Overlooking the spelling error in the report below, Jason Meidhof and NCVC are credited with the only successful multi-lap breakaway during the Ephrata criterium. A sixth place team finish against the likes of Toyota United and Rite Aid, and a seventh place overall for Paul Mica -- not too shabby guys, not too shabby at all. Weesuns be mighty proud!

Pro 1,2,3 Men Report from Criterium by Brent Kametz
The pro/elite men were the final racers of the day. 50 of the East Coast?s swiftest cyclists, professionals, former professionals, and amateurs aspiring to the professional ranks, toed the line for the 31 lap finale. Racing was fast from the word go. Luis Secreto (Team Human Zoom) and Josh Frick (Clean Currents/Don Beyer Volvo) stretched out the racers for two laps as they stayed four seconds off the front of the group.
Several riders tried to get something going, including Lancaster school librarian Andy Wulfkuhle (C3/ADG). However, the peloton was intolerant of any attempt to break away. The race?s pace was never slow, but lap times averaged about 1:32. This pace was around ten seconds slower than last year?s average times and may have been due to the course?s direction being run counter-clockwise instead of clockwise as in previous years.
Riders such as Ryan McKinney (Team Clean Currents), Mike Stubna (GPOA/Meredith Group), Clayton Barrows (Rite Aid), and Ramon Benitez (Immediate Mortgage/Artemis) were active in taking turns leading the racers past the start-finish line as the laps ticked away. From under his helmet, the flowing locks of Millersville University?s Brad Viera (Rite Aid) could be seen regularly setting the tempo at the front of the race.
With breakaway after breakaway thwarted time after time, the race was clearly destined for an exciting field sprint. Jason Midhoff (NCVC/Inova Health Systems) made one last effort to solo away from the rest with seven laps to go. His scant advantage of 5 seconds grew to 7 at the start of the next lap. Unfortunately for him, the charging chasers had trimmed the lead back to 5 seconds with 5 to go. Bobby Lea (Toyota United) led the group as they swallowed up Midhoff with just over four circuits left to race.
Over the final three laps the pace continued to increase as teams looked to put their sprinters into position for the rush to the line. Rite Aid, GPOA/Meredith Group, and Immediate Mortgage/Artemis all came to the fore in hopes of dictating the finish.
As in most of the previous races, the first rider through the final turn was the first rider across the line. Clayton Barrows sprinted to the win convincingly over Jared Babik and Ryan McKinney. Unlike Saturday?s sprint finish in Farmersville, Barrows kept to the straight and narrow of his sprint line and was not relegated from the first position. Redemption and victory were his.

Tour de Ephrata, Ephrata, PA ˆ Men's Cat 4
Road race, TT, Crit
Riders: Karl Anderson, Alex Butterfield, Chris Newport and, Nate Wilson
Saturday's road race Road Race:
There were a number of factors outside of the race that effected the
outcome. Many of the 4's had to pass numerous ambulances on the way
into the course and numbers of bloody riders in the parking lots did
not help to calm anyone's nerves. With all of the prior accidents,
our race was delayed and cut one lap short. Most riders sat at the
start line waiting for over twenty minutes. Because the nervous
energy was not enough, another ambulance rolls off for another crash
right before the race. Our race stated with about 108, cooled down,
jumpy CAT 4's. I only saw one accident there may have been more but
the near misses were constant. We rolled the course, and most would
agree that wasn't practically taxing with short surges here and there.
The last lap the pace picked up ˆ I had moved back to about 20th near
the yellow line and the rest of the team sat at around 10th with good
positions in the middle and on the right. With a Kilo to go there was
a strong move on the left, which I went with and was pulled to the
front. The right seemed jammed up all of a sudden with Carl, Chris,
and Nate blocked behind it. The Kilo move died and I was stuck out in
the wind on the center line with 650 to go. I waited for something to
come around to latch onto from the left, but it never did ˆ the far
right side broke open, but it was too far for me to cross. At about
300, the right was moving fast and with no more options for a ride, I
put my head down, stared at the yellow line and left everything on the
road. I came across 6th. The team finish solid but frustrated from
being blocked out of the mix.
Sunday TT:
That hill is no joke ˆ 29 seconds here would have got me on the GC
podium as it was I finished 16th. Nate finished 26th. Chris and Carl
too 32nd and 41st without TT bike.
With the nerves finally shaken out this race cooked from the gun.
Nate was mixing it up with attacks and chases early and often. Hands,
down he deserves the most aggressive rider jersey seriously, I think
he was out of the saddle more than he was on it. Chris was cruising
at the front while Carl was patrolling the top 10. I sat on Carl and
Chris the entire race. The race was fast and seemed to only barely
slow down in laps 13 through 16. It started to rev up again at with
four to go and the tempo ramped up all the way to the finish lap. On
the last lap, Chris was about 4th wheel, I jumped to him and took my
last break as he pounded to about three quarters of the way. I jumped
right before the last corner and it pretty much stayed together. A
sprint lane never opened up in the small group so I held my position
until we crossed the line. I came in 6th
We finished strong every race and no one ever gave up. I finished 6th
in the GC thanks to everyone's hard work.
And Matt Klise came in first in the Greenbrier Beginner Junior 17-18, which (to
our surprise) also doubled as the state championship race. Small field, but
we'll take it!

