Tom,

I'm sorry to learn that the 2009 USA Nationals U19 championships have been
scheduled before the end of the spring semester for many public and private
school riders in our the Washington, DC, area -- and presumably elsewhere.

Our juniors and alums grabbed a number of medals at the 2009 Natz ... We'd
like a good shot in 2010 as well. Is it possible to move Junior Nationals
into July or August?

Many thanks,

To: MABRA-USCF <mabra-uscf@googlegroups.com>

Just a friendly reminder that the infamous Bicycle Film Festival (www.bicyclefilmfestival.com) is coming to Washington DC on the weekend of December 4th and 5th!

In addition, there will be a screening of the Adventures for the Cure (http;//www.adventuresforthecure.com) documentary at Bicycle Stations, a new local bike shop located at 2204 14th St NW WDC on December 3rd at 7pm. Donations will be taken for Adventures for the Cure.

Some info on the Bicycle Film Festival:
In 2001, Brendt Barbur, Founder and Director, was compelled to start the
Bicycle Film Festival after being hit by a bus while riding his bike in New
York City. Instead of being deterred by this experience, it inspired him to
create a festival that celebrates the bicycle through music, art, and film.
Now in its ninth year the festival is held in 39 cities worldwide. The BFF
brings together many creative communities, including fashion, music and art
as well as various bicycling communities including mountain biking, fixed
gear, BMX, and road cycling - over a shared passion for bike riding.

Some films include a showing of Road to Roubaix, with a possible Q&A with the filmmakers, Where Are You Go (Cairo to Capetown by bike), and tons of amazing short films. Also we'll be showing one of the first looks at the new film, The Cyclocross Meeting, which explores the growing US Cyclocross scene as well as Barry Wick's time racing in Japan. A great way to get pumped up for the Reston UCI race the next day.

There will be parties, goldsprints (i'd personally like to see a few MABRA grudge matches settled here), alleycats, films, more parties, and of course - bikes, tons and tons of bikes. Check the below websites for more info, trailers, aup to date event announcements, and how to buy tickets. Individual screenings are $8 and a fest pass is $20. Get your tickets early, as it's likely to sell out. The screenings are being held at the Navy Memorial Theater at 7th & Pennsylvania NW on December 5th. Did I also mention bike valet provided by WABA and the BFF is going to be provided at the screenings for free?

http://www.bicyclefilmfestival.com/?p=washington
http://roadthrash.blogspot.com/2009/11/bicycle-film-fest-is-coming-to-dc.html
check the above blog in the next few weeks for trailers on some of the films!
http://www.gamjams.net

The BFF is coming to DC thanks to some great sponsors including Bicycle Stations, Hefler Performance Coaching, National Capital Velo Club, and the Washington Area Bicyclist Assocation.

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, email chris@...

Fair warning, if the mayor attends expect there to be delays up to four hours as he runs red lights while being escorted by Sherman tanks.

Folks, Here is a great, free coaching and training opportunity I encourage you to consider.  This may not fit for very novice riders, folks who are not comfortable with a sustained 30-60 minute effort, but for all others, it is a wonderful opportunity to get the basics and mesh with your teammates.

Feel free to drop me or Pete a note if questions.

Subject: [NCVC] 2009-2010 Cabruce clinics

The club's annual novice training ride series, aka the Cabruce rides,
will start on Sat Dec 5. The Cabruce name is a combination of our
founder's name (NCVC Life Member Bruce Oliver) and the railroad
caboose on the W&OD trail where we initially met to begin each ride.
Since its inception in 1995, the rides have always been designed to
teach the essential skills of bike racing to riders who really want to
learn. It is best suited to adults and stronger 15-18 year old
juniors. The clinics are paced to gradually build speed and intensity
over the winter. The skills learned are also scheduled to progress
from less intense (physically) to more intense as the racing season
nears. We finish the rides in early March to allow riders to apply
their new skills in the early training races.

