For the cat 5 Rfk race I ended coming in 6th out of 32. It was a pretty boring race because it had no hills and it just came down to

FYI. Junior Nationals will be in Orange County, CA, August 6-11. I'll
begin looking into plans for locations and logistics (e.g., bike shipping).
For planning purposes, 10-14 year juniors can race without
pre-qualification. 15-18 year olds need to be at least Category 3.

All good fun and games...except to be noted is that coach Sue Hefler will be leading her HPC powered by Altarum team into the women’s pro race at the Clarendon Cup. Also, Evan Fader and his Battley Harley team will be the only amateur team invited to race in the invitational pro race later in the day.

Sunday is a must see -- the CSC Invitational -- in Clarendon, Virginia (ride

Pretty awesome lineup is summarized by the attached PDF. More information

$1,000 from the event; we'll make it up in another manner.
Anyway, if you go, you'll see lots of stars and bars/red and white all

The NCVC Juniors website -- http://www.ncvc.net/juniors -- has been updated
with links to a couple additional races:
On Saturday, June 7, we have WWVC's Ride Sally Ride criterium -- this is the
next Juniors-classed event in our area.
http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=6446 ... Ride Sally Ride
is the successor to The Quicksilver held in prior years. It less
complicated than Bike Jam (smaller and closer by), but lots of fun.
On Sunday, June 15, we have DRT's Jason Gundel Classic in Wilmington,
Delaware. Also Junior classed, Wilmington is a very attractive venue:
http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=6632
It seems folks are getting what I'd call "crit fever" in the NCVC Junior
group. Steve Black, having read about yesterday's Bike Jam confab while
sunning at Virginia Beach, got itchy feet. He and family are driving up to
Somerville, NJ, to take on the powers in tomorrow's classic:
http://www.tourofsomerville.org/monday/race.htm ...
Speaking of itchy fit, a learning opportunity I saw at yesterday's race was
that it pays to "rest up and warm up." Some members of our cohort rode hard
at Friday night's Hains Point lap session, and found sore and wore-out legs
in Saturday's morning race. Go easy the day or two before you race. The
second bit of learning is to warm-up. For a crit like Bike Jam, you will
help yourself deliver your best by warming-up for at least 30 minutes before
the start-time. (Use a portable mag or air trainer if there isn't a
rideable warm-up area.) In warming-up, you open your body, lungs and blood
vessels for the race. So, when you hit the start line and mash your pedals,
you're not thrown into a nauseating shock. Recall that when you watch the
top-guns race, they are always on their trainer well before the race.
Anyway, good job by all. Next Sunday is the spectator friendly CSC
Invitational in Clarendon (Arlington, VA). NCVC will have a few riders in
the morning races -- Zack, Nathan, Steven? -- and the big-ticket pro race
starts at 12:15 PM ... http://www.cscinvitational.com/ ... The event is
bigger than Bike Jam and usually gets national cycling press/TV coverage.
Enjoy,

Pretty good day at the office for NCVC's rollicking juniors cohort. At Bike
Jam in Baltimore, Justin Mauch pulled down first place in J10-14, on a flyer
and long pull-lead by 15 y.o. Chris Abbey. (Great work, J-stine! Thanks,
Chris.) 14 year-old Steven Kendall (racing age 15) grabbed 3rd in J15-18.
More, 18 year-old Zack Allison, who will be 19 in December and thus now
races as an "adult" -- a member of NCVC's Elite squad -- grabbed podium in
the Cat 2/3 event. Zack is a (distinguished!) alum of NCVC's junior
program. Ever faster, Zack!
We had an incredible cohort at the J10-14 and J15-18 line (almost matching,
I think, the wonderfully swelling Artemis U19 squad). First time racer Andy
Mount did his new red-and-white stars and bars jersey proud, finishing a
strong ten-miler in the general J10-14 milieu (morass). Welcome Andrew!
Cherish the pain. We also saw strong efforts by our own Brookes Brothers
(Andrew and David -- no grey flannel), Joey (the beast) Springer, Avery
(chillaxin) Wilson, Aidan (it ain't over yet) Fitzpatrick, Troy the Torch
Allison, and Tommy Top-Gun Kiernan. A wonderful squad, and wonderful
parents who laughed, cheered and helped calm the chaos -- only three trips
for Mavic neutral support, I think, to get one past roll out ...
Late reports coming in indicate post-U19 Kendallista, Bradley, did very well
in the Cat 4 finale at Bike Jam. Steven Kendall also was a strong contender
in the 4 race -- that is until his bars became unglued, and he slid to the
back doing massive wrist exercises.
Up north -- well, in Somerville/Bound Brook/whatever New Jersey -- 17 y.o.
Nathan Wilson rode very strong in his first of three crits this weekend.
Today's event, "The Hall of Fame Criterium," was a duke out among the top
east cost juniors from Can-Am (and more). (Nate rode on the North East
regional team -- per grant by TD Lindeman.) A two-person break (Colavita?)
won the day, with Filip (Team Polska) Capala grabbing the field sprint for
third. Nathan finished behind Filip. The good news was Nate seemed to be
marked; every attack he made unsettled the pack and got chased down ...
That's what he gets for winning the points preme at Can-Am. Tomorrow, its
the Bound Brook crit and Monday is Somerville ... May he keep the rubber
side down (and spinning most rapidly).
Thanks, also, to NCVC for broad support. Friday's Hains Point juniors ride
-- last night -- was an awesome swarm of Elite team members partnering in
amongst the U19 beasts. Cheers,
Jim Wilson

