I agree. Post accident analysis is a useful thing to do . Even it it only
prevents a few accidents every little bit helps. I don't think Gene was
trying to assign blame at all, just had some observations, good ones, and
I'm very glad we got the details, simply because now we know what happened
and know what to look out for next time. As James says shit happens, my
guess is that Joe hit the manhole cover with his head and that is what
caused all the bleeding. Since a manhole cover is about 16 inches in
diameter, 8 inches one way or another and maybe he wouldn't have been as cut
up. Or not, who knows. Frankly after 26 years of this on and off it seems to
me the worst accidents, though few and far between , happen to the better
riders. Such is life.

Alpinists the world over, the Appalachian Mountain Club, motor racing
teams and many others reconstruct accidents so that everyone can learn
from them. This is good healthy stuff and makes for great reading.
Not once did i interpret the remarks to suggest that Tom was a bonehead.
Shit happens, even at the most experienced levels.
I would like to encourage these kinds of discussions more often,
especially in this very civil manner. Maybe some of you dont realize
what a way with words you actually have and how informative they can be.