The setup will be slightly different this year, the burden will not be
solely on Jeff's shoulders. We will spread the leadership of the
various weekly sessions around some of the club's experienced riders.
I will head up a couple, Andy Shaw (category 1 racer, USAC certified
coach) will lead a couple, and we will pull in session leaders from
the club whose skill set meshes with the day's planned activities.

We will switch locations from time to time but the primary spot will
still be Hains Point. (obviously we can't do the hill climbing session
there)

The schedule for the clinics will most likely look like this:
Clinic 1 - Pedal Stroke and position on the bike
Clinic 2 - Drafting and Pacelining
Clinic 3 - Change of Rotation Direction in Pacelines
Clinic 4 - One Leg Pedaling, Anticipating Gaps, Invisible Rider
Clinic 5 - Hill Climbing Technique
Clinic 6 - Bumping
Clinic 7 - Intro to Cornering
Clinic 8 - Blocking

While you are waiting for the clinics to start, be sure to check out
all the great documentation Jeff has compiled over the years on the
NCVC web site:

http://www.ncvc.net/training/default.aspx

As far as training goes right now, it's the perfect time of year to be
riding for the pure fun of it. This weekend looks to be rain-free for
once, so be sure to get out and roll some miles while enjoying the
great fall weather.

Hello Athletes,

Apologies if you recieved this multiple times - had problems with my laptop.

I am now ready to advertise the 2009 winter sessions. YA-HOO!!!! Our target date to open is Nov 6th - 2 weeks from this Friday. I may be open Nov 1st. If we are able to open sooner - I will send an email out to all registered participants if you want to come in that week to start CT classes. The format is very similar to my previous 6 years of classes except that I am finally in my OWN shop!! Pierre and I are very excited about this happening. Any word of mouth you all want to spread - thank YOU!!! in advance!

I will email again in about one week to comfirm the opening date. Pierre and I want to have an open house on that Friday Nov 6th - to say thanks for supporting HPC for many years. We will be offering the VO2 testing (which you all want to do early into the training/ before you all start the classes if possible), Bike fitting, Bodywork, and the Computrainer classes. Once we get up and rolling, I want to offer some "Challenges" and I will be holding a 5 mile Advanced Time Trial Compeition. In addition to the bike training, we want to offer strength and conditioning classes, and yoga. We are making the space multi functional.  The www.bikereg.com link is @ http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=9535. I am opening the registration next Wednesday OCTOBER 28th @ NOON.

In the past - I have held separate Junior classes on Wednesday and Saturday. I would like to continue this again. As such, the Wednesday 5PM and Saturday 10AM I am designating as Junior classes. Of course the juniors are welcome at ALL and any sessions, as are parents. But I like to train the juniors together as a unit. It is more effective training. So if schedules allow, please have juniors sign up for these specific time slots. Thank you.

Babes on Bikes classes/ Ladies only I have set up for Monday and Friday @ 11AM. Please pass the word around (Anne Brown). Thank you. I am opening early bird classes for the people who prefer working out as a start to their day.

In the past we have had only 1 Multi rider system. In the new space I will have betwee 12-14 Computrainers and as such will many times break classes into 2. I want to meet everyone's ability level and on any given evening, I can run a intermediate and advanced class; we can have 2 completely separate systems going. So this should make things much better to accomodate all ability levels. Remember the indoor training is all about training oneself. I know it gets competitive in the classes, but you all really wanna focus on your own goals. I will try and make this happen for as many people as possible, and have different level classes available at most all sessions. Of course if you all want to hammer, we can all go advanced.

Please send me thoughts. We really built this for the athletes' and as such, ideas are always welcome. We want to make this a sensational training center for ALL.

I look forward to CRANKIN the Tunes!!!!

Cheers,

Susan Hefler

Juniors,

I went up to Skyline today -- it was beautiful. Sunday should be
colder after the rain this coming Saturday.

We would like to see some of you riders on the team's official Sunday
group ride -- the Espresso Ride. These off-season rides provide a chance for
all rider categories on the team to get to ride together.