The RFK criterium, Sunday, doesn’t have a U19 event, but may be fun to watch. It runs on the former Lemans race car course, north of the stadium. Information/registration: http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=5908
A couple area juniors (including Nathan) will be in a series of national-level races in and about Somerville, NJ -- http://www.tourofsomerville.org/ ... Best of luck to them.
Other NCVC Juniors are off to the beach or “chillaxing” this weekend. Weather will be great. Enjoy,

Many, many thanks to Bob Cary of Skylands Cycling for bringing this event

Subject: Re: NCVC U19 -- Another great Can-Am weekend
After pulling hairs out of his first case of road rash, Aidan shaved
his legs last night, saying, "I don't want to go through that again."
(Note the important word in that sentence: 'again'.) And then he asked
me if there is another race this weekend!
I wanted to express my gratitude to Pierre, Jim, the race officials at
Can-Am, all the members of NCVC and all the other teams' riders who
came up to Aidan and encouraged him to get back in the Crit. Even
though it wasn't a really bad scrape(s) as these things go, there
wasn't a hint of guilt-trip or 'be-a-man' posturing we're used to from
little league. Every single person had a 'we've been there, we know it
hurts but wouldn't it be great if...' attitude that Aidan heard
clearly. I don't think it would have worked had it come only from Dad.
Thanks again to everyone for helping.

Steven would not have made 2nd place were it not for the expert coaching of Coach Pierre. Three cheers for Coach Pierre.
Thanks again

Subject: [ncvc-jrs] NCVC U19 -- Another great Can-Am weekend
NCVC's Junior squad had another great Can-Am U19 Challenge -- a nationally
recognized (high USAC points), three event omnium in Sussex County, NJ. The
series featured about 100 U19 riders from the East and Midwest and overseas.
NCVC J10-12 year olds Aiden Fitzpatrick, Brett Hugel and Troy Allison
hammered their way through all three events, posting personal bests in the
Sunrise Mountain TT, Skyland Park criterium, and Sussex Fairgrounds circuit
race. Aiden demonstrated particular courage, charging on to complete the
criterium after a copping a plateful of road rash.
In J13-14, we were unrepresented at Can-Am -- Justin Mauch and Avery W.
spent Sunday grabbing 1-2 at the Southern Maryland Crit. (Major props to
the guys ...)
In J15-16, Steven Kendall rode very strongly, grabbing 4th place GC, in a
ragingly competitive field. Chris Abbey turned in the race of his life in
today's circuit, riding with Steven and helping him push out the front.
In J17-18, Nathan Wilson and Steve Black see-sawed GC top-slot contention.
Nathan won a points premium with a brilliant solo break at mid-point of the
Circuit race. This put him in GC first place. He was then marked, and
couldn't get away again for the finish. Steve Black shot through in the
pack sprint, and boosted himself to grab 2nd place GC, behind GC #1 Filip
Capala, Team Polska's Brooklyn powerhouse.
For the first time in four years, NCVC won team podium at Can-Am. NCVC
Juniors won third place overall to the much larger Young Medalist (1st) and
Colavita (2nd) juniors squads. We got a cool trophy -- pictures to follow.
Many thanks to the riders who worked hard in every event and, especially to
the parents, who clocked upwards of 700 miles to and through the wilds of
southern New York and northern New Jersey. We are also grateful for the
talented and very helpful coaching and support of HPC's Pierre Pelletier,
our U19 coach who joined us at Can-Am, as well as to (former USCF President
and cycling legend) Mike Fraysse, who is helping our top U19 guns advance in
national and international venues.
Next weekend, Somerville, Bike Jam, RFK and more ... Keep 'em rolling.

Following is the start list for tomorrow morning's Can-Am time trial.
You should arrive at the TT 90 minutes before your start time, get your
number from registration, pin-on your number, check your equipment, and
warm-up (on a trainer, if possible) for 45-60 minutes before your start.
Pierre will be on site to help newcomers in start technique.
Thank you,

>Next weekend, May 17-18, is the 2008 Can-Am U19 Challenge, a three-event
omnium held in Sussex County, New Jersey. This is consistently the favorite
race of the year for NCVC Juniors -- big fields, wonderful courses, lots of
fun with teammates. I'm writing to provide information and to get a head-
count for who will be attending so I can finalize hotel reservations, and
participants can plan and coordinate.

