Eric finished 5th overall, and 3rd for the boys in the Junior's 10-12 race and was happy to represent NCVC even in his generic Voler jersey (maybe, after my results at Mt. Joy I can get some pointers from him!). But, more importantly, he had fun and wants to race some more so we certainly don't want to drop. If you still have a jersey I'd be happy to purchase it from you so he can visibly represent the team and our sponsors at his next event.

Thanks for the info. I noticed you included Eric as racing for the NCVC junior's squad at Mt. Joy. He thinks this is pretty cool and is proud to be considered part of the team. My only issue is that I didn't sign up for a family membership since he didn't race when I joined NCVC, and as I mentioned before it now turns out that we're moving from the area this summer. Consequently, he doesn't have a jersey so he can represent NCVC at Mt. Joy. I'd be happy to purchase a junior jersey for him, but don't want to step on any toes
since he is not technically a 'member' of NCVC. Standing by for any inputs you may have.

This is a weekly post of NCVC Juniors squad upcoming events and information. I’m going to be out of town next week, so there’ll probably be no message from me. Please use this list to exchange ideas, provide updates, share rides, etc. To join this list, if you’re not already a list member, follow instructions at http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/ncvc-jrs/.
COFFEE SALES First, extreme kudos to the Gaudaen family for masterfully running our sponsor Jittery Joe’s coffee sales at last weekend’s Tyson’s Circuit race. Thank you Larry, Jan, Steven and Jimmy. And also thank you Alex Lindeman for helping with sales. We made approximately $500. The funds will be used to help defer the costs of travel to out of District Juniors races — the Can-Am, Nationals, and perhaps others. There are several upcoming events where we will also have coffee sales — Poolesville, Bunny Hop, (later) Ed Sanders memorial — and perhaps others. Let me know if you can volunteer to help with coffee sales. If you’d like a case of coffee to sell (cans are $5, we sell them for $10), contact Pete Lindeman on this list, at pete@... or (703) 349-2344.
MOUNT JOY ROAD RACE The next prospective Juniors-grade race is the Mount
Joy Road Race in Pennsylvania, near Harrisburg. See the registration web site at http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?EventID=2960. Mount Joy is an out-of-district event (no MABRA points), but it looks like fun — a “5.7 mile circuit on well-maintained country roads.” It is also a Lance Armstrong Junior Olympic Series race, so medals are deep and you can earn LAJORS points. Juniors race 6-17 miles, depending on age. I think Eric Stratton, a new 10-14 junior, and Zack Allison are planning to race Mount Joy. Hit this list if you’d like to exchange information, share rides, etc.
WEDNESDAY AFTER SCHOOL TRAINING RIDE Our usual Wednesday after-school training ride with Sue Hefler will launch from Spokes/Vienna at 4 pm on April 12. As many of you know, this is a
very good session, with hill repeats, paceline work, sprint practice, etc. It is also quite taxing, with 2+ hours in the saddle. You should be a strong rider to participate. Nathan will be out of town; contact this list or Sue Hefler at shcoaching@... to confirm your participation or exchange notes.
FRIDAY RIDE W/ALEX HEYMANN As you saw from a previous note, Alex Heymann would like to organize a ride this Friday, April 7, with other Juniors. Contact this list or or Alex at alexheymann88@... to connect and do some training.
REGISTER FOR BUNNY HOP (LAJORS), BIKEJAM (LAJORS) You should register for two upcoming Juniors races — Bunny Hop in Suitland, MD, and BikeJam in Baltimore, MD. Both are in district races, and part of
the Lance Armstrong series. Bike Jam has a lot of other non-race stuff connected to it, e.g., longer touring rides in Baltimore. The registration sites are: Bunny Hop - http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=3225; BikeJam - http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=3336.
REGISTER FOR CAN-AM (LAJORS) You should register for the Can-Am U19 Challenge, to be held on May 20-21. This is an out-of-district event, about an hour from New York City. Register for the event at: http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?EventID=3091. Can-Am is a three-race omnium, with great venues. NCVC will provide partial
reimbursement for travel expenses, and I will be organizing a race caravan (transportation). Let me know if you plan to attend.
GREENBRIER CHALLENGE (MTB), WINTERGREEN ASCENT (LAJORS) Greenbrier is an age-graded mountain bike race over a challenging course, near Frederick, MD. Cyclocross Mentor and photo maestro Kevin Dillard will be there, as will Matt Keiper and other juniors. Register at: http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=3165. If you’ve got great legs (aerobically), you may want to consider the Wintergreen Ascent race, outside of Charlottesville, VA. It’s a 7-mile burner up the mountain, to the ski-area top finish. Register at: http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=3165 ...
Note: Wintergreen is on the same day as NCVC’s Poolesville race.
Okay, that’s a lot of information. Thank you very much for gluing together as a squad and riding so well. If you have spring break, find some time to get some good miles under your belt this week, to build endurance and strength for those madcap 30-minute crits and longer events. On April 21, we’ll begin Friday night training rides at Hains Point, 6-7 pm, weather permitting.
I’ve posted race reports at http://www.ncvc.net/juniors/ncvc_jr_results.html. These are informal write-ups; if I’ve missed something, made a mistake, or you’d like to file a report (please do), drop me an email.

