Re: [NEKS] Re: airport baggage expenses/ used bag for board

All correct!
I've never been charged (so far) with the golf bag traveling to Aruba, Hawaii,
Fla.. California, Puerto Rico and elsewhere..
Fits boards up to 147cm but NOT longer. 2 kites.. 3 if they are small and
wrapped tight... Try suction wrapping kites in a plastic bag using the suction
port of your kite pump.. VERY TINY!!
Never say the word "board".. and Try to keep wt<50lb (I've gotten on free at
63lb cause some airlines allow golf bags to be up to 70lb.. but I wouldn't count
on that kind of luck always...!!)
Curb checks are WORTH the $5... vs $50 with the indoor baggage trolls!
Good luck!

Having just returned from Florida I can say that they are definately
checking weight and size. The best suggestions I have are: Check
your big bags at the Sky check, you know, those guys suffering
outside (make sure to have five bucs in your free hand) DO NOT go to
the counter, they are Nazis once you walk in the door. Also, if
asked DO NOT say its kiteboard equip (instead say it snowboarding)
or get a bag such as the ones Bests sells...;^), no really, they are
the way to go or get a large snowboard bag. Its Golf or Snowboard,
otherwise you will get hit with either a 50 or 75 up charge each
way. Lastly, check your bags upon arrival at your destination and be
sure to remove anything applied to them such as tags saying "heavy
item" those are there for two reasons, A, put your stuff on the
bottom and B, they raise a red flag at the airport when your
returning. Anyone heading to the beach this Thursday? I cant believe
its january, the end of days must be near, go kiting while you can!

kiter traffic (ie Cabarete, Miami), I think they've pretty much
caught on to the whole"golf" thing. But still, I don't tell them
there's a board in there.

charging, but of course, call first to check. If the bag is
overweight, they'll hit you with a fee, which could vary from
airline to airline. Generally, it seems to be about a $75 per peice
overweight charge I think the most you can check is 4 bags, but
for each extra bag, theyll charge you $75 each. (I've never gotten
charged $75 for an extra bag, and $75 because it's overweight, but I
think if someone was trying to be a dick, it would be in their realm
to do so. The most I've ever had to pay, for 4 overweight bags, was
$300 ... that's flying Tam to Brazil.)
>
> Domestically, most airlines allow you to check 2 bags, up to 50
lbs each, without charging you ... but again, call first. I recently
packed one small kite, a harness, a bar, a pump and some clothes
into a golf bag (which is not a whole lot of stuff ... I didn't even
have a board) and was already over the 50 lb limit. I didn't get
charged because they were too busy with holiday traffic. There may
be a size limit also ...I think it depends on the airline .... but
with the golf bag I had, they were just concerned with the weight.
They didn't say anything to me about the length (that was on USAir)
>
> If you have a lot of stuff to take, it's best to split it up
into 2 bags to try to avoid the charges. You can also wrap your
harness around a kite, stick a bar in the side pocket, and carry it
on with you, to try to keep your checked baggage weight down. (I do
that anyway ... carry on my most important kite size,
harness, etc ... just in case the other stuff gets lost. You can
generally rent or borrow a board from someone ... kites are a bit
different.)