The Sport Legs work well for me. They help flush or build up (I'm not sure which) the lactic acid in you're legs. That is supposed to help with cramping. Like anything else what might work for some may not work for others. I'll give you a few next time we ride and you can see if they work for you.
I have had cramping issues since I first started racing. I know hydration and nutrition have a major roll with the cramps. Also I think that some of it has to do with tightening the leg muscles up to correct for bad form or bad lines as you're still trying to torque on the pedals. I find that’s when I have the most problems with it. Last year at the Marriottsville enduro event I cramped early and hard. All due to bad pre-race hydration and nutrition. Out of pain and frustration I decided to put it in a harder gear to see what would happen. Low and behold it worked, I was able to work the cramps out and keep racing. After that anytime I felt a twinge in my legs I put it down one gear until the cramps went away. Although it wasn't the best finish (twelfth overall) I don't think I would have been able to keep going had I not tried that. It seems to me that when you're spinning easy the muscles are loose and prone to cramping. The harder gear keeps the legs tight. I'm not sure if this makes sense but it has worked for Gordon and I. If anybody has any ideas on who to cope with it better I would greatly appreciate the advice.
I raced marathon at the Greenbrier Challenge today. The format was 5+ mile loops of hills, rocks, mud and some jeep trails for 4+ hours. Having never done this before, I made up a food plan consisting of:
I ate: * 1/2 to a whole PB&J sandwich for each of the first few laps (Thank you Terri and 24 Solo's Chris Eatough for that idea) - three sandwiches consumed * 1 pack (six blocks) of Cliff Cubes with caffeine each lap - ate a total of six packs (I'm still buzzing nine hours later) * 1 large water bottle of Gatorade diluted one to one with water - total seven
My energy level was great. I felt tired but not bonked after spending 4.5 hours on the bike. The problem was that after about 2.5 hours, when I hit the gas hard, I started cramping. This got progressively worse until it was pretty much continuous by the finish.
Anyone have any ideas? I don't think that I could comfortably eat or drink more volume. Does Hammer Gel work? Has anyone tried Sport Legs? Too much caffeine?
Whoa! (I can't keep up with the great results from Juniors this weekend.)
Great work, Jennifer!

Hi Everyone,
Jennifer Lewis won at Greenbrier yesterday and is now
the Md. State champ. She beat her time by 5+ minutes
from last year. She'll be going to Nationals in July. NCVC
Steven raced the Snowball Criterium in Virginia Beach Today. He was the only Junior in a field of 36 and spent most of the race in the center 1/3 of the pack. He was too tired, after a 70 mile ride to North Carolina and back in the morning, to pull the pack. Steven started the last of the 30 laps in 10th position, and sprinted his way to the front over the .6 mile lap to take Second Place in a "photo finish".
Looking forward to next weekends Bunny Hop.

Folks, I recommend you stand by the keyboard to get into the Cat 3/4/5
events at The Quicksilver (Juniors shouldn't be a problem). Registration
opens this Wednesday, 9:30 PM. The registration link is:
http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventID=4724
Also, the Wednesday evening Greenbelt Training Race Series starts this week.
This is a fun course and good all-summer event (with a couple exceptions
noted on the flier). Commute is a challenging from VA (rush hour traffic),
but otherwise it's pretty cool.
Register: http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=4730
Race Flier: https://www.usacycling.org/events/getflyer.php?permit=2007-875
I've updated a few schedule/info links on our website:

Folks need to make their own room reservations for the Can-Am Challenge, held May 20-21, in Sussex County, NJ.
There are quite a few options. The Wilson and Allisons have booked rooms at the Appalachian Hotel at the Mountain View Resort. We encourage you to book here, if you’d like to have a big team dinner or such. The hotel is describe at: http://www.mountaincreek.com/lodging/rooms/appalachian/index.htm -- This is the same resort area we stayed at last year (except last year we rented slope-side condos).
I apologize that this is a bit pricey (but it is easy ... swimming pool, hot tub, kitchens, etc.) You can find additional lodging options described in the Can Am race manual ( http://www.skylandscycling.com/canam07/manual.pdf ) or by hitting Travelocity, http://www.vrbo.com, or the main Mountain Creek web site.