This Sunday's ride will be earlier than normal -- leaving from G'town
at 8:15 -- because of the Marine Marathon that will have 30,000 runners
descending on the streets of Arlington and Washington. The regular departure
time is 9 a.m., and will resume the following week.

Hope to see you soon on a ride. Have fun!

Need: We need 10% of the active membership to have a quorum to
vote. If you don't come, and we don't get a quorum, all of the efforts
of everyone running and creating the amendment to restructure the
Executive Committee will be for nothing.

Structure:
The election will have have two parts.

In the first, we will vote on an executive committee proposal to amend
the NCVC constitution to change the named members of executive
committee. In the second we will vote on the 2010 members of the executive
committee, based on the outcome of the vote in the first part.

Background on the amendment
This proposal is the most sweeping reform in the
thirty-year history of the club. As currently structured, the Ex Com
comprises ten officers: President, Vice-President, Secretary,
Treasurer, Team Director, Junior Rider Rep, Women's Rider Rep,
VA/MD/DC Rider Reps.

The amendment would eliminate the five Rider Representatives and the
Team Director and replace them with six new positions:
Road Team Director, Cross/MTB Team Director, Women's Team Director,
Juniors' Team Director, Communications Representative, and Director of
Sponsor Relations.

Please read the amendment and its supporting information at the link
at the bottom of this note.

Any interest in doing a Father and Son ride at Skyline on Monday? Actually,
this would be "Fathers and Sons" -- from personal observation, sons will be
off the front and dads will be lagging.

Moms/friends welcome, too -- however, note the lagging paradox.

Hello All,

Today I cannot be at the ride - but, some of you were talking about getting together to ride. It is a nice day - so if you want to gather - go ahead and do it. Steven Kendall, Avery, David Brookes - you guys all know the routes. Just make sure you leave early enough so that Avery can get back home before dark - which comes very early now.

I say we move our rides to the weekends now - so we have plenty of light. This weekend - either Saturday or Sunday - the Wilson's are in for having a ride and watching the World Championship's party. I am going to wait and see which day is the best weather-wise. Then I will set up a plan. But I am thinking we can do a nice 3-4 hr ride out Sugarloaf way and then come back to watch the World Champ RR on Avery's Tivo and order in pizzas (Jim ever since you suggested this I have been thinking about it......).

If you guys want to get together tonite for a ride - do it. Just be careful as always and make sure you pay attention to the clock so you get back to Spokes NO later than 6PM. Avery said he can be at Spokes by 4:30PM - so this is when I suggest you start.

From now on - I will organize something for the weekends. I would like to drive out west to do some nice roads out in the country and see the leaves change.  Longer volume rides.

Cheers,

Susan

What an extraordinary Sunday at the races!  We had exceptional weather, an extraordinary venue -- Chris and Fred Kelley's wonderful farm, -- and great success conducting our NCVC Juniors cookout fundraiser.

Many, many thanks to Larry and the Mauch family for leading the fundraising effort, and to the families Kendall, Mount/Elsea, Brookes, Cullinane, Goldman, Engblom, Abbey and Wilson who schlepped and set-up, baked wondrous treats to sell, flipped hundreds of waffles, burgers and bratwurst, sold-sold-sold, diligently recycled and cleaned-up, and more!

We had fun and easily surpassed our fundraising goal (Larry will provide a final accounting).

I'm forgetting something?  The racers -- we had quite a few red-and-white juniors who rode hard over hill and dale and pulled in some podium smooches.  A wonderful thing.

