The Norfolk County Futsal League will host Massachusetts Futsal
Association's annual United States Futsal Federation (USFF) Referee
Certification and Recertification class at the Dana Barros Sports
Complex at 31 Oxford Rd., Mansfield, Massachusetts on Saturday,
November 12, 2005 from 1-7 pm.
This is the only such USFF certification class to be presented this
year in the state of Massachusetts. All USFF sanctioned futsal
leagues and programs are required to use certified referees.
Attendance at the annual class is a pre-requisite to receiving
recertification for existing referees and for certification of new
referees. An official representative from the United States Futsal
Federation shall be on hand for the classroom instructions. The
USFF Referee Certification Clinic by Alex Para, President of the
USFF will take place from 1 pm to 5 pm and the USFF Referee Re-
Certification will take place from 5 pm to 7 pm.
In addition, this year, the director of Norfolk County Futsal
League, Bill Sampaio who is also the National Director of Coaching
of the United States Futsal Federation shall conduct a Coaching
Seminar that focuses on coaching in a youth futsal league from 1 pm
to 5 pm.
In a recent press release by Vincent Mauro, Director of Referees for
the USFF, he stated that, 'Since 1982, U.S. Futsal has developed and
trained referees. Since 1983, some of these Futsal referees have
gone on to referee International competitions, and have also been
involved in directing the Championship Finals in the Futsal World
Championships of 1985, 1988, 1996, 2000 and 2004. The 1992, FIFA
Futsal World Championship had the USA participating so a U.S. Futsal
Referee would not have been eligible. U.S Futsal has taken great
pride since its inception to develop qualified Futsal referees. This
year U.S. Soccer has instituted its indoor soccer referee program
and decided to add Futsal to that program. U.S. Soccer needs to show
that it has a Futsal program, because it also wants to nominate FIFA
Futsal referees . Nevertheless, only U.S. Futsal Referees shall be
used on all affiliated Futsal games.'
Interested individuals may pre-register for these classes online at
www. newenglandfutsal .com or they may contact New England Futsal
Referee Coordinator Loretta Chin by email at lorettachin @
comcast.net.
Inquiries may be directed by telephone to Coach Bill Sampaio at 774-

During this past July, fourteen Futsal teams from Massachusetts
participated in the 20th Annual United States Futsal Federation
National Championships held in Anaheim, California. Five of these
teams came away as medalists and two teams were crowned National
Champions. All of these teams will be on hand to demonstrate the
game of Futsal as part of a "Futs-on" pre-game & mini-clinic.
United States Futsal Federation sanctioned leagues in our area who
will be represented at this event include the Catholic Youth Futsal
program of Fall River, Massachusetts, the Greater Fall River Futsal
League, the New England Futsal Academy of Mansfield, MA, the Essex
County Futsal League and the Norfolk County Futsal League.
This will be a fun-filled event and will provide tremendous exposure
to the sport of Futsal here in Massachusetts and New England and we
are excited about this opportunity to showcase the benefits of, and
excitement for, the great sport of Futsal. Gillette Stadium has a
seating capacity for some 68,000 people and this type of exposure is
just tremendous for Futsal!
Futsal is the game of skill, speed and goals that soccer's Ronaldo
credits for Brazil's victory at the 2002 World Cup finals.
Futsal is played on basketball size courts with five players per
side. The futsal ball is also very different - with a low bounce, it
is heavier and smaller forcing players to use skill to manage it.
The beauty of futsal in New England is its ability to be played off
season on indoor courts. The unique ball means you play a very
different game as well with more ball control and quick, short
precise passing. A player is always moving and always involved in
the game. As Coach Bill says to his players, "If you're not moving,
you're not playing!"
We want people to get out there and really enjoy this great sport.
Futsal has had a significant role to play in the development of
soccer. Soccer greats from Pelé to Zico - all who credit futsal as
being crucial to their their own skills development.
With this opportunity to showcase New England Futsal to tens of
thousands of attendees at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts
we hope to continue to light the fire and passion for the game of
Futsal here in Massachusetts & New England.