Hey Jim I just wanted to send you my race report for the baker's dozen this past weekend
I would first off like to say that the race was awesome, there was a huge turnout of NCVC racers and a three man team even took first in their category.
I was racing a duo-team with my long time friend and new NCVC junior racer, Joe Dombrowski. I started the race by doing the first lap. The race started fairly chilled out and I went into the woods in third. The coarse first went through the pine tree section, and had a few fun drops in it. IT then opened up into a field section that even after 13 hours of riding never seemed to get any smoother. Then into the woods switchbacks, by here I was warmed up and the race went by very quickly and consisted of a few more drops, whoops, and rock rides. I came through the finish and traded off smoothly.
We were turning very fast laps but started to feel it after we both had done about five laps a piece. The closer it got to night though, the better we seemed to feel. The night laps seemed to go very quickly and we were turning 40 minute laps.
I just wanted to give you a feeling for how the coarse was but its kinda hard to write a lap by lap description of a 13 hour race.
In the end Joe and I ended up taking 3rd place in the duo team. And I think I mentioned that NCVC took the first place in the three man team. Joe will be someone to watch out for in the future even though he is mostly into mtn bike racing I believe he is still planning on doing some road racing.
I’m looking for somebody from our area (Arlington, DC, nearby MD) who’s going to race at Greenbrier this Sunday ( http://potomacvelo.com/GreenbrierChallenge.htm ). I want to give a jersey to a great new Junior, Joe Dombrowski, who’s been racing with Matt Keiper.
I have a jersey for Joe; if you let me know you’re going to Greenbrier, I’ll arrange to drop it by with you today or Saturday so you can hand it to Joe Sunday.
Thank you in advance!

Safety Education Program Manager,
Washington Area Bicyclist Association
In keeping with its mission to promote safe bicycling throughout the Washington region, the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) is pleased to announce that it has scheduled four remaining Confident City Cycling Classes for the rest of the summer season. The classes, which are free and open to the public, are designed to provide cyclists with the skills they need incorporate bicycling into their daily routines. The three-hour classroom session teaches the basics of bicycling on city streets for errands, commuting, and fun. The principles of lane positioning will be explained, along with techniques for avoiding some of the more common hazards. As time allows, bicycle fit and maintenance, emergency repairs, gearing and pedaling, nutrition, and accessory equipment will be covered.
”As weekend cyclists contemplate taking the next step to using their bikes on city streets, this class can provide much-needed help. It’s a great idea to get there by bike and transit, and to discover the city’s diverse system of Parks and Recreation Centers at the same time. Let’s begin the process of dealing with global warming one pedal at a time.” says Dorcas Adkins, WABA’s Manager of the Safety Education Program.

It is always a nice thing to do to ask people if they need help on the trail, but in this case, I really think that people didn't see Ann Ipsen, and that she is making a big deal about nothing. Maybe she was in a bad mood that day or something, but its silly that she would post a stupid email tp the NCVC list serve (and not the juniors list) about the "rude" jrs team not stoping their competitive group ride to ask if she needs help with her tire.
Next time, whoever it is just ask them for help so that they dont make an unnesessary big deal about nothing again.
In a recent change of plans I will be in town this Friday. Meaning I will
be leading the Friday night Haine's point ride. I just plan on riding
really easy all are welcome. Meet at the parking lots at the tennis court
at Haine's Point at 6:00pm. We will ride till people want to stop or it
gets dark.