Team,

Mark Sommers, President of Team Clean Currents/DC Velo, asked me to pass this message along to our team regarding Dave Zabriskie's appearance at Cycle Life in G'towne this Thursday.   You may have already read the message on the d20 list-serve.   If so, you already know about the event.  If not, here's Mark's message:

All,
Please consider coming to this Thursday evening's event with David Zabriskie at CycleLife in Georgetown.  Details can be found under "DZ in DC" at http://www.yieldtolife.org and registration for the event is hosted at http://www.sportsbaseonline.com/events/index.xhtml?categoryId=14457
Even if this event consisted simply of hearing Dave Z. talk about cycling, wearing the maillot jaune, and all things hysterical, it would be a great event.  However, the underlying cause of this event is for the "Yield to Life" charity, which is one that each and every person who hops on a bike should consider supporting.
As most know, I came about a micro-millimeter from losing my life on New Year's Eve 2007 when I was struck by an inattentive driver (he was not drunk).  The impact broke my neck (along with many other bones), leaving my left side paralyzed.  I pledged that if surgery could put me back together and I could regain my motor skills, I'd do something to raise awareness about cyclists on the road so that drivers are taught to instinctively look for cyclists before merging or turning onto a road or intersection.
Many, many cyclist are hit each year not because of willful or rude car behavior, but because drivers are simply not keyed to look for cyclist.  Drivers instinctively look for other cars and/or pedestrians.  For many motorists, cyclists fall into the secondary look category (what I call the noise category, e.g., animals, obstacles, potholes, etc.).  If the driver who stuck me had instinctively looked for a cyclist before pulling out, I would be four bolts, one metal plate, and some cadaver bone lighter, and have full feeling in my left arm.  Many other cyclists are not as fortunate.
I know that there are many, many worthy charities competing for fewer and fewer funds.  However, this charity holds the promise of preventing car/cyclist encounters through education, awareness, and mutual respect.  Its mission is preventative, not remedial.
Please consider attending this event, as will be a fantastic evening with one of America's most entertaining and celebrated cyclists.  Promise.  Your $25 will be well spent and a tax write-off too.

Thanks for reading, Mark

Zack was pretty fried and looking forward to the off-season, but for the next three weeks, he hoofed it 2.5 hours down to Colorado Springs to the 7-11 velodrome where he was winning about 50 percent of his races. With budget for six riders, off they went last Tuesday to collegiate track nats at the Lehigh County Velodrome in Trexlertown, PA.

Track is not a strength of CSU, primarily for lack of facilities and financial support. Still, if a college team wants to vie for the overall annual points national collegiate championship, they must field men's and women's teams for track, mountain, cyclocross and road. A number of colleges and universities sport huge teams with convoys of vans and buses pulling custom-painted equipment trailers. The powerhouses this year included Marian University - Indianapolis (the Major Taylor velodrome is walking distance from the campus), Lees McRae - NC, Ft. Lewis College - Durango (with our own Russell Brown); Lindsey Wilson College - Columbus, KY, Penn State Lehigh, MIT, DePauw and Midwestern State University. CU Boulder and SoCal schools were conspicuously absent. A few Hoyas and Temple Owls, Westpoint-USMA, IIT and Bard, and a loan Pitt rider with homemade jersey also competed - over 300 riders in all for three full days of racing.

Zack wore NCVC socks throughout.

With only one female, the Rams weren't looking to make a big show or vie for the omnium, but when the results were in:

Silver - Zack Allison Men's Points Race
Bronze - CSU Team Coed Pursuit
Bronze - CSU Men's Team Pursuit
Bronze - CSU Men's Team Sprint
Bronze - Garrison Schulte CSU 2Km Pursuit
Fourth - CSU Team Omnium
Seventh - Zack Allison Men's Omnium
11th - Zack Allison Men's Match Sprint

In the points race, Zack held the gold medal place for 32 of 90 laps, succumbing only on the 84th and 90th points laps to a Marian rider. In the match sprints, Zack took 4th in the qualifying heat and then beat his first opponent, only to draw the 2008 national champion from Penn State, David Espinoza, for his second heat and fifth race of the day. Espinoza won with some effort and Zack went on to win the following repecharge heat before tanking on his seventh race on the day. Espinoza won gold for the second year in a row. The CSU Men's Team Pursuit were also on gold medal time on the 7th of 9 laps when the lead rider, Chris Hall, lost his handlebars and couldn't pull out timely without crashing and jeopardizing his team members, so they settled for bronze.