I'll check with Pete (Pete ... please chime in) on the "formal" race report; there is something that you can use for race reimbursement. Basically, I'm interested in what Zack did, what he felt, what he saw, what he learned, what he thinks was important in determining his results -- nutrition, warm-up, tactics ... I'd like for our squad to be able to learn from Zack's experience. Matt Keiper and others have been filing some helpful race reports. I'm logging them, with some light editing, at http://www.ncvc.net/juniors/ncvc_jr_results.html ... this gives us a source for learning and review as we move on ... and it sets the stand for some bragging rights!
Zack, congratulations on the outstanding results!

p.s. -- Spain was awesome -- exceeding every expectation -- great rides, good accommodations, strong efforts by Nathan, Avery and Carolyn (and I lost 5 pounds!). I'll be putting up a training report/pictures in a couple days.

Hi Jim-- welcome back! How was the trip?
Zack had an exciting race day at Mount Joy. He took 3rd in the Cat 5 men's race, and 1st in the 17-18 Juniors (by about 5 and a half minutes!). What should he do about a race report? Isn't there a form or something? We are unsure what he's supposed to do.

Hi Susan and group,
Yes it is happening on May 6. It's posted on the NCVC website but not
as yet available on BikeReg. I'm not sure what the delay is, but my
guess is that there might be a small hitch or two they are waiting to
resolve before accepting registrations.

I'm not sure if this will help anyone out, but here's a link to my
public training profile. You can see actual workouts and logs. Note
that I commute by bike daily and use these as an opportunities to
train. It might give you an idea of an average training plan.
http://www.trainingpeaks.com/publicview.asp?p=billshelton
I made up a lot of the routines based on previous coaching with CTS
and Joe Friel's book. Some of the weight stuff, like Hindu Squats, I
do not do because they're hard on my knees. But I still do most of the
other stuff.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Subject: [ncvc-jrs] Juniors Training routines -- dialog
Folks,
I’ve had a few people ask me about training routines — what they should do as an NCVC Junior. My philosophy is that, for our developmental squad, training is self-directed: Set your goals, check your available time, and cycle as much as you can — low-intensity Zone 2 work for beginners, and more arduous effort as you advance. Some juniors go all out, and are working intensely with professional coaches. The Wednesday rides with Sue Hefler are samples of this type effort. Soon we’ll also have Tuesday night sprints and Friday Hains Point rides.
I recently forwarded a thoughtful email from Bill Shelton, a junior parent discussing his personal efforts, on the long-term perspective it takes to be an excellent racer. For myself, I recently had a VO2-max test to gauge my fitness and set a baseline for training. I’m at the start of my “season” — a few races, junior rides and centuries, and lots of riding/commuting to work. My fitness tested well, but I have a low aerobic threshold — my body doesn’t provide power very efficiently.
My coach told me to start Zone 2 program, where my heart rates is between 120-140 BPM. I am to do a four-week stair step cycle like this: Week 1 — ride 8 hours in Zone 2 (with occasional 20-minute bursts of Zone 3-4); week 2 — ride 9 hours; week 3 — ride 10 hours; Week 4 — ride 8 hours; followed by a four week cycle of 10-11-12-10 hours per week, then 12-13-14-12 hours per week. Then I’ll get re-tested, and set the next course.
As a junior, you may want to try something like this, perhaps starting with a 3-4-5-3:5-6-7-5:7-8-9-7 set of cycles. No matter what you do, I recommend that you log your daily/weekly activity and results working towards your goals. To help, you can buy a training log at a book store or bike shop, or you can sign-up for an online log via: http://www.fitness-concepts.com/NCVClog.htm (I find the web site log is sort of complicated).
What are your thoughts? What is the level of training you plan to take on?
Regards,
Jim

