their last 15 home games and tying the MLS record
in
front of an extremely poor attendance of 7,784. The tie was a very good result
for the
Revs considering they were forced to play a man down for over 15 minutes after
Shalrie Joseph was ejected in the 75th minute.

The Rapids dominated the first half, but the Revs defense managed to prevent
them
from getting any clear cut scoring opportunities.

The Revs almost took the lead in the 42nd minute, when Taylor Twellman was
fouled
around 40 yards from goal. Joe Franchino sent the free kick into the box and it
was
cleared by the Rapids, but only as far as Jay Heaps in the far right corner of
the box.
Heaps crossed it to a wide-open Twellman, who was right on the edge of the
6-yard
box. Twellman brought the ball down with his chest and sent a hard shot on
target.
Rapids' keeper Joe Cannon got down quickly and deflected the shot just enough so
that it hit the cross bar and bounced back into play.

The game opened up in the second half and both teams saw plenty of scoring
chances. Twellman saw another great chance denied by Cannon in the 56th minute,
when he received the ball from a perfect lob by Jose Cancela. Twellman once
again
brought the ball down on his chest and sent a powerful shot on target from about
6
yards out, only to see it saved by Cannon's face. The rebound fell to Pat
Noonan, who
tried to beat Cannon while he was recovering, but saw his shot blocked by a
diving
Pablo Mastroeni.

Colorado had a great chance five minutes later, when David Castellanos received
a
through ball from Mark Chung. Castellanos then dribbled to the 6 yard box before
sending a blazing shot over the crossbar. A minute later, Jean-Philippe Peguero
sent a
close-range chance just wide of the post.

Jose Cancela, who has been threatening to score on free kicks all season, nearly
gave
the Revs the lead when he sent a curling free kick from just outside the box
around
the Rapids' wall and towards the upper-right corner of the net. Cannon managed
to
punch the ball out of bounds. On the ensuing corner kick, Clint Dempsey beat
Cannon
to Cancela's cross, but headed it just over the net.

Four minutes later, the Revs were forced to play a man down, when Shalrie Joseph
was
given a red card for pulling down Chris Henderson on a breakaway. Colorado took
control of the match from then on and would force Brown into many spectacular
saves. Mark Chung, Gary Sullivan, and Ritchie Kotschau all saw chances to win
the
match for the Rapids, but saves by Brown, a block by Ralston, a wide shot and a
save
by the post kept the game at 0-0.

Adin Brown was named Man of the Match for his performance as he earned his first
shutout of the season. The Revs next travel to Columbus to face the last place
Crew
on May 15th 4:00pm. The game can be seen on ESPN2.