Very exciting stuff. Please, no comments on the physical appearance of the CSU dad race starter - yes, I'm f-a-t.

Regards,

Russ

Jim,

We'll definitely be able to bring table/chairs and tent plus food
purchases. Grill is a no go. I can bring a small camp stove.

We'll deal with other odds and ends as they come up.

I was originally think of pancakes, eggs and bacon, but now considering
bringing a couple waffle irons and squeeze bottle jelly / powdered sugar
(similar to Ed Sander). Anybody have a waffle iron they can bring. We've
got a Belgian iron, but at least two would be good. However, will need
electrical power. I don't have a generator. We can start these very
quickly while other things are being initiated. Thoughts/comments?

Friends,

Many thanks. We have had good response to our request for helpers at next
Sunday’s Kelley Acres Cyclocross cookout/fundraiser. See original note
below. We could use a bit more help, I think.

Here’s the current layout and plan:

Schedule

Jim will do pre set-up on Saturday at Kelley’s.
We’ll serve food about 10:30 AM – 2:00 PM Sunday.

Food purchase and quantities:

Larry Mauch will buy the bulk of the food at Cotsco or such. Tom
Kendall will buy the Bubba Burgers.
Food quantities will be decided by Larry on Thursday or Friday, based
on the weather report. Chris Kelley reports to expect about 50% more
people than last year — so we should increase the quantity from last
year about 50% (when the weather was perfect) if the weather looks to
be good. Tom can provide Larry expertise on food sales/quantities —
e.g., Bubba Burgers were a hit, chicken burgers were not, veggie
       burgers did fine ...
Quantities from last year are indicated by the attached spreadsheet.

Other food and stuff

Carolyn Abbey is baking and bagging cookies.
The Mounts are baking and bagging cookies.
Carolyn Wilson is bringing dry ice to keep the Bubbas cold/frozen.
Jim and Larry are bringing folding tables (2-3 tables total).
Jim and Larry will bring grills (2 grills total).
Jim will buy drinks and bring leftover drinks, chips and stuff from
       last year.
Jim will bring NCVC Juniors banners.
Jim will borrow or rent a trailer to haul stuff (grills, tables, what
not) out to Kelley on Saturday and do preliminary set-up. If you
have a nice size grill or need stuff hauled, let Jim know.
Larry will bring tent (not sure if it’s needed; KAC has barn
       enclosure).
Carolyn W. will make price list/posters for food.
Jim will bring about 4 coolers of ice and drinks.

Volunteers

Cooks/servers/cashiers: The Mauch, Mount/Elsea, and Wilson (master
       chef Avery, et al.) families.
We need some more volunteers — we’ll grab some juniors, I hope.

We’d welcome additional contributions — e.g., some special food treats to
sell and serve.

I’m am forwarding another note from Chris on property access and set-up.

This will be great fun! Email or call with questions or ideas. Let me and
Larry know if you’d like to help.

Thank you,

Jim

       Folks,

NCVC Juniors will be putting on the feed — flipping burgers and
selling drinks and food — to raise money in about three weeks
(Sunday, October 4) at Kelley Acres Cross (KACX).  Staged by
long-time NCVC member and 2005 Wheelie Cup champion Chris Kelley (and
husband Fred) at their beautiful Maryland farm, this is an
exceptional event.  We’ll treat it not only as a fundraiser, but  a
change of season (road-to-cross) Juniors party ... So volunteer and
       come have some fun.

KACX directions and registration are available at:
       http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=9273 -- PDF
       brochure attached.

Last year, Tom Kendall and family did an incredible job pulling this
together. Unless displaced, I’m coordinating this year. In 2008, we
made over $800. This year KACX will be even bigger, so we’ll amp the
quantities and effort a bit. I’ve attached last year’s spreadsheet
so you can see what we bought and sold then.

A few folks have already signed-up.  We need set-up helpers, cooks,
       server/cashiers and bakers.

