Rapids Rush Past Revs
DENVER - Colorado Rapids exploded for three goals in the first
39 minutes and handed New England Revolution their first loss
away from home this season, strolling to a 4-1 victory for just
their second triumph in 2003.
Seth Trembly, John Spencer and Mark Chung had sent Rapids
(2-6-2, 8 pts.) up by three goals heading into halftime, then Chris
Carrieri made it 4-0 midway through the second half, before
Wolde Harris replied with a late consolation goal for New
England (4-3-3, 15 pts.).
The match started with brightly with both teams having good
opportunities in the first few minutes, but the home side took
after just nine minutes of play. Ritchie Kotschau won a heading
duel in midfield, John Spencer running onto the clearance and
carrying into the area before laying it square just inside the area.
Seth Trembly came running on and drilled a low shot past Adin
Brown.
Spencer went just high from close range shortly after, then Chris
Carrieri somehow contrived to hit the post from even closer
range after he had fought off a tackle. But still, it wouldn't be long
for Colorado to again celebrate - despite having scored just one
goal in their last 10 hours of play coming into the match.
In the 21st minute, the Rapids won a corner, and after a weak
clearance was pumped back in, Spencer found Chung all alone
on the right flank. Chung whipped in a cross where Spencer has
wheeled back around to the spot, and the diminutive Scotsman
put an absolutely clear header past Brown to the back of the net.
With two goals in a match for the first time this season, the
Rapids attack was on full song, cutting the Rev defense into
shreds. Carrieri again had two excellent chances in short order
on balls pulled back from the byeline, Brown both times making
terrific saves to keep the margin at two.
Then six minutes before the interval, Colorado made the lead
three. Henderson led a fast counter by dribbling down the center
of the park and found Chung to his left. Allowing plenty of time,
Chung ripped a low angled drive from inside the box to the far
post past Brown's despairing dive.
The Revolution came into the match missing two players who
had contributed 10 of their 15 goals on the season - Taylor
Twellman (six) away with the U.S. national team, and Brian
Kamler (four) sidelined by an ankle injury. Rapids 'keeper Scott
Garlick was rarely troubled - forced to tip a Pat Noonan shot
around the post at full stretch in the first half, then early in the
second, relieved to see a Wolde Harris header skim off the top of
the bar.
Carrieri saw Brown save well again, before the young striker
finally hit for his second goal of the season - but in spectacular
fashion. Substitute Zach Kingsley cut a cross back from the
byeline and Carrieri hit a full volley into the roof of the net from the
corner of the goal area.
Garlick was called upon a couple more times, saving from
Harris when he was all alone at the penalty spot, then parrying a
powerful drive from a tight angle from Joe-Max Moore, but he
was desperately disappointed to see his clean sheet spoiled
eight minutes from time. Harris was put in behind the Colorado
defense by Daniel Hernandez in the inside-left channel and
drove a low shot inside the far post.
Both teams are on the road next weekend for inter-conference
clashes, New England traveling to D.C. United (7:30 p.m. ET, Fox
Sports World), while Colorado head to Texas to take on Dallas
Burn (8 p.m. CT).