Greg Abbott had a double flat at Carl Dolan last Sunday and needs his tubies repaired pronto (those damn pot holes).
I've located a service in FL that completely unhems tubulars and resews a new tube (valve length to your specs) into the tire and reglues a new seam strip back on. Price for 1 or 2 tires is around $25/ea. Price for 3 or more tires is around $17 with premium racing tube and long valve, including S&H both ways.
Last fall, I coordinated this for the club and we repaired 11 tubies - testimonials from Bill Luecke and Jeff Taggart. If you have tubulars that need a top-drawer overhaul, please coordinate with me for the quantity discount. I will ship promptly on Wednesday, May 2. If we don't reach critical mass, then Greg will use the service on his own.
Note: TUFO tires have no seams and cannot be repaired via this service. All other true "sew-ups" can be repaired.
Well, the youngest NCVC Junior (Troy Allison), did recognize you, and did stop on Walter Reed Drive near Shirlington yesterday, but got the cold shoulder. Something about, "Can't stop now, gotta go!" Troy is seeing a counselor to overcome his rejection depression after Ephrata. He's also ratting to his older brother not to be nice to that Ipsen lady anymore on Tuesday night sprints.

Ooops ... I'm sorry. The Juniors should have at least asked, if not stopped ... when you saw them, they were on a coached training ride with HPC, probably in competitive mode, thinking about the Hunter Station hill repeats and Glade springs which lay ahead, and the work at Carl Dolan and Ephrata. During school season, these rides start at Spokes/Vienna at 4:30 pm. We (HPC, NCVC) try to get the guys back for dinner and homework by 6:30 PM ... It's a pretty intense; yesterday, they started late ...
I'm sorry the guys breezed by. I hope you were able to change your tire okay or another cyclist helped. I"ll ask they guys what happened.

Yesterday on my bike commute home from Herndon to Alexandria, my rear tire got a flat. I was changing my flat on the path about a 1/2 mile West of the Vienna Spokes. A big team of NCVC juniors rode by (heading West) and not a one of them asked me (dressed in my NCVC jersey) if I needed help. Jeesh! Where's the love?!
BTW, I always ask other cyclist if they need help if they are working on their bike, regardless of whether or not they are NCVC. I even helped a guy change his tire one time.

Here are some pictures and slideshows from today’s Carl Dolan race, and the April 1 Tyson’s Corner Circuit Race (some folks said they missed that set). If it’s helpful, you may be able to pick the P123 finish order from the last couple Carl Dolan slides (the official’s camera failed today).

Just thought I'd give everyone the lowdown on what is
hapenning this week.
First off Sue Hefler is going down to help with the Tour of Va NRC
race so
we will be moving the Wednesday ride up to Tuesday. Same time 4:30 same
place Spokes, Vienna. The ride should be back to Spokes ~6:30. Wheels
will
roll promptly at 4:30 if you are running late roll down the bike path
to try
and meet us at Hunter Station for the repeats.
Also, there will be no Friday night at Haine's Point this week as I am
doing
the Tour of Ephrata next weekend and am leaving Friday night. If other
people want to do this ride feel free to post to the list.
Finally, there was a strong showing by the Juniors at Carl Dolan today.
Zack and I raced the 3/4 together basicly sitting in and waiting for
the
sprint. Zack pulled down 3rd in the Cat. 3's. I couldn't quite find
Zack's
wheel in the end but managed to pull down 9th in the 4's. Also, I think
Steven Black raced earlier in the day but I'm not sure how he did.
Steven,
are you out there?
Thanks,
Nathan

wheel in the end but managed to pull down 9th in the 4's. Also, I think
Steven Black raced earlier in the day but I'm not sure how he did.
Steven,
are you out there?
Thanks,
Nathan

Just thought I'd give everyone the lowdown on what is hapenning this week.
First off Sue Hefler is going down to help with the Tour of Va NRC race so
we will be moving the Wednesday ride up to Tuesday. Same time 4:30 same
place Spokes, Vienna. The ride should be back to Spokes ~6:30. Wheels will
roll promptly at 4:30 if you are running late roll down the bike path to try
and meet us at Hunter Station for the repeats.
Also, there will be no Friday night at Haine's Point this week as I am doing
the Tour of Ephrata next weekend and am leaving Friday night. If other
people want to do this ride feel free to post to the list.
Finally, there was a strong showing by the Juniors at Carl Dolan today.
Zack and I raced the 3/4 together basicly sitting in and waiting for the
sprint. Zack pulled down 3rd in the Cat. 3's. I couldn't quite find Zack's
wheel in the end but managed to pull down 9th in the 4's. Also, I think
Steven Black raced earlier in the day but I'm not sure how he did. Steven,
are you out there?
Thanks,
Nathan

The Weather looks really nice. So today is a perfect day to ride. We will roll from the tennis court's parking lot around 6:00 pm. If you get there and no one is there just wait until you see a group come around. Nathan

