Also, a shout out to NCVC Juniors (U19) who (again) won the 10-14 and 15-18 MABRA Road BAR (best all-around rider) championships. More specifically, props to 14 year-old Andy Mount and 16 year-old Steve Kendall. These guys worked extremely hard, following the disciplined coaching from Sue Hefler.
Many thanks, also, to the MABRA community as a whole, many parents, teammates, officials and supporters that have helped shape our region into a flourishing zone for junior development.

Tom,
I'm sorry to learn that the 2009 USA Nationals U19 championships have been
scheduled before the end of the spring semester for many public and private
school riders in our the Washington, DC, area -- and presumably elsewhere.
Our juniors and alums grabbed a number of medals at the 2009 Natz ... We'd
like a good shot in 2010 as well. Is it possible to move Junior Nationals
into July or August?
Many thanks,
Jim Wilson

To: MABRA-USCF <mabra-uscf@googlegroups.com>
Just a friendly reminder that the infamous Bicycle Film Festival (www.bicyclefilmfestival.com) is coming to Washington DC on the weekend of December 4th and 5th!
In addition, there will be a screening of the Adventures for the Cure (http;//www.adventuresforthecure.com) documentary at Bicycle Stations, a new local bike shop located at 2204 14th St NW WDC on December 3rd at 7pm. Donations will be taken for Adventures for the Cure.
Some info on the Bicycle Film Festival: In 2001, Brendt Barbur, Founder and Director, was compelled to start the Bicycle Film Festival after being hit by a bus while riding his bike in New York City. Instead of being deterred by this experience, it inspired him to
create a festival that celebrates the bicycle through music, art, and film. Now in its ninth year the festival is held in 39 cities worldwide.
The BFF brings together many creative communities, including fashion, music and art as well as various bicycling communities including mountain biking, fixed gear, BMX, and road cycling - over a shared passion for bike riding.
Some films include a showing of Road to Roubaix, with a possible Q&A with the filmmakers, Where Are You Go (Cairo to Capetown by bike), and tons of amazing short films. Also we'll be showing one of the first looks at the new film, The Cyclocross Meeting, which explores the growing US Cyclocross scene as well as Barry Wick's time racing in Japan. A great way to get pumped up for the Reston UCI race the next day.
There will be parties, goldsprints (i'd personally like to see a few MABRA grudge matches settled here), alleycats, films, more parties, and of course - bikes, tons and tons of bikes. Check the below websites for more info, trailers, aup to date event announcements, and how to buy tickets.
Individual screenings are $8 and a fest pass is $20. Get your tickets early, as it's likely to sell out. The screenings are being held at the Navy Memorial Theater at 7th & Pennsylvania NW on December 5th. Did I also mention bike valet provided by WABA and the BFF is going to be provided at the screenings for free?
The BFF is coming to DC thanks to some great sponsors including Bicycle Stations, Hefler Performance Coaching, National Capital Velo Club, and the Washington Area Bicyclist Assocation.
If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, email chris@...
Fair warning, if the mayor attends expect there to be delays up to four hours as he runs red lights while
being escorted by Sherman tanks.
Folks, Here is a great, free coaching and training opportunity I encourage you to consider. This may not fit for very novice riders, folks who are not comfortable with a sustained 30-60 minute effort, but for all others, it is a wonderful opportunity to get the basics and mesh with your teammates.

The club's annual novice training ride series, aka the Cabruce rides,
will start on Sat Dec 5. The Cabruce name is a combination of our
founder's name (NCVC Life Member Bruce Oliver) and the railroad
caboose on the W&OD trail where we initially met to begin each ride.
Since its inception in 1995, the rides have always been designed to
teach the essential skills of bike racing to riders who really want to
learn. It is best suited to adults and stronger 15-18 year old
juniors. The clinics are paced to gradually build speed and intensity
over the winter. The skills learned are also scheduled to progress
from less intense (physically) to more intense as the racing season
nears. We finish the rides in early March to allow riders to apply
their new skills in the early training races.
The setup will be slightly different this year, the burden will not be
solely on Jeff's shoulders. We will spread the leadership of the
various weekly sessions around some of the club's experienced riders.
I will head up a couple, Andy Shaw (category 1 racer, USAC certified
coach) will lead a couple, and we will pull in session leaders from
the club whose skill set meshes with the day's planned activities.
We will switch locations from time to time but the primary spot will
still be Hains Point. (obviously we can't do the hill climbing session
there)
The schedule for the clinics will most likely look like this:
Clinic 1 - Pedal Stroke and position on the bike
Clinic 2 - Drafting and Pacelining
Clinic 3 - Change of Rotation Direction in Pacelines
Clinic 4 - One Leg Pedaling, Anticipating Gaps, Invisible Rider
Clinic 5 - Hill Climbing Technique
Clinic 6 - Bumping
Clinic 7 - Intro to Cornering
Clinic 8 - Blocking
While you are waiting for the clinics to start, be sure to check out
all the great documentation Jeff has compiled over the years on the
NCVC web site:
As far as training goes right now, it's the perfect time of year to be
riding for the pure fun of it. This weekend looks to be rain-free for
once, so be sure to get out and roll some miles while enjoying the
great fall weather.