I will be out of town the weekend of
Poolesville and the Bunny Hop. Jan has agreed to handle coffee sales at the
Bunny Hop. It would be great if someone could take over for her and do an
afternoon shift. Selling water and soda later in the day worked out well. Somebody
else will have to handle the Poolesville race since we won’t be
available. That could be a fairly profitable day, if they get set up early at
the school.
As for profits at Tyson’s the
actual amount was around $275. The other $240 dollars were from Jimmy and
Steven selling cans of coffee on their own. I encourage other Junior team members
to sell some cans of Jittery Joes because the profits from those sales are
designated solely for the Junior Squad.
Hope you have a great time in Spain,
Larry

Upcoming Events, Coffee Kudos, Information, etc.
This is a weekly post
of NCVC Juniors squad upcoming events and information. I’m going to
be out of town next week, so there’ll probably be no message from me.
Please use this list to exchange ideas, provide updates, share rides, etc.
To join this list, if you’re not already a list member, follow
instructions at http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/ncvc-jrs/.
COFFEE SALES First,
extreme kudos to the Gaudaen family for masterfully running our sponsor
Jittery Joe’s coffee sales at last weekend’s Tyson’s
Circuit race. Thank you Larry, Jan, Steven and Jimmy. And also thank you
Alex Lindeman for helping with sales. We made approximately $500.
The funds will be used to help defer the costs of travel to out of
District Juniors races — the Can-Am, Nationals, and perhaps others.
There are several upcoming events where we will also have coffee
sales — Poolesville, Bunny Hop, (later) Ed Sanders memorial —
and perhaps others. Let me know if you can volunteer to help with
coffee sales. If you’d like a case of coffee to sell (cans are
$5, we sell them for $10), contact Pete Lindeman on this list, at
pete@... or (703) 349-2344.
MOUNT JOY ROAD RACE The
next prospective Juniors-grade race is the Mount Joy Road Race in Pennsylvania, near Harrisburg. See the registration
web site at http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?EventID=2960.MountJoy is an out-of-district event (no
MABRA points), but it looks like fun — a “5.7 mile circuit on
well-maintained country roads.” It is also a Lance Armstrong
Junior Olympic Series race, so medals are deep and you can earn LAJORS
points. Juniors race 6-17 miles, depending on age. I think
Eric Stratton, a new 10-14 junior, and Zack Allison are planning to race MountJoy. Hit this list if
you’d like to exchange information, share rides, etc.
WEDNESDAY
AFTER SCHOOL TRAINING RIDE Our usual Wednesday
after-school training ride with Sue Hefler will launch from Spokes/Vienna
at 4 pm on April 12. As many of you know, this is a very good
session, with hill repeats, paceline work, sprint practice, etc. It
is also quite taxing, with 2+ hours in the saddle. You should be a
strong rider to participate. Nathan will be out of town; contact
this list or Sue Hefler at shcoaching@... to confirm your
participation or exchange notes.
FRIDAY RIDE
W/ALEX HEYMANN As you saw from a
previous note, Alex Heymann would like to organize a ride this Friday,
April 7, with other Juniors. Contact this list or or Alex at
alexheymann88@... to connect and do some training.
REGISTER FOR
BUNNY HOP (LAJORS), BIKEJAM (LAJORS) You
should register for two upcoming Juniors races — Bunny Hop in
Suitland, MD, and BikeJam in Baltimore, MD. Both are in district
races, and part of the Lance Armstrong series. Bike Jam has a lot of
other non-race stuff connected to it, e.g., longer touring rides in Baltimore. The
registration sites are: Bunny Hop - http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=3225;
BikeJam - http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=3336.
REGISTER FOR
CAN-AM (LAJORS) You should register for
the Can-Am U19 Challenge, to be held on May 20-21. This is an
out-of-district event, about an hour from New York City. Register for the
event at: http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?EventID=3091.
Can-Am is a three-race omnium, with great venues. NCVC will
provide partial reimbursement for travel expenses, and I will be
organizing a race caravan (transportation). Let me know if you plan
to attend.
GREENBRIER
CHALLENGE (MTB), WINTERGREEN ASCENT (LAJORS) Greenbrier
is an age-graded mountain bike race over a challenging course, near Frederick, MD.
Cyclocross Mentor and photo maestro Kevin Dillard will be there, as
will Matt Keiper and other juniors. Register at: http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=3165.
If you’ve got great legs (aerobically), you may want to
consider the Wintergreen Ascent race, outside of Charlottesville, VA.
It’s a 7-mile burner up the mountain, to the ski-area top
finish. Register at: http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=3165
... Note: Wintergreen is on the same day as NCVC’s Poolesville
race.
Okay, that’s a
lot of information. Thank you very much for gluing together as a squad
and riding so well. If you have spring break, find some time to get some
good miles under your belt this week, to build endurance and strength for those
madcap 30-minute crits and longer events. On April 21, we’ll begin
Friday night training rides at Hains Point, 6-7 pm, weather permitting.
I’ve posted race
reports at http://www.ncvc.net/juniors/ncvc_jr_results.html.
These are informal write-ups; if I’ve missed something, made a
mistake, or you’d like to file a report (please do), drop me an email.
Ride safe ... Have
fun,
Jim

