Revolution Update: Tornberg named GM, three players waived,
three players undergo surgery, Murphy releases book

By Sean Donahue

FOXBORO, MA. - On December 16th, the New England
Revolution promoted Craig Tornberg to General Manager.
Tornberg had been with the Revs since their inception in 1995
and had been their Assistant GM and Director of Fan
Development. Tornberg had worked since 1991 to bring world
class soccer events to Foxboro. The Revs went without a GM last
year after Todd Smith left the position at the end of 2002
because of medical problems and so he could spend more time
with his family.

On November 25th, the Revs placed defender Nick Downing,
forward Ibrahim Kante and forward/midfielder Tony Frias on the
waivers. None were selected in the waiver draft later that day.
Downing had been with the Revs since 2001 playing in 17
games. He spent much of 2003 on loan to the Portland Timbers
of the A-League. Kante, the brother of the Revs Daouda Kante,
joined the Revs May 21st, 2003 and played a total of 65 minutes
in two MLS appearances. Frias had been with the Revs since
2001, but had not played a single minute.

Three Revs underwent postseason surgery at Mass General
Hospital. Revolution forward Taylor Twellman had a screw
inserted into his left fifth metatarsal on November 17th.
Twellman suffered a stress fracture on October 4th in the Revs
4-1 win over the Dallas Burn, in which he scored two goals. He
is expected to undergo six weeks of rehabilitation. Goalkeeper
Adin Brown had surgery to repair a tear in his left external
oblique, a muscle in his abdominal wall on December 17th. He
is expected to fully recover in 4 to 6 weeks. Defender Rusty
Pierce had abductor release surgery on his left groin on
November 26th. He is expected to be out eight to twelve weeks.
All three should be back in time for the start of the Revs regular
season on April 3rd in Los Angeles.

Revolution Assistant Coach John Murphy recently released a
book called "The Full Season Goalkeeper Training Program".
Murphy has been in charge of coaching the Revolution
goalkeepers and has helped turn Adin Brown into one of the top
goalies in the league. The book shows every practice and drill
Murphy used in during the 2002 season.