>The basic program is we drive-up and overnight in a hotel (see below) Friday.
(Families typically drive themselves; some folks car pool.) We do a time
trial up Sunrise Mountain starting early Saturday morning. You should be at
the time trial 90 minutes before your start time — e.g., 7:30 AM. After
lunch
Saturday, we do a criterium at a cool, minor league ball park. We have a
rollicking team dinner Saturday night. (We overnight in same hotel.) On
Sunday morning, we have a circuit race at the Sussex County fairgrounds — very
beautiful, cool. We do awards (NCVC’s Zack Allison won 17-18 year old GC
(general classification, top champion) last year.) Then we head home Sunday
afternoon/evening.

Looks like everything is on course for our race weekend. Please don’t forget to print out the race manual (see below). The manual has event directions, schedule times, and other key information.
Since I’m taking Nathan to a pre-race camp in New York, I am spending Friday night at the Comfort Inn, Port Jervis, NY. Russ Allison has kindly volunteered to serve as the go-to veteran Friday night and Saturday morning, for advice, velo-ruminations, and help as needed. Pierre and I will meet everyone at the time trial, about 7:30 AM Saturday morning. (TT start times should be posted tomorrow AM, as described by the race manual.)
Key Cell Phone numbers are:
Russ Allison — 703.772.5943
Pierre Pelletier — 703.732.8352
Jim Wilson — 571.239.6772
Please email Russ with your cell phone number so he can call you if needed. Russ’s email is: russ_allison@....
Remember to pack a rain jacket. Look forward to all your efforts. Regards,
Jim

Hello. I wanted to provide an update on Can-Am. This is going to be a great event. Coach Pierre Pelletier will be joining us for three great races, and we’ll have many opportunities to learn, excel and have fun. (It may be rainy; please bring a rain jacket suitable for a bike race (e.g., a plastic jacket from Performance or Spokes).)
Following are planned participants and hotel information. Details from the original message are at bottom. Please email or call me if you are not on this list and wish to attend, or if information on this list is wrong.
Note, as stated below, you must pre-register online for Can-Am.

Next weekend, May 17-18, is the 2008 Can-Am U19 Challenge, a three-event omnium held in Sussex County, New Jersey. This is consistently the favorite race of the year for NCVC Juniors -- big fields, wonderful courses, lots of fun with teammates. I'm writing to provide information and to get a head-count for who will be attending so I can finalize hotel reservations, and participants can plan and coordinate.
The basic program is we drive-up and overnight in a hotel (see below) Friday. (Families typically drive themselves; some folks car pool.) We do a time trial up Sunrise Mountain starting early Saturday morning. You should be at the time trial 90 minutes before your start time — e.g., 7:30 AM. After lunch Saturday, we do a criterium at a cool, minor league ball park. We have a rollicking team dinner Saturday night. (We overnight in same hotel.) On Sunday morning, we have a circuit race at the Sussex County fairgrounds — very beautiful, cool. We do awards (NCVC’s Zack Allison won 17-18 year old GC (general classification, top champion) last year.) Then we head home Sunday afternoon/evening.
It is about a six hour drive to the venue. I have reserved seven rooms at the Holiday Inn Express in Newton-Sparta, about at the center of the three venues. Here are long and tiny URLs to the hotel:

I am going to be traveling this weekend and we are a little compressed in the Wilson household at the moment (Care is helping provide 24x7 support at GW). Please exchange notes/questions. You may wish to collaborate/car pool. Veterans — Allisons, Barrs, Blacks, Kendalls, Mauchs, others — please feel free to chip in more information.
As a note, you will see on BikeReg that registration looks a bit low. I think this is because Colavita is an organizing sponsor, and they are registering all their racers directly. Colavita usually brings 30-50 juniors — the team “that ate New Jersey” ...
If this looks like the event for you, please register and confirm with me. If you have questions, email this list, try my cell phone or another team family. I will allocate a hotel room to folks who confirm they will attend. (The Barrs made reservations ahead of me at the Holiday Inn Express — their recommendation. Thank you!)
We had a beautiful day for our Jittery Joe's Swag sale at Crystal City on May 4. Our tent was located right across from the finish line and a little closer to the action than last year, resulting in a little more traffic. After arriving at 6:30 AM and setting up our three-legged tent, Jim and I hit-up the Starbucks. The fundraiser ride started at 7 AM. This did not bring in a lot of business, so the highlight of the early morning hours was watching the Saab vendors park and reposition the cars on display across from us several times. As the pro race started, more people filled the area and our sale started to pick up a good bit more speed. About mid-race the dignitaries were on display on the stage -- we had our tent checked out by the bomb-sniffing dog before the Air Force General arrived on the scene; Miss Virginia was there (Jim said his telephoto lens came in handy for this important moment!). The pro race had an exciting finish, medals were awarded by Miss Virginia, and people cleared pretty quickly, so we were able to pack up and go by about 2 or 3.
Hope you enjoyed my version of a race report!
: )
Our total take was $538.00, netting about $300.00 to continue important support for our cycling Juniors!
Special thanks to Tom Kendall who helped out for several hours in the morning, Scott and Aiden Fitzpatrick who helped in the afternoon.
Correction, that’s Steve Black who will be racing, not Patrick. Jim