For myself, I recently had a VO2-max test to gauge my fitness and set a baseline for training. I’m at the start of my “season” — a few races, junior rides and centuries, and lots of riding/commuting to work.
MOUNT JOY ROAD RACE The next prospective Juniors-grade race is the Mount Joy Road Race in Pennsylvania, near Harrisburg.
As many of you know, this is a very good session, with hill repeats, paceline work, sprint practice, etc.
Both are in district races, and part of the Lance Armstrong series.
NCVC will provide partial reimbursement for travel expenses, and I will be organizing a race caravan (transportation).

If any fellow mountain bikers were thinking about going to Tsali this
weekend, but didn't want to do the 8 1/2 hour car ride by themselves,
you're in luck. Matthew and I are planning to leave Friday afternoon,
time is negotiable depending on your schedule. We have campground
reservations at Tumbling Waters Campground, which you're welcome to
share with us. Junior Expert race is at 1:30 Sunday afternoon.
We're looking for another person to help share driving and gas.

I was standing near the start finish watching the rest of the Tyson's
40+ race go by after withdrawing about half way through. I was
pondering my mistakes when I noticed a group of four with a good gap
off the front and a new member, Ron Sutherland, in the move. I was
immediately struck by that fact that at 63, Ron is not only 20 years
older than me, but outriding me and, at that time, most of the other
40+ racers. Could it be possible that he is physically superior,
having an 80+ VO2 Max or very high numbers of muscle fibers? Or was
Ron simply a really good racer? Scott Schwartz was kind enough to
invite me to lunch with Ron and his family after the race. Ron is
retired and lives in West Virginia, is a Cat2, has been racing a long
time, and trains a lot. Ok, he _is_ strong, training mostly in the
mountains, and even gets the attention of one Jay Moglia, his
neighbor. Ron recently won the 60+ category at this year's Jefferson
Cup and made a good showing in the 50+, too. At lunch, we discussed
the race and racing in general, but the conversation turned towards
life in WVA. I left feeling unsatisfied. I had to know how he does so
well. I wrote him an email as asked for advice on how to race. These
were his comments:
"In terms of reading a race, this is a minor skill, often not the
crucial skill, and usually something that i do poorly. The head wind
on the downhill back stretch ensured against the pack breaking for the
first several laps, and also indicated that moving to the front was
not important. Absolutely no one figured that out - certainly not me -
as we all worked hard to get to the front.
Racing results are like shopping - you buy what you want, but you have
to pay for it. If you wish only to come off the back, little training
is required. If you wish to finish in the main group, much more
training is required. If you wish to place and maybe win, several
years of very hard work is probably necessary. I did extensive weight
training, and extremely hard brutal miles for many, many years, to
have some successes. To be competitive you may require a long term
-multi-year, very hard training program where you train to exhaustion,
recover and then train again. After a few years of this, you may be
tough. That is what I did, and what others do. Some racers make wise
choices of their parents, but for the rest of us, extremely hard work
is the recipe. I have now been training full time for about the last
