By Sean Donahue
SOUTHLAKE, Texas. – The New England Revolution extended their
undefeated streak to 4 games with a 4-1 victory over the last-place
Dallas Burn on Saturday, October 4th. Taylor Twellman lead the Revs
with two goals as he took over the MLS goal scoring lead with his
14th and 15th goals. With the win the Revs (9-9-9) move to two
points from second and four points ahead of Columbus for the final
playoff spot.
The Burn quickly took control of the match and took the lead in the
20th minute. Ali Curtis sent a perfect cross to Oscar Pareja, who
ran onto it and easily shot it past Revs goalie Adin Brown from
close range.
Brown would make several key saves before the Revs got the equalizer
in the 44th minute. Taylor Twellman played a give-and-go with Brian
Kamler and ended up in the penalty area, where he sent a powerful
low shot past Dallas goalie Jeff Cassar, tying the game going into
halftime.
Shalrie Joseph gave the Revs the lead just 8 minutes into the second
half, when Jose Cancela sent a perfect corner kick into the 6-yard
box. Joseph rose above everyone and headed it past Cassar for his
second goal of the season. Joseph's only other goal came last
weekend when he headed in a Joe-Max Moore corner against Columbus.
Taylor Twellman scored his 15th goal of the season just 7 minutes
later. Cancela sent a wonderful through ball to Twellman, who beat
the offside trap and shot it past Cassar for a 3-1 lead.
Pat Noonan put the game out of reach for the Burn in the 75th
minute, when he received the ball from Steve Ralston. Noonan beat
defender Brian Dunseth and ran in alone on Cassar. Noonan than sent
a perfectly placed shot past Cassar for the 6th goal of his rookie
campaign.
The Revs were without defenders Joe Franchino and Carlos Llamosa
(torn MCL) along with forwards Chris Brown (broken foot) and Joe-Max
Moore, who was kept out to prevent reinjury of his left knee on the
FieldTurf surface in Southlake.
The Revs next face D.C. United at Gillette Stadium on Saturday,
October 11th at 4:00p.m. With a win they would leap frog D.C. into
third place and that combined with a Metrostars loss could see them
move into second.