The set-up folks will help bring grills and tables to Kelley’s
             on Saturday or early Sunday;
             The cooks will flip burgers or stir what not in the pot;
             The servers/cashiers will dish-out plates and manage the till;
             and
Bakers will bake cookies/goodies ahead of time, and wrap them
             3-in-a-zip lock bag or such.

Other food treats are welcome (e.g., last year I think haute chef
Black brought an awesome barbecue). There were more than a few
barley pops served in the barn.

We also need coolers of ice, a couple folding tables, another propane
grill or two, and somebody with a Cotsco/Sam’s Club membership to
help us buy Bubba burgers (which were an awesome hit), veggie burgers
and provisions (see attached spreadsheet for detail).

Food service duty hours will be about 10 AM to 2 PM.

All’s fun.  We need your help. This directly funds the coaching
services that are core to our — your — immense racing success.
Please drop me a note to sign-on, or call/email with questions.
       Thank you,

       Jim Wilson

Hi Jim,
Just wanted to touch base about Sunday. The majority of parking will be filtered through our neighbors driveway at 8600 Myersville Road. We want to make sure your crew has convenient access to set up so please use our driveway at 8414 for unloading and parking. If you think you will be arriving after the 9a.m. race on Sunday let me know I'll make sure our parking executives are informed.
Looking forward to seeing the crew. Thanks, Chris 301.788.4631

NCVC Juniors will be putting on the feed — flipping burgers and selling drinks and food — to raise money in about three weeks (Sunday, October 4) at Kelley Acres Cross (KACX).  Staged by long-time NCVC member and 2005 Wheelie Cup champion Chris Kelley (and husband Fred) at their beautiful Maryland farm, this is an exceptional event.  We’ll treat it not only as a fundraiser, but  a change of season (road-to-cross) Juniors party ... So volunteer and come have some fun.

KACX directions and registration are available at: http://www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=9273 -- PDF brochure attached.

Last year, Tom Kendall and family did an incredible job pulling this together.  Unless displaced, I’m coordinating this year.  In 2008, we made over $800.  This year KACX will be even bigger, so we’ll amp the quantities and effort a bit.  I’ve attached last year’s spreadsheet so you can see what we bought and sold then.

A few folks have already signed-up.  We need set-up helpers, cooks, server/cashiers and bakers.

  • The set-up folks will help bring grills and tables to Kelley’s on Saturday or early Sunday;
  • The cooks will flip burgers or stir what not in the pot;
  • The servers/cashiers will dish-out plates and manage the till; and
  • Bakers will bake cookies/goodies ahead of time, and wrap them 3-in-a-zip lock bag or such.

Other food treats are welcome (e.g., last year I think haute chef Black brought an awesome barbecue).  There were more than a few barley pops served in the barn.

We also need coolers of ice, a couple folding tables, another propane grill or two, and somebody with a Cotsco/Sam’s Club membership to help us buy Bubba burgers (which were an awesome hit), veggie burgers and provisions (see attached spreadsheet for detail).

Food service duty hours will be about 10 AM to 2 PM.

All’s fun.  We need your help.  This directly funds the coaching services that are core to our — your — immense racing success.  Please drop me a note to sign-on, or call/email with questions.  Thank you,

Jim Wilson

HI Gang,

The weather looks okay for a ride tomorrow. Whomever wants to gather for a spin - be on time at Spokes as daylight comes very quickly now. ROAD ride - I think the trails will be too wet.

Hi Jim,
There's a flyer posted on our team's blog site: http://team-cyclelife.blogspot.com/
No idea why it's not posted on Sportsbaseonline.
Thanks,
Leslie

Leslie -- Is there a flyer, home page or schedule for the races?  What are the start times?

Thank you, Jim

Pre-registration closes tonight at www.sportsbaseonline.com for the
Juniors Day Out race this Saturday. There is no charge to use the
online service so why not register early?

Every junior will have a chance to win a VIDEO BIKE FIT from CYCLELIFE
along with other great prizes from CYCLELIFE and SILVER Cycles.

Juniors even get service hours credit for helping after their race.