two years and cannot quite make the winning break in the 50 + class.
The winning 50+ guys probably came from cat 1 or 2 seniors, and have
been winning for more than 10 years. At this point, it appears that my
last 2 years of very hard training in the WV mountains is insufficient
to even place in these races. The best advice for almost every
aspiring racer is to lower your expectations and, if possible, just
enjoy the racing. For me, I'll try the nats, and otherwise, with my
discouraging results, I'll probably go back to riding for fun in the
WV mountains - maybe beat up on some tourists or so.
Ron"
I hope Ron sticks around and beats up on *us* instead - the tourists
would just see a cyclist blowing by them and not think twice.
Some pretty amazing race photos ... Jimmy, Jim, Nathan, Zack, Andrew, Rob, Matt, Tim, Avery, Justin, Michael ... Parents, too ... Almost everybody, I think. By Kevin Dillard, our ‘cross mentor.
From El Presidente ... Maybe you guys can think of another location for a
ride ... Fort Hunt Park (on the Mt. Vernon trail, about two miles before the
Mt. Vernon park/mansion) has a pretty good, 1.5 Km oval.
Go for it ...

Alex and Jim,
I'm not sure this week is a good week to start a Friday ride on Hains
Point. With the cherry blossoms still hanging around the Tidal Basis and
Hains Point, there are still a lot of tourists and traffic in that area.
That is one reason why I haven't announced the resumption of the Thursday
night lap nights we do in the spring and summer. I do a lot of riding on
the Point during the week, but have avoided it since the cherry blossoms
appeared. I would definitely advise waiting a week before something like
this is started.

I was thinking about organizing a ride on Friday around 6
30ish at hains point or anywhere else u think that is better for us juniors
to practice pace and attack maneuvers and some good bike handling skills. I
hope we can pull through with this, also i want to apologize for not being

Eric Stratton is a new 12 year-old Junior who lives in Prince William County. He is going to enter the Mount Joy race, next weekend. Will Wolfe, you live near Eric. If folks are interested in riding in PWC, contact Will (his dad Jim -- strrattons_n_va@...) or send a note to this list.
As you can see by the emails below, it might be cool for us to do some training rides in PW Forest, site of a pretty tough circuit/road race this summer. Also, maybe good for mountain biking.

AOK. We're going to try to do some training at Prince William Forest, as well. We've another junior -- Will Wolfe -- in Prince William County that was looking for closer-by opportunities to ride, and there's a race there this summer. Will also was looking for other juniors closer to his locale. I'll forward you contact info when I get to my home PC.

Jim,
Thanks for the info about the Haines Point rides. We'll definitely try and make them since Dad could use always use some laps as well! We're down near Quantico so it is a bit of a trip, but I participated in the Cabruce series this year so I know we can do the same for Eric.

Jim,
Thanks for your input, Pete did email me and I will talk with him about Eric. I really wish we could add Eric to the junior's list, however a major impediment is that we are moving to the Northwest part of the U.S. this summer. We'll only have been here one year (a lot shorter than we anticipated), but since we are a military family these moves are all too familiar. Its too bad for Eric because I think he'd enjoy the sport and I hope to continue it with him out west.
Thanks again,
Jim