Subject: Re: [NCVC] mentoring for new racers?
One of my capacities as Team Director is just this sort of thing. I
think I've done pretty much all the local races over the years so I
can give some guidance where necessary.
My very first bike race was the Carl Dolan race (though back in 1998
it wasn't called that) and I have raced that course a zillion times.
Turkey Day used to be held there in fact. It is pretty similar to
Tysons, only about twice as big. It's a little more than 2 miles
around. There's an uphill section and a downhill section, and only 1
corner. So it is not terribly technical. Don't know why you've heard
not to do the race as a beginner; in fact it's a great course for
beginners as it is wide (2 full traffic lanes) and only has the one
corner. The start/finish is at the top of the hill, like Tysons. The
races generally roll around and conclude with a bunch sprint on the
last lap.
My advice to all the Cabruce camp graduates is to race as many
different events as you can, that's the best way to figure out what
you are good at and maybe not so good at. Don't be put off by reports
of this or that just because someone told you it "isn't safe" or
something. Racing is as safe as you make it; the more comfortable you
are in a hard-charging pack, the better. The best way to increase
your comfort level is of course to do more races.
Don't be afraid to ask questions. In a club this large, someone will
have an answer for you.

Patterson Park welcomes back BikeJam Festival and Races for 9th year on
May 26, 2007
BikeJam (www.bikejam.org) is the Mid-Atlantic's largest festival of
bicycling, and it returns to Patterson Park on May 26, 2007. This day
in the park is fun for the whole family. The
RecRide(http://www.bikejam.org/documents/2007_RecRide_FlyerWEB.pdf) is a
chance for any rider to enjoy city routes on Memorial Day weekend. The
Kelly Cup Bike Race, in Patterson Park , offers a full day of
competition for every level of racer. The Toyota Family Fun Fest area
and Carefirst helmet giveaway add to the fun.
The high point of the day is the Kelly Cup, an NRC race, with a Men's
and Women's Pro Races, featuring national and international racers. The
Men's race is a furious 40-lap race and the women race 20. The one-mile
road course is flat and fast but contains slight elevation changes and a
few turns to add to the excitement.
Now in its ninth year, BikeJam also features interactive games for the
kids, live music from local bands, food and beer, product sampling, a
bike stunt show and an expo with all the latest cycling gear. Admission
is free for the festival and race viewing. For schedule of events and

these are just some additions to Nate's list of team rides,
This Tuesday will be the sprint ride out of Spokes on Quaker Lane. This is a sprint ride and in the middle of the season has a good turnout but the more juniors that show up the more fun it will be. there are 7 sprints in total, and 3 of them are long sprints that will test ur pack riding and drafting skills. This ride and the thursday lap night ride at Hain's point are all for strong juniors only. The thursday lap night is at Hain's point in DC is just laps with the team. Nate rode it last thursday and said there were about 30 riders there which would make this a very good ride for pack riding and sprints. From the turn just past the awakening (the big half burried statue) the sprint starts. The point is likely going to be windy so this will also be a big test of your drafting and pack riding skills.
Both of these are for strong juniors and will help your sprinting and pack riding skill. These are two of the most important skills for the comming races. If you are racing Carl Dolan this weekend you might think about not doing thursday lap night or just going easy on it.
There are a couple rides we'll be doing this week.
First as usual the Wednesday ride will be leaving Spokes Etc. at 4:30 on
Wednesday. We will be back to Spokes ~6:30pm. The ride as usual will work
on hill climbing and sprints. However most likely we will do a time trial
instead of pacelining work. This ride is for 15-18 year olds and is a great
workout, let's have a good turn out!
Then on Friday we will be starting up the Hains Point ride. The ride will
meet at the tennis court parking lot at Haine's Point at 6:00. We will ride
till it starts to get dark or people want to start riding, meaning probably
around 7-7:30 pm. This ride is for all juniors. However I am planning for
it to be a fairly laid back ride, those who want to do their own thing and
go hard that is their choice. This ride will be just fun and a good time to
chill with your teammates also, there will be people there to answer any
questions. We'll see how the first ride goes but will likely later work on
some racing skills just not at high intensity, as we don't want to be doing
hard rides on Friday as the weekend is typically reserved for racing or big
rides and there is no point in wasting energy by going hard when it doesn't
matter. Most likely we will move on to a restaurant after the ride (maybe
california tortilla in clarendon?).
Nathan
P.S.- Stay tuned to the listserv in case we continue to get rain and the
ride needs to be cancelled.
